How Hornady Makes Ammunition

An interesting video on the process:

Hornady makes some good ammunition.  Since I shoot for fun, I don’t normally buy expensive ammo, but when I’ve got my hands on some it was evident why it costs more.

The video wasn’t as nice and touching as The People Who Make Black Hills Ammunition but it is quite a bit more informative on the actual process.

  1. Woot woot Hornady.

They make both my chosen HD and SD loads.
TAP 9mm 124 gr JHP for the M&P9 and Critical Defense .380 90gr XTP for the LCP.

    Quality-as-heck.

  2. They should’ve used the guys from How Its Made to produce this video. That would’ve been a lot more fun.

Too bad they totally glossed over the cool mass production methods used at the end for packaging, like how the cartridges are put into bags and measured, or put into containers to be boxed.

    Still, great video and informative

  3. I dont think the How its Made people would go to an ammo plant. I believe they are from quebec.. No further explanation needed. Good video though.

  4. Notice how when they test, at least in this video, they do not test from the production run. He hand loads the ammunition tested. Even then, it appears a little sloppy. This explains why factory ammunition is so all over the target.

Yea I thought that part was definitely odd.

    2. Notice how when they test, at least in this video, they do not test from the production run.

Notice that they said they were testing “new loads,” and used the wording, “new test loads are carefully doctored.” Translation – they are showing them testing new experimental combinations of powder, bullet, primer, etc., not testing production rounds for consistency or conformity.

  5. This is a much more interesting video of how a bullet is made. Maybe it’s just that the soundtrack is so much better. ;)

the Hornady SST bullet is the best thing i ever found to use on deer. even a little 6.5mm bullet over a stiff charge of 4350 will hit a deer like a rifle grenade. good stuff.
