First Person Shooters and Camping

No matter what online first person shooter game you play, whether it be HALO, Modern Warfare 2, etc… You are always going to have to deal with campers.

By definition, a camper just sits at one spot in the game map and waits around for another player just so they can kill them.  This happens on ALL online first person shooter games, and can get very irritating.

Some might say it’s good strategy, which may be true… but it takes the fun out of playing.

The one good thing is that once you get killed by a camper once, it lots of times gives away their position so you can go kill them.  If they are a habitual camper though, unfortunately they will most likely just go back to the same spot, or else find another spot to set up camp.

Hilarity ensues in games like Modern Warfare 2, where the users can have on mics and talk to one another.

What are your thoughts on campers?

  1. it depends what game im playing, but often times there are situations where camping is the best and most tactically sound method for helping your team or winning.

people only hate it because of its effectiveness honestly, and most games have countermeasures if you are paying attention. for example, armor, airstrikes or m203’s :D

its is not camping, its called ambush and everyone does it. so stop the whinning

  3. Camping is hilarious. Campers sit and wait looking to slowly rack up kills. Other players have a better chance at killing more people by running around and covering more ground. They protract the game. They create hot spots of combat.

It mirrors actual combat metaphorically. They question the difference between honorable combat and dirty warfare. They show you that no one is safe. And much like suicide bombing, it is not weither it is right or wrong, but if it is effective. If it didn’t work, people wouldn’t camp.

    1. That’s bullshit man, campers can actually rack up lots of kills if the rusher is such a dumbass trying to kill the camper all the time, that actually happens, and in real life, there aren’t really any rushers, most are campers who wait for their target to attack or come to them then they kick their ass.Like in Saving Private Ryan when the guy was camping in the church and he heard footsteps near the door,he pre-fired the dude and a bunch of blood came from under the door,so camping is actually a very good strategy IMO.

      1. I’ve been in real combat and camping is considered hiding out. You move to complete the mission or objective. If the military sat around all the time then how would missions get done hmmmm….. ? Doing the mission or objective while moving as safe as you can over ground is the real deal and a truly effective way no matter real life or in game, but is not a game to have fun by being active and proactive?

I used to play Doom back in the day and people camped out then. I can only imagine how much more sophisticated camping out has become.

    1. We have easy chairs and port-a-cans now. I’ve even seen some high-levelled guys with satellite televisions.

When I use to play counterstrike I didn’t just camp, I packed a lunch. It’s called tactics and if you ever find yourself in a fair fight yours suck.

  6. I love those crafty campers! Thanks to their predictability, I’m able to rack up a ton of knife/melee kills.

You must have skills then! For guys like me that pick up video games occasionally, online play proves to be very frustrating with campers involved.

  7. I used to hate campers until I realized that running around non-stop with a SPAS-12 (Modern Warfare 2) gets me way more kills and stirs things up better than sitting and playing into the campers traps. The hunters literally become the hunted.

I have played Counter-Strike, Firearms (mod), Day of Defeat, and I currently play Metal Gear Online (which is a hybrid of 3rd person and 1st).

If I’m sniping I always camp.
I camp always if I am the defending team for an objective. I have found that camping two spots behind the front lines is the best. Picking people off before they slide between the defensive line is best. Always fighting people at difficult angles or areas that would make it hard for counter-sniping. Most camping for me is based around sniping.

Now that I play Metal Gear Online, I can deploy C4, claymores, or swimsuit magazines (yes), to prevent the enemy from sneaking up on me and killing me. Does it work? Usually it does, but as another poster posted the kill rate isn’t always the highest, but the death ratio is pretty low (if not non-existant) to begin with. As long as I wasn’t fighting the enemy head on I could always kill 7 people before I died. Of course other more experienced players could kill around 25+ people, dying 6 to 11 times. Not bad, but I’m not that good, and neither are most players. IMHO

I stopped online FPS back in the RTCW days, that stuff was getting annoying back then.

What’s the point of including a sniper rifle in online games if camping is forbidden? When I played Delta Force Land Warrior sooooo long ago, I played a sniper who camped! The cool thing about DFLW is that it was free range, the mountains were perfect for camping with a .50 cal Barrett, completely out of range of M4 or SAW fire. No one complained, they just became sniper hunters… So stop whining and learn to deal with real strategy. Oh and btw! Tip for Campers: camp for a couple kills and move to new spot, repeat.
