Bob Costas Quotes Jason Whitlock Regarding Jovan Belcher Murder Suicide

I always get a kick out of when people flip out over stuff like this:

In the coming days, Belcher’s actions will be analyzed through the lens of concussions and head injuries. Who knows? Maybe brain damage triggered his violent overreaction to a fight with his girlfriend. What I believe is, if he didn’t possess/own a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.

You can read Jason Whitlock’s article over at FoxSports.

This post was going to be alternately titled “One Nobody Quotes Another – People Flip Out” because I have no idea who either of the people are, nor do I even care slightly what their stance on gun control is.  That said, sports also isn’t on my radar so these two might be sports knowledge gods for all I know.   Really though, if that’s what Jason Whitlock “believes” then let him believe that.  If he is that stupid to think that a 6’2″ 228 lb. linebacker would have any trouble killing someone with even his bare hands if he wanted to, then I think he needs more of a lesson in physics and anatomy than anything else.

I suppose the main issue though is that rather than remaining neutral in the tragedy  NBC now gets painted with a brush of “shoving gun control down our throats”.

All I know is I really wanna know what Ja Rule has to say about this whole thing.  hahha

  1. Odd that big strong people with history of substance abuse and head injuries don’t really NEED guns

Hey but never let reality get in the way of your agenda!

Sounds like his girlfriend was more in need of a firearm for protection than he was.

They’re entitled to their opinion. I just don’t want to hear it during a game. I don’t watch NFL games for political commentary. Keep your politics in your pocket until the clock runs out and then go write an op-ed or go on a talk show. I’m so sick of politics. Just let me watch a goddamn game in peace!

  3. Costas is a moron. That statement is pure stupid.

Apparently Bob Costas is on board with the notion that the inability of a millionaire 225 pound professional athlete to control himself outweighs the right of every other US citizen to self protection and self preservation. I guess the next time one of these overpaid immature clowns drives drunk we should take everyone’s vehicle away?

  4. The guy should be fired, his job it to talk about the game, thats all.

  5. These “but for” comparisons are inane. Given that he was an NFL player, he was significantly stronger and faster than any other 228 lb guy you are likely to meet this year. But of course withouth the ‘great equalizer’ he would have been just a wet noodle.

  6. If you’ve been keeping up sports medicine, you know that traumatic brain injury/multiple concussions in the NFL are being looked at more closely. The additional info from Iraq and Afghanistan has also played into this. Football players have the same sort of injuries to the brain as someone who got blown up by an IED. Bottom line: football – as we know it – could change drastically within a decade.

The NFL is panicking about this, as are the networks who carry that game. Costas is deflecting attention away from possible neurological problems this guy may have had, to that familiar standby – ‘guns kill people’. If someone really wants to get to Costas, just ask good questions about what the NFL is doing to prevent players from getting ‘monster brain’.

yeah the gun actually allowed the women to die the least painful way. i would rather be shot in the head than beat to death with bare hands or stabbed etc. and he did it infront of his own mother. he had problems.

I think you should take him down, spam the fuck out of him, post his address, phone number, what kind of kiddie porn he watches- lesson needs learned

This kind of ignorance is intolerable and this cowardly, “journalist” ( not even a real one) should be forced out I his career.

  10. I am disgust with Costas’ anti constitutional rant that is not based in any fact. Domestic violence is a very serious issue that should not be used as a political tool to take away the rights of Americans. In fact firearm ownership has saved many a woman from injury and death that would be perpetrated on them by violent partners. Violence is in the heart of the man and not the tool he chooses to deliver it.

he is right about handgun making people tougher, esclate arguements, and not avoid conflict. but the statement that they would be alive is bullshit. and it you dont agree that handguns do just that then you have a skewed view on just how dangerous a gun can be in the wrong hands. before everyone jumps on me think about it and i did say WRONG HANDS.

    1. The same thing can be said about being physically imposing. I kinda doubt that a man that size didn’t already feel tough and think he didn’t need to avoid conflict. Handguns themselves automatically make people more likely to pick a fight. There are plenty of people who carry who understand the responsibility of doing so and become MORE likely to deescalate and avoid conflict. The kind of person who feels tough when they carry and decides they ain’t gonna take no shit from nobody is the same kind person who would pick fights in bars in they were that guy’s size. The term I use for these kind of people is “punk.”

  12. Keep your political bullshit out of the world of football. I don’t follow NFL as it is and I continue to have no reason to. Voluntary ignorance is a sad thing.

  13. Don t fret bob clarified his remarks, Its only semi autos that civilians have no business owning.

As soon as someone says that, it tells me (s)he has not a clue. Those are the ones you take to the range. If they refuse you know they are dogmatic idiots that need a visit from Captain Trips. If they are willing to go — they will probably be the staunchest defenders of the @nd.

“handguns go not enhance our safety” so, that’s why law enforcement officers and our service men and women carry them, because they don’t enhance their safety?

“they exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments and bait us into embracing confrontation” again does this apply to law enforcement and military because they carry guns everyday for their job?

if handguns/firearms do all of that evil stuff to people then we have an even bigger problem than he thinks. there are tens of thousands of LEOs in out great country that are liable to start a fight and begin shooting anything that moves.

someone needs to give bob a medal and call uncle barry and let him know about this very precarious position we now find ourselves in.

  15. OJ didn’t use a gun.
