Red Dawn (2012) – Trailer

Relevant to my interests:

If you liked the original Red Dawn (1984), enjoying this one probably won’t be a stretch.  It appears to be the a similar story line but the enemy is North Korea rather than Russia.

Are you guys looking forward to this movie?  Maybe irritated that they even attempted to remake the original?

*eye roll* at them using Filter’s “Hey Man, Nice Shot” song in the trailer. That song is almost as played out as Drowning Pool’s “Let The Bodies Hit The Floor” for war type movie trailer scenes.

Release Date: November 21, 2012

  1. I made my girlfriend watch the original red dawn recently, and she bitched for hours about how bad it was. Hopefully this one is a little less on the chest thumping patriotism and more into the story and action.

Is there something wrong with chest-thumping patriotism?

      1. When it detracts from the action and plot, yes.

        1. I agree. Movies need more moral relativism and self-loathing.

    2. I pray to God that they don’t ruin Red Dawn for me.

  2. i totally expect china or n korea to invade somewhere totally unexpected anytime.

  3. This movie… I like it! ANOTHER!

    1. He is never going to live down being thor, just like whatshisname who played harry potter.

  4. Looks like homefront the movie, which was basically red dawn the game. This should be pretty good.

Homefront is exactly what it made me think of. North Korea, EMP…same storyline. Should be a good tie in of both though, really looking forward to this one.

As a Korean-American I wished that they would have picked another group of villains. Really? North Koreans? That’s the best you could have come up with? Why not a group of organized, well-trained anarchists that think that technology has become too developed or something else? Even with the pick of villain, did they have to have (mostly) white guys (and girls) as the heroes? What if there was a KA kid amongst them?

I’m not hating on this movie, I dig the action scenes in the trailer and I’ll probably watch it when it comes out on DVD, but I just wished that they didn’t pick a villain that is so cliché (and to some degree, borderline if not flat-out racist).

    1. The movie was originally filmed with China and the PLA as the invaders- they are all wearing modern PLA Type 07 digital camo. They later decided that pissing off China maybe wasn’t the most politically expedient thing to do, so they photoshopped the Chinese flags into North Korean flags and re-wrote some lines.

Didn’t know that until now, thanks. But even then, does it make the movie any less xenophobic? Granted, it’d still be considered racist/offensive if we used white guys for a revived USSR, or Arab-American actors to portray Middle Eastern terrorists, etc. etc.

For me it’s not even so much as “All Asians are Bad Guys” that I’m against but it’s the “American Heroes/Badasses are predominantly white” that I keep seeing over and over again in TV and Film that annoys the crap out of me. Because at least that way they could work in a scene that’s basically “Hey, guess what? Ethnic minorities are just like us! It’s those crazy commies with their crazy commie ideology that are f–ed up!” Just saying…

have you seen the original Red Dawn?…..it takes place in Hick-ville Colorado…..if anything it would be more awkward if they tried to force the politically correct token ‘minority’ hero.

          1. Blindshot Avatar

I live in western Michigan, which is as white/hicksville/suburbia as the town used in Colorado and just about any city that Hollywood uses for a sense of Americana. How would it be awkward for the movie to question race in a movie like this? I’m not saying, either, that they should have the main hero be Asian. I’m well aware that compared to Chris Hemsworth, there’s no Asian actor star-worthy enough to take his place.

        2. You are aware that Americans, in general, are predominately white, right?

        3. I’m a USAF vet that did about three years in ROK. It has given me and many of my fellow military members a different view. And I can say that about 98% come back non-racist.

They are using the DPRK as a generic bad guy that has some relativism in the current movie.

Other than China, Iraq, NK who is really left as a long term enemy of the U.S.?

Yes the Chinese were the original invader-villains of the movie. The reason for the change to the N. Koreans that I heard, but haven’t confirmed, was that some Chinese financial backing is behind the distribution company the eventually bought the film. So it was more because of direct financial interests than a general US-China political correctness.

The Chicoms have a better union than the Norks do!

    4. I think they should have went with a Chinese and Russian collaboration.

    5. Given that:

      1. A significant portion of the armed forces of the United States have served on or near the DMZ in the peninsula,
      2. A larger portion of the civilian population of the United States watches LG tvs and/or drives a Hyundai,

I don’t think we need to worry about sane people here applying the Juche-inspired lunacy of the North and apply it to Koreans as a whole.

    6. Picking a villain one of the problems with remaking the film in the modern era, which is why I don’t think it should have been done. There is no USSR anymore, there is no country that could possibly pull off any invasion of the United States, or even have the chutzpah to try. And that’s not blind patriotism either, the USA spends more on our military that most of the world combined. Even as far fetched as an invasion from N. Korea, (which is why I’m guessing they needed that “new weapon” macguffin) that’s probably the most realistic group you will find. Given how closed North Korea is from the rest of the world, and how insane and tyrannical their leaders seem, that’s the best bet.

What I’m curious about is how this film will handle the fact that those ‘kids’ are insurgents fighting against a foreign power. The original was made about the same time as the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which essentially made the Wolverines the Taliban and Patrick Swazye’s character Osama Bin Laden. Given that the US is currently in Afghanistan, (which I might add, is “just a place” to most Americans, to quote the trailer), it is an interesting thing.

