80 Oakland Police Laid Off – Chief Makes A List Of 44 Incidents When Not To Call Police

Oakland, CA – The City Council voted June 25 to eliminate 80 police officer  positions to help close the city’s $32.5 million funding gap.

Police chief Anthony Batts listed exactly 44 situation that his officers will no longer respond to. He says if you live and Oakland and one of the listed crimes happens to you, you need to let police know on-line.

Full story – HERE and HERE

Here is a partial list:

  • burglary
  • theft
  • embezzlement
  • grand theft
  • grand theft:dog
  • identity theft
  • false information to peace officer
  • required to register as sex or arson offender
  • dump waste or offensive matter
  • discard appliance with lock
  • loud music
  • possess forged notes
  • pass fictitious check
  • obtain money by false voucher
  • fraudulent use of access cards
  • stolen license plate
  • embezzlement by an employee (over $ 400)
  • extortion
  • attempted extortion
  • false personification of other
  • injure telephone/ power line
  • interfere with power line
  • unauthorized cable tv connection
  • vandalism
  • administer/expose poison to another’s
  • Heh… report the crimes online hey?  Then what… some sort of independently contracted investigation unit that works for free will respond and crack the case? Looks like this “online” reporting method is just their not so subtle way of sweeping the listed crimes under the rug.

I’m not sure what they are NOT cutting out of the Oakland budget, but in a city that is always ranked high in mast categories of crime… cutting money to the police is just a bad idea.

Looks like it will be a free-for-all in Oakland.

I hope at least a few of the 80 that were laid off, were the bozos involved in the shooting of the deer back in May.

P.S. What is Grand theft dog?  Theft of a really expensive dog?

    1. Some purebred dogs can approach $1000 to purchase, and if you were a breeder, getting five or seven pups per litter, even if you only sold them for $250 each, your breeding dogs could be worth a small fortune.

Hate to pop your bubbles folks – but we JBTs never used to respond to the majority of these. (Not sure what the Calli definitions for some of these are.) Been carrying a shield for 29 years in October and hate to tell ya, but used to be folks with these problems used to come in to make the report not expect house calls. Adam 12 started that crap, okay with me if the same idiots lead us out of that business. Curriculum vitae available upon request…

My bubble is popped. I thought you guys eventually responded to most calls, just not always promptly for the non life threatening ones.

    5. So basically in Oakland I can get away with doing all those things then eh? Cut down my telephone pole, connect free tv, piss on my neighbors car, Extort him and steal his license plate, Take a shit in his yard while playing loud rap music. Steal his car and $1000 dog, lie to the cop about it, go buy A case of beer with fake check with a pocket full of phoney $100 bills and poison my wife. hmm guess that’s ok no?

Bob – when I was kid my stepdaddy punched the lights out on the guy in the next motel on Ole Route 66 because his dogs crapped on our driveways constantly. Dogs stopped coming over, no cops showed up, we weren’t their bestest friends but no body sued anybody. Years later they offered me the Constable job here in the little town I live in in central Vermont- told’em I wasn’t interested in being a glorified dog catcher – he runs around tellin’ folks to get dog licenses and checking open burn permits. Citizens have GOT to start taking care of themselves not waiting for someone else- especially the Government, to do it for them. I’m not advocating or even suggesting vigilantiism. I am suggesting folks watch their own property and get off their butt and go make the report out not wait for the officer to show up at your door so they don’t miss a few minutes of the Simpsons, American Idol or whatever. As far as your the list goes – each and everything you list happens every day across the nation whether you live in the next town over from me (600 people) or Manhattan. Two or ten or 100 more officers wouldn’t make a lick of difference – bad guys do bad things and cops pick up the pieces. The only way I’ve ever gotten ahead of an SOB is when somebody stepped up and said something. The Chief’s just saying he ‘s doing triage.

Grand theft is theft of any valuables worth over $400 (in California). Stealing animals such as livestock and dogs is a grand theft. stealing smaller animals such as cats is a petty theft.
