Sending SWAT Teams To Inspect Oil Rigs? Possible Terrorism?

According to the news so far, on April 20th the BP oil rig in the Gulf exploded.  Now since those rigs are inherently dangerous, I wasn’t really surprised by this and took it as an accident.

Then this from from Obama today:

  • Potentially getting the Department Of Defense to address the incident
  • Department of the interior is sending SWAT teams to the gulf to “inspect” all platforms and rigs

What the hell actually happened there, that the department of defense and SWAT teams would need to get involved? Smells fishy… I don’t like to don my tinfoil hat too often.. but I’m going to go out on a limb and question whether it was terrorism.  It definitely meets the criteria and M.O. of terrorists.

Wouldn’t be the first time we have been left in the dark when it comes to details.

I can already hear someone blaming Greenpeace? or how about Japanese Whalers, oh sorry Japanese Whale “Researchers”

And wasn’t the rig that exploded owned by BP? What are they doing to figure out what went wrong and what not?

Then again we are known from covering our basics and figuring out who or what did this.

From what I can gather, BP has to pay for the damages and the investigation. I guess since it effects so many people the government is taking the reins though.

  2. That does sound incredibly suspicious. I have kind of been wondering what actually happened since no details have been given, just that its “under investigation,” whatever that means. That definitely sounds like it could be a terrorist attack, and since it happened in such a remote area with very few witnesses, the possibility of letting it fly under that radar was there. You would think that instead of sending SWAT teams in there they would send the Navy engineering corps or something to help out.

I just hope that bp gets that well capped off soon, before more irreversible damage happens to the gulf.

Yea I hope they get it capped off and the spill cleaned up soon. Pretty sad to see a once beautiful ocean and coast lined with oil and blackened dead animals.

  3. Pure speculation here, but what if we inspect these oil rigs, and find out it was a caused intentionally by someone, and that someone just happens to be Iran…

Just saying, since we already had our tinfoil hats on. :D

I like your guess Jordan. Definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

  4. well, I see I am not the only somebody who thought this was odd…

  5. I’m guessing the SWAT teams are there to make the administration seem like it’s got a handle on this, though I can’t imagine that SWAT teams have much to do on an oil rig.

The DOD involvement seems sensible since there are so many Navy assets in the Gulf. I believe they have some cleanup equipment, and I read that they were taking 55,000 ft of inflatable boom to try to contain some of the slick.

It’s definitely a crappy situation, especially for the people in the Gulf.

  6. I was curious about the blowout preventer not working so I looked for info on the drilling process and this is what I found:

    http://cliffbourgeois.newsvine.com/_news/2010/04/26/4207104-deepwater-horizon-running-casing-offshore

    Regarding the fire:

“Closing the BOP should seal off the well. For some reason the BOP wasn’t closed, or it failed to hold the pressure allowing the gas and oil into the drilling riser.
Apparently the diverter at the top of the drilling riser was unable to divert the flow out away from the rig as it is designed to do.”

As these links show, the process is very complex with many opportunities for very serious consequences – and drilling mud is a large part of the system that allows these operations to be done with what is essentially an open hole into a high pressure oil and gas reservoir.

It seems the situation is very bad with 210,000 gallons leaking each day, hurricane season approaching, and with the process of drilling an intersecting well to shut off the flow being a 3 month process. I read somewhere the cost to BP is around $6M per day.

Wow, good info.. thanks Robert. The situation definitely is terrible, hopefully they get the leak capped off soon.

  8. Personally, I am inclined to go with some slightly more… nefarious… conspiracy theories: http://middleoftheright.blogspot.com/2010/04/if-one-were-just-tiniest-bit-untrusting.html

I mean, since we all have our tinfoil hats on and all, we might as well go for broke. Does seem awfully convenient.

That said, speaking towards the less-scary theories out there, having steamed past those Gulf oil rigs, I can personally profess as to how easy it would be to toodle your way up to one, strap on a few explosives, and watch the entire thing go sky-high. They are lit up like Christmas trees, have hardly anyone topside looking around, and are conveniently clustered. Boat traffic is fairly common between the boats shuttling crews, fishermen, and whatever else, so you could just slide right in.

That is an amazing amount of driving going up in an impressive amount of smoke, and killing an unfortunate number of critters… hopefully it will be tended to shortly.

Interesting theory on that site, doesn’t sound entirely impossible either.

Pretty crazy how billions of dollars in equiptment and oil is left unguarded just sitting out in the ocean with workers on it like you said. I wonder if this “explosion” will result in rig police guarding all offshore drilling operations.

      1. It’d be interesting to see PMCs get hired or something.

Gives a whole new meaning to Blackwater. :p

I call BS on the SWAT aswell. I thought SWAT was for civillian CRIMINAL issues.

It seems that the incident happened not too long after the president made the announcement to encourage more offshore drilling: a good move to lessen the dependency of foreign oil and potential creation of wealth for the economy. This certainly become a motivation and target of attack for the enemies. Up until now, all we know about the cause of the incident was an explosion. I hope that all the other oil rigs are safely guarded from now on. Any faulty engineering and operating procedures should be identified and fixed. The decision to pursue less dependency of foreign oil and creating wealth for the nation should not be thwarted by this incident.

Regarding “swat teams” he may have been referring to these folks:

This would make much more sense.
