Russian Baseball

I was dubious… but then 2:06 min into the video came.. and it was actually pretty awesome:

They should speed up those balls a bit and put a binary explosive in them… like a higher stakes defensive clay shooting session.

Pretty nice foxhole from that binary explosive.  How would he have set it off?  I thought that stuff had to be detonated by a hard hit from something like a bullet.

What didn’t impress me was when he shot the Benelli m2 at that 5 gallon water jug.  *yawn* And then the claim that birdshot is good for self defense because it “penetrated through 1 foot of water pretty much”…. ummmmmmmmmmmm no.

Thoughts?

That gun makes an almost catoonish sound when fired.

and of course as I’m pushing the submit button I noticed I misspelled ‘cartoonish’. God dammit.

      1. Good thing you caught that — I think Josh might have had a field day with you!

“Birdshot” is a varied term. #2 duck loads for self defense? Sure why not. #7 field loads? Probably not. Shells also range from 2 3/4″ to 3.5″ so you’ve got a lot of variation there, too. There’s also the lead, steel, tungsten/nickel/hybrid factor.

  3. Faaaaak Will people stop thinking Birdshot will effectively stop an attacker??

diqster, even with #2 Bird you’re dealing with a cloud of .12 Caliber balls each one weighing only a few grains. even at 1200FPS that’s not going to penetrate far. Sure a good solid dose in the chest might kill the guy, but not any time soon. And what good is a dead goblin who bled out on the curb waiting for the ambulance AFTER he finished inside your house.

Also with the Duck and Turkey and other game loads you’ll be dealing with the same punishing recoil.

Just reach for #4 buck or larger, if you’re worried about over penetration, get a .223 rifle and load frangible ammo. Or a pistol carbine and load JHPs.

The problem with .223 or unloading 30 rounds of 9mm from a Glock extended is cleaning up after. You got holes in the roof, ceiling, walls, and if there is a closet for the M855 to go through, all the cloths destroyed. Possible damage to water heater, or AC. Thank about what is in the walls of your hallway. But with Steel BB, a coat of paint cleans it up, and believe me that would still be a bad day for them.

I love all of the ballistic experts….Um…I’m going to NOT volunteer for taking a round of bird shot to the chest. Mostly because I enjoy life.

    1. Let us know when the first military/LE unit adopts birdshot as their standard load…

“Unless you expect to be attacked by little birds, do not use birdshot. Use 00 Buck. It will do the job.”

any round from the shotty will end the problem. some more effectively than others but even the lightest bird load anywhere from ten to twenty feet will be enough. the range with birdshot and a shotgun is about 60 yards. at 70 or 80 yards it feels like sleet. i guess everyone one @ this blog shoots at the range? and has no other experience with gun use? i guess you have yet to bird hunt and with multi. people letting the rounds fly at anything that pops up. it pretty cool when its raining shot consistly all morning.

  7. and this is why the military standard issue 12ga rounds are birdshot, right?

oh wait, they use 00 buck

THE MILITARY ALSO DROP 40,000 POUND BOMBS.

      This.

Let’s not forget LE use too.

Birdshot as a defense load is akin to the .22 argument. Sure it’s better than nothing and has killed people, but there are things that can, “kill better.”

Mike posted the video of that kid from Detroit that took 3 rounds of bird shot and barely lived. He lived but was incapacitated after taking a bird shot load to the chest. The first load almost took his arm off under the elbow. The third just kinda grazed his head.

Not my first choice for defensive ammo, but it will do some damage at close range.

  9. .410 birdshot out of a Judge FTW!

Yeah, and if you drop a penny in a swimming pool it will “penetrate” all the way to the bottom.

ask dick cheney how birdshot works on humans when they are shot in the face.

    1. That’s the reason I only use slugs for home defense.
