Thoughts On The AK-47

MrColionNoir makes some comparisons to the AK:

It will be interesting to see where he takes the mentioned Urban Battle Rifle Project, purpose being anyone who lives in an urban environment should have a rifle setup to protect their home and family if SHTF.

  1. 7.62×39 is a big DD round? Compared to what, a 22?

He calls it a Urban Defense Rifle Project but the screen says Urban Battle Rifle Project, which is it? And does he know what a battle rifle is? And that his AK is not the latter?

    1. Compared to the 5.56. It supposed to be Urban Defense Rifle, the “Battle” was an Epic post production fail.

Ohh not this battle rifle bullshit again! That whole battle rifle term is made up nonsense, quit perpetuating it!

    3. +1 I hated the ergonomics of the AK, and saw the 7.62×39 and an acceptable intermediate.

In the end I sold my AK as a down-payment on my FAL.

      7.62×51, now THAT’s a round!

  2. Hahaha, Sarah Jessica Parker ugly! Good Ol’ Horse-Face; that one is going to stick.

  3. Called it. I see the future.

  4. Your best video yet. MY AK loves me as much as I love her.

  5. did he just badmouth the PS3 controller?

    1. The PS3 controller is for midgets, but I will never go xbox360.

        1) Crazy Talk (regarding controllers).
        2) That was a really great video.
        3) Good luck with the mods, I’ve been down that road, and it wasn’t great for me. However, I didn’t know about Texas Weapon Systems, and tried Midwest Industries gizmos with poor success.

      2. I saw this batch of tricked out AK photos recently. Maybe they can give some ideas.

      3. I might disagree with you on the controllers but I am a big fan of your videos.

Great video! I like where you’re going with the Urban defense rifle idea.

Huh, I am strangely insulted by that Sarah Jessica Parker comment, but I suppose that’s in the same way that I would be insulted if I had a horse that someone said looked like her.

Anyway all I ever needed on my AK was aperture sights, Tromix bolt on charging handle, (I can’t stress enough how much more comfortable this makes an ak to run). Houge pistol grip, sling and perhaps a tritium forward sight post. The only Tapco item I ever had on mine was a slot muzzle break which was wonderfully effective. But Yankee Hill Machine makes an excellent AK flashider if one is permitted by local ordinances to go that way. I would also recommend a bayonet, if only because after cleaning and having it professionally sharpened a cheap as chips AK bayonet becomes a very useful large knife.

Not saying they aren’t out there, but I have not seen aperture sights for an AK that were very useable except of static shooting (e.g. off a bench). All of the forward mounted apertures are too hard to pick up quickly for what I would want an AK for. If you are using sight attached to the top cover you may have something that will work. IMO better to get a mount like Ultimak or MI to mount a quality red dot that will co-witness with irons.

The aperture sight I used was made by Mojo, seemed to give the AK double aperture sights which were very pleasant to use and accurate.

To MrColionNoir – sounds like a fun project. I broke my self imposed embargo of your vids to watch this one and I liked it. I think I OD’d for a while there.

Because it is the internet and I am obligated to criticize … Stop slapping the trigger. It is almost painful to watch. Press, follow-through, let trigger reset, and repeat. Go slow and deliberately then pick up the pace. Could be a wonky trigger on your AK as they range from good to barely functional. Tapco G2 is a decent replacement (note this is the only item made by Tapco that I would use on any rifle).

Couldn’t agree more with this comment, Its quite amazing how things smooth out with a proper trigger reset. I was able to get more than sufficient accuracy out of my underfolder by doing this. Incidentaly is the magazine hold currently a verboten technique, or is that just for AR shooters?

    2. The trigger on that AK sucks horribly. I’ll admit my short comings but this time I assure it was the trigger.

The “Urban Battle-wait-no-Defense Rifle” concept sounds like something that’s Never Been Done Before, and could be a Game Changer. I’m somewhat more skeptical of the bolt upright, lip biting firing stance being demonstrated here, though.

And who is Sarahca Jessica Parker?

^^^ Yes to this. C’mon the “Sarahca Jessica Parker,” deserved a re-do on the audio voice over. Very insulting to butcher that hag’s name like that.

I too broke my self imposed “strike” against Mr.ColinNoir videos to see this.

STOP SLAPPING THAT TRIGGER. Your trigger control is irradic at best.

  10. I agree with the premise of the UDR, although I’ve often wondered about the practicality of an AK in this role in the US, specifically regarding the prevalence of the ammo. I think it’s safe to say in SHTF scenario
that you’ll have a much greater chance to come across ammunition from other less fortunate souls if you are shooting .223, .308, 12ga, 9mm, or 45 (maybe .40 too since it’s a duty round). I just think that any other calibers will require more planning and stockpiling of ammunition.

For those who love the AK in this role, what’s your thoughts on availability of 7.62×39 assuming you can’t just order russian surplus online when you need it.

    1. Picking up another rifle somewhere along the way if 7.62x39mm reserves run out.

Personally I think in a mild or full blow SHTF any ammunition you acquire will probably have matching firearms to shoot it. People will probably not be willing to part with much ammo, at any price. That’s one of the reasons why my total SHTF rifle is a 7MM Mauser.

I am kind of joking about that.

Never mind the fact that people in this country have been stockpiling industrial quantities of AK ammo since the end of the cold war. If we are looking at a total lights out scenario I would bet that a round of 7.62×39 or perhaps 50 BMG would be the last cartridge ever fired.

    That’s an AK 74 no?

      no.
      7.62 = 47
can be spotted by the curvier mag

  13. When I think of urban living, I think of apartments. Most rifles will penetrate several apartments. I’m all for people’s right to defend themselves with firearms, but I personally wouldn’t want to live in an apartment with lots of rifle fire going off.

    1. Name one person who would. :P

Pistol rounds will go through walls as well, personally I would go with soft point 7.62×39 ammo, water tank ballistic testing I did with the cheapest soft point ammo in this caliber was most impressive. If one doesn’t want to shoot through walls I suppose one could try birdshot, but I don’t think we want to go down that road.

    1. A 7.62x39mm Hollow Point will still go through a tree (10″ wide) at 100 yards. I like soft-points as well (especially the Privi Partisan round noses).

  15. Loved the video.

For an UDR with an AK base *in defense of a fixed location* (and flexible budget), I’d recommend an Ultimak Railed gas-tube or Texas Weapons System front handguard w Aimpoint Micro OR a Texas Weapons System railed dustcover w an ACOG, US PALM AKBG grip, flashlight and offset mount, and a threaded flashhider w suppressor.

Or maybe just get a Version 2.0 Sig 556R, your optic of choice, BUIS, and flash-hider & suppressor.

    Folding stock…if ya wanna.

Now, for an UDR for being on the move, I’d go with an SBR’d carbine (AK, AR, Sig 556 or 556r) or an SBR’d Uzi. Easier to hide (this benefit can’t be overstated) and maneuver.
