High Risk Civilian Contractor Training Class

You be the judge of what “High Risk” means in this case:

I know dynamic situations and 360 degree threats are often how it is in the real world, but this class looks like it has the potential to give someone a few extra holes in their body than what they came with.  That said, it does look like a lot more fun that standing in a straight line on some gravel infront of some stapled up paper.

I’m guessing accidents probably don’t happen often during classes like this, but personally I wouldn’t want to be involved in that advanced of a training scenario if I didn’t already have lots of prior training experience with the guys in my group.

The class is taught by James “I put photographers down range” Yeager if you’re interested.

Looks like they give you ultra realistic training in how to deal with friendly-fire injuries… By putting you in a situation where you are likely to recieve them… Combat is chaotic and f-cking crazy, but training like this by civilians, for just a few days doesn’t inoculate them to it IMHO….

  2. Now, a tactical class where you end up with *fewer* holes than when you arrived… that would be pretty epic!

  3. It sure looks like a cluster fuck over there. War and 360° threats are probably like this though. Maybe it’s just the way the whole thing is filmed, but it doesn’t looks very educational/structured to me.
But at least it looks fun !
And the colored tape around magazines is probably signaling blanks, isn’t it? So as long as they are keeping their distances from each other, the worst-case scenario is that they go deaf for some time…

  4. Check out the guy using his weapon as a crutch/support. He is pushing the muzzle into the ground to help himself up while carrying with his buddy a wounded person. 2:25 mark I believe. Also some of those tactics are really not great why stand up and get back down right behind your guy just crawl backwards for 6 ft, same amount of time to do both.

    1. You should try moving in an environment like that. When you are lugging an extra 100 lbs of gear you get tired and do dumb things like use your weapon to help you up. The training will show you things like that. As for only moving 6 ft, it looks like they are using a compressed area. In the Marine Corps we would have spread out a lot further and done some of the same tactics. With multiple wounded you can only bound back what feels like inches at a time. It takes forever and saps all your strength.

  5. Pathetic.

    1. Try it first… I have to say I’ve done stupid things in training and real life. That’s what training if for. So you do pathetic without getting someone killed.

  6. To be honest I didn’t notice the rifle used as a crutch in this particular movie, but I’ve seen it quite frequently among actual soldiers, whereas in combat zones. It seemed odd to me, as the guys are really aware that their weapon is the only thing that’ll save their lives, but it is commonly seen.
You can check this out it 2 war documentaries that I definitively recommend : Restrepo (US Army soldiers in Korengal valley in Afstan) and Armadillo (Danish soldiers in Afghanistan as well), all of them using M4 as their main weapon.

  7. @ :42 – Is that training, or a victim of the course???

I thought the same thing. Remember kids, looking tacticool and ignoring the most basic muzzle safety rules does not make you an operator.

Surely they are using blanks but even at that it doesn’t look like great training to me, fun maybe. If it’s live rounds it’s just plain stupid and dangerous. I’ve never seen pro trainers in sims like that not wearing body armor so maybe it’s just blanks and merely a chinese fire drill.

I’ve never seen leap frogging done quite like that must be something new.

The gun school junkies love shit like this.

    1. You obviously have no fucking clue what is going on so why bother tainting the comments? It is very obvious that those are real rounds. How else would you conduct training? Then again, how would you know.

  9. The training looks like it is a run phase training (obviously). The question is: have the students been through crawl and walk phase?

Comment on tactics: The flick and flee tactic for breaking contact is valid, but their dispersion was terrible. One well thrown grenade could have wiped them out, one well aimed automatic weapon could have suppressed and pinned them all. Not sure if that was a product of the limited training area (seemed like they had more room) or just poor tactics. Bunching up and performing valid tactical maneuvers in much to small a space is a common beginner’s mistake though.

    1. Is it weird that two distinct Dave’s posted something that must have been pretty simultaneous on ENDO mentioning a ton of similar stuff? I think we need to start drawing straws as to who is Original Dave and Neo Dave.

      1. I’m Dave!!!

  10. If they catered to protective details as a group and not individuals, it would probably be a decent thing for training. But considering that I’m not even sure if there were targets to shoot at, this is something you would do with blanks. Then they could pretend they were in the real army.

    A few things I noticed:

~0:20-0:30 they seemed really bunched up. But hey, if that’s what the modern day “operators” er…mall ninjas call getting on line, I guess I’m old school or something.

1:01 they are teaching the basics of evaluating a casualty. Nice. This is ROTC training after all (except cadets use blanks).

2:49 highlights a common theme of people taking cover on their backs…hmm…maybe just anticipating being a casualty because this is what this program seems to be?

3:10 tactical pop out of my mom’s Woody Wagon with AKs decked in multicam training?

    1. Getting in and out of vehicles in the real world sucks. There should be much more training for it. The two guys were actually pretty safe. Try shooting from a vehicle, and then having to move in groups to get out of the vehicle. It sucks and is something you can’t practice enough.

  11. That’s what I said, it’s definitively not an educational training, just a bunch of random civilians shooting blanks in front of fireworks.

  12. Unfortunately, I recognized I guy I know as one of the students in the film. He has taken previous courses with TR, so I ~might guess~ that this is intermediate/advanced, I don’t know. TR is a “tactical dude ranch” where civilians can play war, which is fine I guess. They don’t use blanks, at least not as I know. I have trained like this in the military, but there was much more that led up to it, not just 5 days. I feel that a major incident at TR is more of a “when” not “if”.

  13. It kinda looks like a bunch of kids playing war. Except they’re taller. And have actual guns. :-/

I’m at a loss for exactly what is supposedly being accomplished in this video or what audience this is being marketed to. I suppose a fool and his money are soon separated.

Horrible dispersion. And anyone one who knows anything knows the proper response for a close ambush is to attack, not retreat. Really? Bailing backwards through an open field towards a tree line with bad dispersion in between everyone? Thats not how you win gunfights.

  15. This kind of video, this training, I think is James Yeager trying to atone for the mistakes he made as a contractor, re-living the whole thing over and over again.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-fjrRB7WPQ&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PL8E4DD9CDE1FEA892

Yeager is the first one the returns fire, then falls back to a position far behind everyone else, where he couldn’t see the threat at all. Of course he’ll never admit to it, but other videos of his civilian contractor course show the same scenario that he went through, as the final ‘test’ of the class.

  16. Not to mention the guy with the AK keeping his light on during the night training. That seems a bit counterproductive considering the ‘targets’ seem to be quite far away. As far as I can tell he seems to just be making himself a bullet magnet.

  17. Speaking of making yourself a target, holding your rifle straight up as you move backwards is terrible, nothing like adding another 2-3 feet of height to your profile to say “I’m right here, shoot me!” And apparently they’ve never heard of proper spacing, one good sweep of a light machine gun would wipe them out. These guys should leave the tactics and fighting to those of us in the military.

  18. I just watched the other video of a camera man down range, I couldn’t even watch the entire video of Yager trying to explain away the safety issue. I guess I don’t want to take a class there. Having someone downrange to take pictures while people are shooting is just a risk that need not be taken. I wouldn’t be involved. If I went to class that started doing that I would go the other way. Can you imagine the mess you would be in if someone got shot and then some prosecutor wanted to punish someone. Just being there would be a night mare.

  19. I’ve never seen as many fuck ups as I have in the military so…stfu!

The “leave the tactics and fighting to us guys in military” is a joke.
