Moose Steps To The Wrong Snowmobiler And Gets Glocked

Moose aren’t scared of anyone:

Moose-Gets-GlockedThe guy definitely did the responsible thing.  The safety of his son and him is much more important.  Of course the YouTube comments are rife with wild animal professionals.  “But he should have…..”

  1. He could have handled things a better way… like carrying with a round in the chamber.

Kidding… In this very situation, this particular wild animal was definitively aggressive and threatening, with no apparent reason, and between a human and this moose’s life, no hesitation…

  2. Yep moose are not scared of much, and they’re so big they might kill you even when not aggressive.

He did his best to scare it off, it was aggressive, now hopefully they’ll retrieve the meat because them are YUMMY!

  3. What kind of idiot carries an empty gun?

  4. That moose was tactical as fuck…..he just met a better operator is all…

    1. Ha!

  5. That thug moose was trying to commit a stronghoof robbery. He got what he deserved!

  6. Why the hell didn’t he have a round in the chamber?
Are there some states where you can’t legally carry chamber loaded?

    1. Maybe he’s Israeli?? They have snowmobiles and moose and shit.

  7. I only have one problem with this.
    1. The moose has the right of way. The snowmobiler was approaching the animal. Had he been in a National Park (which he was not), he would have been fined and possibly jailed.

Once the moose starts coming at you, things change. Having met both grizzlies and moose in the wild. I’ll take the grizzly any day, they are much easier to predict.

    1. This is kinda giving the guy the bias, but the video starts with the moose in sight. my guess is he waited, it didn’t move, and he finally decided to give it a yell and some throttle to scare it off. Someone with no experience at all (i’m guessing) might have been quicker to draw, I got the picture that the guy had done this before and didn’t expect an incident.

Only thing I think he should have done differently is make sure it was dead. Looks like the moose is still alive at the end of the video and there’s no need to let the thing suffer. I would have quickly popped off a few into it’s head to finish it off before moving on.

Oh yeah, and had a round chambered in the beginning…

    1. agreed, at least put it out of its misery. It didn’t look like a moose qrf was on its way but i guess you never know.

  9. The moose was innocent. This man invaded the land.
The moose was being friendly, otherwise it would have easily fucked this guy up. It barely charged him.
The snowmobiler should have turned around and left. He was blood thirsty and violent; the moose did not have to be killed. Whats next, shoot someone who blocks you off while driving?

The man has horrible accuracy. It would have been humane with a single shot to the head (like a real hunter would), or he could have shot its knee and been able to escape because moose can’t run with a broken knee. A warning shot could have prevented this all together. Instead of carrying a gun this man should carry less lethal bear mace. By the time he gets far enough away he should call the park rangers and let the professionals deal with the animal. Think of the children, your own son right behind you, and the moose as well. It may have offspring with no parent moose to fend for them anymore.

      You’re a twat.

    2. “he could have shot its knee and been able to escape because moose can’t run with a broken knee.”

Yea shooting the moose in the knee and leaving while the moose hobbles around with a broken leg and eventually bleeding out or dying a slow, painful death from infection is way more humane than what the guy in the video did. You sir are a dumbass.

    3. The man invaded the land? Who told you that? Where is it located? Do you even know it?

A single shot to the head?
First, not everybody has the time nor the resources to train and train and become such a badass operator/shooter that you can shoot a moving, scary target, from a snowmobile, with gloves, after being hit by that damn animal?
Second, do you know how thick this kind of skull is? They use to fight by slamming their heads against each other, and I bet one single hit could put you down for good! In case you wonder, Glocks DO NOT shoot dum-dum rounds, nor a caliber used to hunt this kind of animal. Maybe it was necessary to shoot twice to knock it off definitively.

Shooting it in the knee? Ever heard that a wounded animal is even more dangerous?

Shooting someone who blocks you off while driving? If this dude uses violence against you and assaults you while you’re just trying to tell him to move, hell yeah you should shoot him!!

Oh God I love feeding trolls…

    4. lol, nice troll, just enough crazy to be believable, just enough sarcasm to get the wink across, and an inside joke density to rival XKCD. Think of the children indeed. I give you a perfect 10 sir, well done.

    5. Well trolled sir. Well trolled.

    6. Troll

    7. Obviously not a gun owner, or at least not one who has taken the time to educate him/herself. Fire a warning shot? I think he did. Shoot the moose in the knee? Are you kidding? Moose kill people, and the Moore’s life is not as valuable as the human’s. Get over it.

    8. Never turn your back on a Moose dude. Big Moose dicks in your ass are bad for your health. Get yourself a check up before it’s too late.

“Should have turned around and left”

You try turning a snowmobile around, also you’ll notice the embankments on the side of the trail, I suspect they are quite a bit higher than they look in the video, thus giving him even less space to do so. While I do feel bad for the moose, the guy had his kid with him, he didn’t have the time or luxury of trying to solve the situation civilly, he needed to end it quickly and effectively and that’s exactly what he did.

  10. BULL$%*&.

As a Mainer, who lives with these critters, I can tell you that this guy was 100% WRONG. Period.

If you see a moose, you need to stay at least 100 yards away. Their fight or flight reflex extends out that far. If a moose is blocking your trail, tough. You wait until the moose moves off. Period.

