AKAR-15 Is A Painful Combination To Behold

Check out this rifle from the movie Echelon Conspiracy:

Oh where to begin….

Should we start with the fact that it is an AK / AR-15 hybrid (We’ll call it the AKAR-15) … which has an AK bolt carrier and charging handle, but yet has an AR-15 style forward assist inside an AR-15 style A2 upper (devoid of a charging handle).  Not to mention it has both the AR-15 and the AK mag releases, but seems to be packing an AR-15 magazine in the magwell.

Maybe its just the perspective, but it looks to me like the rear sight is much higher than the front one.   Also, nice touch on keeping most of the AK rear sight assembly in the mix, before integrating it into the AR-15 handguard.

Also, Look at how low down the magazine is!  In order to chamber a cartridge on this fake gun, it would have to travel up what looks to be about 2 inches.

Supposedly the movie was filmed in Europe, and it was easier to chop up two separate guns and combine them to make a non working gun, rather than get an actual AK or AR-15.  Do they not have realistic airsoft replicas in Europe they could have used?

I have no idea what the movie actually is called , but the white actor looks to be Matthew Fox (from the TV show Lost).  Anyone know who the other actor is? or what movie this is from?

UPDATE 1: Adam noted that the Glock actually has a 22LR conversion upper on it.

UPDATE 2: Priest pointed out that the one actor is Ving Rhames (which makes the other Edward Burns), and Rob notified me that the movie is Echelon Conspiracy.

Thanks for helping out guys!

You’re right, it does look like him. I can’t find any movies on imdb which they have been in together though. Maybe i’m just not looking hard enough.

  2. looks like the glock has a 22 cal upper on it.

Great observation, I see the 22LR extractor now! I didn’t catch that until you pointed it out.

  3. The Echelon Conspiracy

If it wasn’t a movie, I’d call it a photoshop job. How do they come up with this stuff?

ah nice, so its Edward Burns not Matthes Fox. Those guys sure look alike from that angle. Thanks for letting me know Rob, i’ll update the post.

  4. I’ve seen Echelon Theory and wasn’t drunk enough for it to make sense. Also, my friend and I were rolling around laughing when it came to the epic shootout at the end. No one told the actors how to use a gun, and IIRC, you can see one of them faking recoil. Also, the botched AR was noticed early in the fight. The action was distractingly bad. Oh, and the whole point was that Republicans are evil and want to eat your souls.

Meh after hearing that from you, and reading some of the online reviews I think i’ll skip watching it then. Thanks!

  5. I’d never heard of this movie, but I just looked it up. It’s hard to imagine a movie that has some pretty recognizable names in it (Martin Sheen, Jonathan Pryce, Ving Rhames) couldn’t manage something better than that monstrosity!

Although, from what I’ve seen, it doesn’t look like it made much money. Maybe it was a good thing they didn’t waste money on trying to be too realistic, since it seems not too many people cared to watch.

From what I read about the movie, it looks like the same old idea rehashed. You’d think it would have been expensive to have all those actors in it. Sometimes I wonder how they break even on films like that.

  6. And why would he hold a rifle that way? His thumb on the forward assist and finger on the trigger, his eye is not looking through the sights and his cheek is not on the stock. Also I seriously doubt that Ving would carry a .22 glock into a situation. silly.

      Yea, pretty ridiculous.

  7. its a shame all the weapons handling training Burns got for Saving Private Ryan was wasted….

  11. I’m not sure if it is a reflection, but it looks like the rear sight on the Grock is on backwards. It looks like the standard white U of the rear sight is facing forward. But maybe my eyesight is going…

haha yea it almost looks like the white paint is facing forward rather than towards the shooter. I’d need a high resolution photo to say for sure though. Good catch!

Actually looks like an A1 upper; there’s no elevation drum.

Perhaps the rifle is a chopped up mka 1919?
