Kids Learn How To Spell “Gun” And “Rob” In School

Pretty funny that this slipped through the cracks:

Two parents in Queens were outraged after their five-year-old daughter was asked to complete a spelling worksheet that featured the words “gun” and “rob,” but officials at the Department of Education said Wednesday that the teacher, who brought the offending worksheet from a previous school, has apologized.

“You’re teaching them that guns are okay because you’re putting it in their homework, you’re teaching them that robbing is okay because you’re putting it in their homework,” said Takiema Reynolds, the girl’s mother.

I suppose it’s a bit more sensitive of an issue in a city like New York, in a neighborhood such as Queens.  Lets not get carried away though, guns ARE OK.  Robbing isn’t OK, but that’s a robber in the picture.  Police have guns to catch robbers.  Are police not OK?

Genuine mistake on behalf of the teacher?  Or an epic troll gone sour?  I guess we will never know.

  1. Ya huge overreaction by those retarded parents…yes we cannot teach kids words that are bad, so let not teach them words like…embezzlement….pain…molestation….cheat…..lets limit their vocabulary because you are afraid your children will become criminals…people need to grow up and quit being so damn sensative..

  2. on a black&white worksheet.. how can you tell if that’s red ? (that thing besides the gun)

  3. here’s the comment i left on the video on YT…
“reading or spelling the word does not denote whether or not it is a good thing. Since when does educating a child about something automatically promote it as good or bad? And besides guns are not and have not ever been the issue. Rampant idiocy is the problem. “

  4. …reading or spelling the word does not denote whether or not it is a good thing…

Of course not; I don’t think you understand what “denote” means.

    1. how do you figure? lol it means “indicate” which is exactly what i meant.

Well, first off, I had more than a bit to drink last night before I got home and started reading and replying to things on the computer, so I was in a rambling mood… but I think my reasoning at the time was that denotation is direct and literal. Spelling a word does nothing to signify anything. Nodding your head, for example, denotes agreement. Perhaps “connote” might be appropriate, as it means to imply.

        1. lol fair enough. either way i think we can all agree that idiots are the biggest issue with this story.

  5. After watching the video, it sounds like the parents shouldn’t be questioning how the school teaches their children English, since they apparently don’t know it very well… The father says, “…I looked at it and I seen…” The mother says, “…you’re teaching him that guns is ok…”

Hmm… Father’s last name is Gillman, mother’s last name is not. That’s circumstantial, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that these parents should consider themselves lucky that the taxpaying public is footing the bill for their child’s education because I don’t think home schooling would be a good alternative.

  6. I see Larry has already made the point I was going to make. Putting a word in the homework assignment doesn’t say it’s good. If that was the case, history would have to be dropped as a subject. “You’re teaching them holocaust is okay because you’re putting it in their homework” is right up there with this stupid crap.

And yes, I know I just godwined the comment field :p

  7. They cartoon is invalid, the robber is white

    1. Actually “Robber” was a wrong answer on part of the child, it was suppose to be “Politician.” It practically the same thing so I can see how the child could have been confused.

  8. The kids need to know what guns are so when they see their daddy using one to rob somebody they know what’s going on.

Well, in a taxpayer-funded school system the taxpayers have every right to decide what is appropriate school curriculum for their children.

Of course it may be a stretch making the assumption that all of those parents are paying taxes. ‘Cause if you’re getting it for free then STFU.

Also, the outraged parents all have the option of placing their children in a private school of their choice or they can home school them. I fail to see what the problem is here. ;)

  10. Better not teach them the word antagonist or they’ll become antagonists. Wait doesn’t every good story need an antagonist. Maybe reading them stories is also bad.

  11. And this is why I think you should have to pass an IQ test to have kids.

  12. Ok, so the assignment is to teach kids the letters and phonics of words. To start teaching words and phonics you start with simple words. And make it easy to establish a connection by adding an image. What would be the easiest words to teach kids, maybe single syllable three letter words? And words with easy to recognize images? The best part is I watched this with my wife who is less than enthusiastic about guns and she said “That’s dumb for them to get upset about, it’s a word, it’s not like they were teaching the word shit”. That blew me away.

And yet the school board in Oakland wanted to have Ebonics taught in school. These kids are exposed to theses words in the music and t.v. shows that they view. Give me a break!

  14. Yes,if someone tries to rob you, pull your gun.
