TAMPA, FL – A Tampa Police officer was caught on tape walking his horse through a crowded Ybor City bar, and the police chief said she approves of it.

The 37 second video was posted on YouTube and shows a mounted police officer walking his horse through Habibi’s Hookah Bar on 7th Avenue. A woman is heard screaming in surprise as the horse rounds a corner into her path.

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said, “It’s good public relations.” However, one business owner complained about the practice.

WTF? Good public relations? Haters gonna hate I suppose.

I know police horses are really well trained an all, but this just seems like an unnecessary risk taken simply to showboat the officer’s authority.

As a 30 year police officer and horse breeder…like Willie & Toby said
“Whiskey for my men, beer for my horses!”

      That’s a catchy song.

  3. This seems like a bad idea. To begin with, it’s pretty inconsiderate to both business owners and patrons who don’t want some big, stupid animal waltzing through their establishment (I’m talking about the horse right now, not the police officer) or interrupting their patronage of said business. It sure seems like it could be a recipe for disaster also. I don’t know anything about horse training or how often horses spook and hurt people. I assume that police horses are especially well-trained and behaved. Nevertheless, no matter how well-trained they are, there must certainly still be a possibility that something could startle or upset the horse, resulting in injury to anyone near it. I would think being in a confined space like the inside of a bar, where it isn’t free to move about, would make it even more likely to happen. (I’m just guessing here, but it seems reasonable to me.)

On a related side-note, this story is big news here in Iowa right now:

Horses spooked at a 4th of July parade – 1 dead and many others seriously injured in the stampede that resulted. I can’t imagine that it’s not in the realm of possibility for a police horse to go berserk and injure someone, no matter how well-behaved he seems to be.

Yea that Iowa incident was scary! It’s all fun and games until something like that happens.

What that horse needed was a good tazer shot right when it was entering the doorway. Yawsuh! That would have been righteous.

hahah yea that video would have been a lot more entertaining after that.

  5. I believe there is a bar in downtown Seattle that is well known as a watering hole for police horses, the refreshment is a small bucket of beer for the horse. I dont think they actually come into the establishment, the stand in a large doorway. Something a friend of mine told me she has seen several times there.
