AK-47 V.S. AR-15

The gun store guys tackle a classic gun forum question:

What’s next, 9mm v.s. .45?  That ought to make some blood boil.

22 minutes is a bit too long for a YouTube video if you ask me… I skimmed through this one because I don’t have that kind of time.  I figured some of you might want to kill some time at work on Friday though. :P

I’d like to buy an AK someday, just to have one.

Thoughts?

I thought I would share this. It’s from a gun shop in Mesquite, TX. I KNOW the gun store guys will like it!

    And Furthermore…

A clip is not a magazine, a mag is not a clip,
And neither is a grip a stock, and “stock” does not mean grip.
I do not mean to nitpick, but improvement could be seen,
If we could [ever] bring ourselves to say exactly what we mean.

That’s Jeff Cooper’s doggerel. The word “ever” should not be there, nor the introductory “And.” Here is the Moritz gilding of the Cooper lily:
A clip is not a magazine, a mag is not a clip.
Neither is a grip a stock, and “stock” does not mean grip.
A bullet’s not a cartridge, nor is the converse true.
Folks should be more careful when they use the words they do.
A revolver has a cylinder, but only one, you see,
And cylinders have chambers, five or six, most commonly.
    Neither is a cylinder a barrel, as some say;
The barrel is the tube that guides the bullet on its way.
I do not mean to nitpick, but improvement would be seen,
If we could bring ourselves to say exactly what we mean.

    1. Actually, a grip CAN be a stock, and stock CAN mean grip. The grip panels on 19th century pistols were known as ‘stocks’. Still are in some quarters.

Oh, and another thing….I’d REALLY like to run my hands through the gun shop guy’s beard!! ;)

    1. It is quite glorious, isn’t it?

  4. Sorry, couldn’t watch any further than “The AR has to be kept very clean or you’ll start having all sorts of problems” (Or whatever he actually said).

Agreed. If you run that bitch wet, she’ll keep shooting.

      1. More than that having the right buffer and spring set up. I can’t find the article but a guy did a write up that showed even a bone dry AR will shoot over 2000 rounds before you start having problems. Lube appropriately and you won’t have an issue.

Now, before I watch this I’m going to post a little rant.

How is it possible to compare guns that are so far apart chronologically?

AK (Which you keep calling AK-47 and technically there is no such thing in existance. Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1947 is called just “AK” in all documents) was used since ’49 to ’59, then it was replaced by AKM and other successors, AR-15 was used since ’58 and up to today.

  6. Not even gona push play.

He’s confused with the M855 (he also called it M885) and SS109

He implies that AK-74 comes with a 45 round magazine which is incorrect. Forty five round magazines come from RPK machine guns. AK-74s service rifles are supposed to have 30 round magazines by default.

    1. Why would it matter what size magazine “came with” the gun in the first place. It’s not like extra mags- in any size- aren’t available, or like mag changes are impossible (sorry, California!).
I was at a gun store one day and a customer asked me if I thought he should get some 100-round drums for his AR. I asked him how many times he planned on missing his target…

It’s totally fine with me, no offence taken. English is not my native language and I might simply misunderstand what people might be saying. It’s good to know there are users who can and will correct and point out my mistakes.

  9. Why do you you keep posting these hillbilly’s videos, giving them views and a reason to live?

  10. LMFAO, I think they should make a Animated Gif out of 13:24-13:28
“This is a prom queen, this is a biker bitch” *shuffle dance*

  11. Did he say “You guys have been real perceptive to this stuff…”?

Yep, I just rewound. He did.

  12. once again I don’t even click on their vids anymore…

  13. 9mm vs .45acp? Yes, Please! I love the caliber wars… My post today is actually on that very topic!

I was kinda hopping they’d say “Well, you’re all wrong, it’s the HK G3”

  15. Clowns. No clicky.

  16. FXhummel1 needs to make a song about these guys.

      seconded!!

