I’ll admit I am quite anal about picking up my brass (anything above .22LR that is). I don’t reload either, but a couple of my friends do; I usually give it to them but sometime I just get them to tumble it for me and I keep it sorted in a big container.

I don’t pick up the brass since I don’t have a press or any desire for one. At the moment, I mainly shoot .22 and 9mm. There’s little to be gained financially from handloading 9mm around here. For the price difference, considering the amount of work that goes into it, I can just do some overtime instead and come out ahead.
If I was shooting .45 or other expensive stuff I’d be yet another brass chicken.
I do save my .44 casings, but that’s mainly because the revolver keeps them neatly organized for me. One day, I’ll have to get a press and start doing my own loads for that.
My press is not set up yet, but everyone who reloads 9mm does it for around 12$ per 100. There isnt really a lot that goes into reloading pistol ammo and you can have 100r in way under 5 mins easy.Do you make enough on 1.5 OT to match that savings?
I live in Norway, where prices and wages are a bit different.
I did the quick calculations now. Factory 9mm (Geco or Magtech 124gr FMJ, bought them both at that price) ammo costs me NOK 1.50 per round. To make the same ammo would cost me 1.20 per round in supplies. Considering I could re-use the brass a couple of times, we’re down to around NOK 1 (which is what most homeloaders in my club budgets).
That means for my current wage (without OT), I’d have to load 340 rounds per hour (With OT, that number goes up to 510). That’s picking up the casings, sorting them, cleaning, and reloading.
Then comes the price of the equipment. I’m gonna have to reload 12000 rounds of ammo just to pay off a decent press, not counting the manhours spent loading those 12000.
So.. homeloading 9mm here in Norway simply doesn’t add up.
If I was shooting .40 or .45, which is hella expensive here (about three times the cost of 9mm), the math would be quite different. I’d be picking brass like a crazy man :D
I reload, but since I work a lot of overtime, I buy steel case or cheap brass case stuff. The only things I’m religious about reloading are my .45acp for competition and .308Win. There’s no point in reloading 9mm because even if you use cheaper lead bullets, it’s about the same price as WWB.
And when ammo prices go totally insane, I shoot my .22s and Mosin Nagant.
I reload 9mm for about 140$ per 1000 rounds. Don’t know about you but saving 100$ for every 1000 rounds is pretty good. Even steel case is 200$ for 1000. I’m lucky enough to have a free source of brass so that helps. It’s fun to reload and there is this great feeling to fill up an ammo can after spending an hour at the press. Even for 9mm it’s totally worth it.

I do not reload but I think leaving brass behind is inconsiderate.
This. I have a few thousand rounds of 223/5.56 brass in bags and a thousand or so each of 9mm and .45 I’ve shot over the last couple years. I do it because i’m a nerd and will eventually know someone who can use the brass.
This. At an indoor range I hit I do not because they have members who collect it, but when outdoors me and my group definitely pick up after ourselves. It’s particularly irritating when people leave all their spent casings and camp trash behind as well as busted beer cans/bottles they’ve shot.
The guys i know who reload are similar to the guys i know who tie their own flies for fishing. They both have wives and kids they hide from in their room in the basement.

i reload certain things, but not 9mm, as it’s so cheap. .44 and .45 anything is more than worth it to roll yourself. it’s one of the reasons i also shoot a lot of revolvers as they keep the brass in a steel cylinder just for me to dump in the range bag. there’s a big, fancy new indoor range here in Lower Alabama that i refuse to patronize simply because it’s their policy that if brass hits their floor they own it.
I have a buddy that reloads so I give it to him and he pays me back for it. What I hate are the guys at the range that pick up my brass while I’m reloading or changing targets. They swoop down like vultures to steal my cases before they are even cool.
I like to shoot the old stuff so I reload. Large cases in small batches are a lot less tedious then
say, 1000 rounds of tiny little 5.56 or 9mm.