    7. ITT, a butthurt Korean.

  6. I’m a little mixed on this one as I typically abhor any remake as many times they do worse than the first take. Action wise I would hope it would be better than the first, but then you have to wonder at what expense.

That said there was many storyline points left unexplored and leaps of faith in how the invasion happened in the original movie, which I re-watched today actually, that could potentially be addressed in this version. One of the most glaring was the illegal immigrant commandos, revolutionary war on our border, total collapse of all pre-warning systems and the failure to stop an instant thrust into the heart of the nation, and the lack of support given to the “resistance” by the US military in the form of airdrops, advisers, coordinated bombing attacks, or even a few weekend warriors (read guard/reservists who should have been in the area somewhere).

However based on the trailer I doubt that will happen.
I base this on the first and most obvious, glaring mistake they show in the movie which is that a country that can barely feed their own populace, keep their electricity on, or fight their way out of a wet paper bag, invades the USA? From across the pacific ocean, with no aircraft carrier support, no land bases in over 6000 miles, and with no support?

The second would be the logistical approach to supplying an invading army with the needed armor, weapons, ammo, and food to seize and hold large swaths of hostile territory, with no land or large ocean going fleet of transports, and massive air resources.

Last would be the crap I heard about not casting the Red Chinese as the bad guys, as they didn’t want to offend them, even though logistically they are the only nation that currently or in the foreseeable future actually carry something like this out.

    1. considering all the shipping that comes from asia everyday it wouldn’t be difficult to coordinate at all, and then just seize anything else you need once here.
Australia would be the obvious target though, it has an army the size of a scout troop and the populace has 3 shotguns per 1000 miles. plus its closer.
The 2nd tactic would be give Mexico Texas, now there are two separate fronts to deal with and the cartels are pretty well armed.
China is the worlds only superpower, be prepared.

Thor is now a Jarhead? Gimme a break. The original Red Dawn was bad ass, especially if you saw it as a kid while we were still engaged in a cold war with the Soviets.

This film looks like it’s going to be like the recent garbage ass film Battleship, but only on land. Lot’s of big explosions, special effects, but no relevance with B-list actors.

Hollywood and the “reboots” really need to stop. What’s next Tootsie? Short Circuit? I was going to say WarGames, but it looks like that is already on the path to remake. So disappointing.

    1. uh, robocop? i dint know that was being redone too.

      1. I am saddened about a Robocop remake idea.

And I refuse to see the new Total Recall. Sorry you can’t beat Aunuld getting his auss to mahz and removing Michael Ironside’s arms with the one-liner, “see ya at da pahty, Rictauh!”

Thought it was okay, never saw it, liked it, avoided it, hated it, never considered seeing it, and never heard of it… unless we’re talking about the children’s book/tv series lol.

  10. Just from that preview, I can already tell the original (1984) is still going to be better. and I’m only 21!

  11. I wish the main character was more along the lines of Army Special Forces, giving they specialize in guerrilla warfare, sort the central concept of the movie. A Marine, seriously; if the movie was about how the guy learns that round objects move easier then square ones, or that you really can color within the lines, a Marine would be more fitting. :)

  12. I saw the original — I think this is going to suck like most re-makes.

    1. Screw that, I’m looking forward to some Patrick Swayze screentime. I haven’t seen him in any movies lately, so it’s definitely time that he made a comeback!

      1. Ghost 2

      2. @ Poppy I hope you know that it’s impossible for a live Swayze to star in any movie, just like it’s impossible, if not unlikely, that you will own firearms.

It’s apparent that Hollywood has run out of ideas and that leaves me wondering what will happen next? Will they begin to remake completely obscure projects or remake the remakes?

        1. …can we feed the one to the other? Either one, doesn’t matter…

          1. LMAO!!

I think I’d rather deal with an army of zombies rather than Pee Wee Hermans. They’re about equally brain dead.

  17. The trailer looks promising, we will see…

  18. When have remakes ever been good? Never and this will be no exception.

  19. I thought the whole point of Red Dawn was that average American kids could defeat the best that the Russians had to offer. With Thor being a trained Marine, and the bad guys are the Norks (how many troops could they seriously commit? Not enough to lock down mainland USA.), I sense many lazy plot holes. But I will probably give AMC my money so I can see it on the big screen. Unless Red Letter Media reviews it first.

    1. i just discovered red letter, his star wars prequels reviews were awesome

    2. Yup, you’re right. It was about average citizens. This is why the new one is full of fail as was the MW2 ‘homage’ level called, ‘Wolverines!!!’ I don’t remember the heroes in Red Dawn being Rangers…

My friends and I got lucky, and saw the original “Red Dawn” as a sneak-preview… Even to us high-schoolers, it was a rather thought-provoking movie, with the idea of a militarily scaling-down America being invaded by what we though of as a still-powerful Russia and unknown Cuba.
After that though, it is just a macho-male movie that gave power to the womens’ roles too.

I’m not one to want to see re-makes of some of my favorite old classics, but I’d like to see this one in the theater. It looks like it’s well done.

As far as the racist-thread in here… If you can defend North Koreas’ track-record against humanity, then maybe we can wait for the Anarchists to rise-up as the new villain. Wait, they’ll need someone to stand-up as Boss; maybe Kim Jong-Il can fly out and run things..

  25. All i know is i saw a mustang with an m134 up top and im seeing this movie.

  26. Anyone remember Fright Night? It was crappy to start with. Do you think the remake will be better?