    2. yea, making fun of them

  17. The 5.56mm won’t penetrate 4 inches of wood!!!!! Seems to go through 10.5 inches of pine just fine:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7aG86cqkJ0

    1. Sorry, that’s a .223. Much more penetration than a 5.56 obviously.

    2. Really, I don’t want penetration through and through. I want it to go in and bounce around, a lot.

  18. Yeah, yeah, we got it, AK firearms are designed to cycle even through the worst conditions. Kalashnikov factory has a sandstorm simulation room only AK can survive. Wahoo! Big deal. 60 years late buddies.
AR 15 still suffer from the poor rep they got at early stages when thy DID experience reliability issues.
And guess what? They are using 5,56mm which is not the same as the AK.
    Do you have another scoop?

i got rid of all my combloc iron many years ago. the ugly was just too much.

  20. I think it vastly depends on the shooter. An AR15 in the hands of a trained soldier will destroy any jihad moron with an AK47. Just depends on the scenario and shooter. What about an AR15 with a Piston system and chambered in the 7.62×39? I think thats the dream weapon.

    1. Likewise, an AK pattern rifle in the hands of a trained soldier will be more effective than an AR15 in an untrained fighter’s hands. Period.

Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. The weapon doesn’t mean anywhere near as much as the person using it.

I have and run both platforms and I have to stick up for the AK. It really is a no-nonsense weapon. The only ak jams I have seen have been magazine related (and in wasr’s). I will say in the full auto versions an m4 stays on target better than an akm, but if you get a decent muzzle break you can fix that problem.
5.45×39 is dang cheap an ak74 pays for itself after ~4,000 rounds.

    1. [The AK] really is a no-nonsense weapon.

No argument there, which is why it is a good choice for African child soldiers and dumbass Jihadists that seem to think that death will be a blessing. For a competent, trained shooter who can maintain a weapon properly, I think the M4 is the winner.

…if you get a decent muzzle break you can fix that problem.

A broken muzzle doesn’t sound like a fix for a problem; it sounds like a big problem in itself. ;) Likewise, you don’t want to break your car when the vehicle in front of you stops suddenly; you want to “brake” your car.

Sorry, drives me nuts when I see that kind of thing!

  22. FAL was here. you all can go home, i win.

  23. I’m glad I saw this, I’m thinking of getting an AK74 sometime soon.

  24. I have solved forever the 9mm vs 45 AUTO argument: shot placement.

    1. I guess you NEVER miss. I do.
The question then becomes how often and how far
Or alternatively stated capacity and cali.. bar?

Combined with the threat of multiple attacks,
the mythical stopping power, mall ninjary and bravado
You get an argument with no clear winner
Just something fun to discuss at dinner

For some reason I wrote this like a poet
but it is not… its just prophetic.

      1. It’s not missing when I do it on purpose. :)

I like those guys. Its funny, but the ar looks like a kids toy. The ak looks looks solid. I know, the ar will make more hits, faster. But the ak may still be shooting, when the ar is being cleaned or greased down. For paper shooters, the ar will be more fun. But the tiny holes dont look as cool as the 7.62 holes. Still wouldnt want to get hit by the 223 round. I guess a rear peep on an ak would be best if you could get it pie tin accurate at 100 to 150 yards. Anything past that and you need an m14. I have an arsenal sgl-23, and after range shooting, im dreaming of an AR. …….go figure.

At 19 I was qualified sharpshooter in the marine corps. The M-16 was more than adequate at the 300 yard line. Even at 500 we were hitting large targets. Since my eyes dont function as precice now, 26 years later , and I have no access to long ranges I think in terms of 200 yards or closer. If you can blast an enemy at 300 yards with a 223 round thats pretty good. But for a civilian thats just murder. Considering we will use our weapons for self defence, the Ak is more than adequate. But at the range, if you get satisfaction from hitting exactly what you aim at, the the American weapon is the one to reach for. Buy both, and you’ll never have to ask this question again. I still think those good ol’ boys on the video are great. Very informative, clear and concise. Made me guilty for neglecting my AK. Still, I will not rest until I have a colt, or bcm, 20 inch full lenght A-3.
