How To Mess Up In 3 Gun

From the 2012 MGM Ironman:

hahaha @ the zip line!  That looks intense.  Everything goes swimmingly until around 36 seconds…

Nothing warms my heart like seeing guns worth thousands messing up haha

Looks like both of today’s posts are about shooting competitions.  You get what you get…

You can read more on the MGM Ironman at their website.

  1. I’ve RO’d two all-shotgun stages two years in a row at the Superstition Mountain Mystery Three Gun. We’ve developed a side match when a Saiga shows up our stage called “Will It Puke”.

Last year, very few Saigas made it thru our stage without a hitch. The very before that, only Iain Harrison’s ran without a hiccup.

Of course, nothing beats the guy whose 1100 broke in two right at the barrel nut on his very first shot. That was…. impressive.

hahahaha!! awesome ENDO. -made my night

  3. This is what a lot of people on internet forums need to understand. Combat firearms are not the same as these “race guns” and should not be run the same way. Simple and reliable does not always mean the system is fast. Race guns are not used in combat for this very reason. Not saying there is anything wrong with either type of shooting, but I’m just tired of seeing gun forums full of people who can’t tell the difference mechanically between the two.

    1. Race guns should come with a free pair of Nikes, because if the race gun fails when you need it for self-defense you’re going to need to continue “race” in another away.

Seems like some of those malfunctions could have been taken care of with basic un-jamming procedures… IE SPORTS or “Tap. Rack. Bang”.

  5. Interesting that the shotguns (Saigas) and race handguns were prominent.

And I agree with Ed’s comment.

  6. And this is why my Saiga will never be anything more than “a toy”.

  7. Glocks and AK-pattern guns failing? Fanboys everywhere just had a stroke.

I didn’t see a single mossberg 500/590 or Remington 870 fail in that
    vid. ;)

As someone who has been to bad places with bad people and is now an avid 3gunner. I’d like to point out, you shoot thousands of rounds at Ironman, and these weren’t real “race” guns. These were newer shooters with lower quality equipment. My “race” guns are more reliable than anything uncle sugar ever gave me. Notice there isn’t a M2 or 2011 in that video, which are the guns 95% of us use at the top.

I haven’t had a failure on the clock since Midwest 3gun 2 months ago and that what magazine related. Since then I have shot several thousand rounds through my 3 “race” guns.

As for there being a difference between the two types of shooting, you’re correct. However, almost everyone you meet at a major 3 gun match is a vet/leo/etc. It also teaches you how to make difficult shots from awkward positions under stress. The tactics may not be the same, but shooting is shooting gentlemen. I’d invite anyone with an intrest in firearms to come out and try 3 gun before you start talking smack.

I take that back the lady at the end does have a 2011, my bad.

    2. 1. I do shoot three gun, but I shoot Tac Limited because a) I’m cheap ;) and b) I like shooting stuff that mimics what I might have to use to defend my life some day (God forbid). This is why I also shoot in Production and SSP.

      2. When Saigas are good, they’re very good. But when they’re bad, they’re horrid.

      1. Clutch Avatar

For sure, the saigas either win the match or come home as cursed objects of woe… Thats why I stay the hell out of open! That and I don’t want to shoot any gay buck rogers spaceman shit…lol

That’s why I use the slide catch instead of the chris costa way.

Thanks to Clutch for the only informed, non one upper post.

Matt Burkett has some awesome ironman videos.

Pump shotguns only go in HM division.People dont shoot them in TacOps because they are too slow.

  12. In our last local 3Gun match my friend shot his Saiga in which he had built a coupler for side-by-side mags. Almost every time he fired from his first primary mag, a round from the coupled secondary would fly out; empty hull ejecting to the right and an unfired shell sailing away to the left side. He didn’t figure it out during the stage and was astonished that he ran dry after three rounds after his mag change. This was amusing.

Having started 3gun a few months ago, I can tell you that the most unreliable piece of crap firearms out there were the pump shotguns.Ammo was getting stuck in the chamber., trigger groups were falling out,, slugs were going everywhere. No offense to the pump guys. but i would never put a pump on my nightstand now.The only reliable shotguns I saw were the semi autos. i saw the same crap in my shotgun class earlier this year.

Not to claim I disbelieve your comment, but I’m HM Tac and my 870 has never failed me. Admittedly, I have seen another fail once during a slug round, but I lent him my own and it went fine. With the amount I’ve thrown into my 870, I’ve never had any trouble at all with it, and it’s always my favorite to keep by my bed.

But maybe that’s just cause I’m a girl, so I win magic female points that keep my gun immune from malfunctions.

We have a guy at our club that, like you, runs his 870 in HM Tac and does very well with it. His never fails either. But we’ll have 5 or so new shooters every month who come out with their 870s and always have problems. The guy who wins told me that he owned his a long time ago and the new ones have issues.

  14. hahahahaha!!! Bang, tap, rack anybody?

What’s up with the big magwells on the Saigas? Do they serve the same purpose as an extended magwell on a race pistol?

  16. Martin Avatar

It sometimes amazes me how hard of a time some 3 gun shooters have clearing a malfunction.

    And yes Saiga’s are problematic.

Though no gun is infallible. They are all Machines and all machines have a MTBF.

There are some VERY good 3 gun shooters out there. I’d just like to see a more tactical style of shooting.

Whats with the C-more sight being mounted on its side on the females pistol?