I’ve had to sit, stopped, on the interstate for 5 minutes, while a moose stood in the middle of the road. That’s what you do.

In case you haven’t noticed, while Maine moose are doing well, they’re dying out in some other areas of the country. Before you go into the woods, you have to learn what it is OK, and what it is NOT OK to do. Getting close to a moose, and executing it when it does what moose do is NOT OK. It is a criminal act.

    1. ENDO-Mike Avatar

I think this is basically equal to you being on the interstate waiting patiently on a motorcycle, and the moose charging / attacking you. You’d just let it do that, and likely kill you?

I’ve came up on deer and moose snowmobiling before too and got closer than I would have liked. That type of thing happens when you blast around corners at 60mph+ on a groomed trail. Thankfully nothing happened to me, but I did have a close call with a deer on a turn on a lake once a long time ago.

      1. If you’re on the highway stopped on your bike, and you are 100 yards or more away, the moose won’t charge (and in the very, very, rare chance that it did – you’d be justified in shooting it). If you surprise a moose at a closer distance, and it charges, as far as I’m concerned you are ok to shoot it to preserve your life. But – you are still morally in the wrong. You’re driving too fast for the visibility even if the quality of the trail will allow it. It’s like driving your car at 65 through a fog on the highway. Yeah, you can do it. But it’s wrong.

The guy in the vid didn’t do that. He stopped a safe distance away, then started hollering at the moose, then he restarted the sled and moved in far too close. That’s a crime in the state of Maine. It’s harassing the moose. He’d have gotten a ticket from a game warden for that.

That’s the whole point of keeping some serious distance from those critters. You don’t get to legally place yourself in a position where the animal’s natural reactions will result in its death.

      2. Mike, I’d say I agree with Rich only in one respect: the guy handled it totally wrong. I’d recommend something more like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVS1UfCfxlU

Considering he did everything wrong confronting that moose, like waving and yelling (only makes them more wanting to club you) and having quiiiiiite the options to just drive around it, shooting it, and doing it rather god damn badly, he is a twatt.

I live in a nation that grinds to a halt in october, becuse then it is moose murdering season (they are delisch to grill), and must say f- as a grade for everything about this.

  12. Rich is right. Lets say a cow is in the middle of the road and you have to get round it but it wont move or comes at your vehicle, do you think you really have the right to kill it? wrong you will be fined for the cow and possibly up to 2 or 3 offspring. just because it is wild doesn’t give you the right to kill it. go fu@@ing around or go to a different part of the woods. the guy is definitely a douche for not doing a double tap. his kids are behind him right kill the moose.

  13. Where was this guy’s backup? His overwatch should have sniped the moose from a distance.

For that matter, where was the moose’s overwatch? Don’t they normally travel in packs? One will stand in the clearly marked path and say something like “Hey buddy, can I bum a smoke?” and while you are distracted his buddies get around behind you.

If Michelle Obama had a son, he would have looked like that moose.

    1. Exactly. Moose Tactics 101.

  14. I’m a hunter, not a PETA freak, but I think he was in the wrong. Seems to me he was a little to close to begin with. Having a gun is good, avoiding using it is better. It really only became aggressive when he approached it while yelling, which the animal could have easily interpreted as being aggressive. It’s pretty common knowledge that you need to give moose a wide berth. He should have stood off a couple hundred feet, drawn his pistol, chambered a round (actually he should have done that when he left the house), and waited the animal out. Even ignoring the controversy regarding the moose dying, his actions put himself more at risk than necessary. This is the kind of crap people point to when they seek to ban our right to carry.

  15. The only thing he did wrong was forget his damn bbq.

  16. I have a serious question. I don’t know anything about snowmobiles. Do they have a reverse gear? Seems like backing up and letting Bullwinkle leave would have been a good option.

  17. I’ve got several problems with it:

    1. He videoed the whole thing.
    2. He left the evidence in plain sight.
    3. He “talked about sex with virgins,” or otherwise put his actions up for review.

Looks like self defense. I wouldn’t have handled it the way he did, but he was well within his rights.

  18. The real question: What caliber was used?

    1. 10mm w/ comp barrel obv

  19. Not living in moose country, this video made me realize I didn’t know how it deal with a moose in the road. Now that I’m an expert thanks to Google it looks like he could probably have just waited the thing out, which appears to be the general recommendation. Of course once it charged rather than leaving he had to make a quick decision. Hopefully he learned to keep on in the pipe and to careful approaching wild animals in the future.

Interestingly I also learned that female moose kill more people in Canada than any other animal, but there has never been a fatal moose attack in the American North-East.

Reminds me that one of my fondest memories of my military service in Alaska is seeing a moose chasing a brand-new 2LT West Pointer through the woods. Still makes me chuckle, 20 some-odd years later.

  22. He didn’t have one in the pipe for safety reasons you fools. It’s a hair trigger and stuffed in your jacket it could go off and you shoot yourself if you wiped out on the sled etc. It took him under 1 second to cock it. Much safer with his son around too. Bunch of clowns you are for calling him on that. This is why the USA has 12,000 gun deaths a year cause half of them are accidents. Poor gun safety! Literally took him under one second to cock it and yes safety switch can come off if you fly off that sled. Think about it

      Glocks don’t have safety switches…

    3. Actually, 2/3 of the gun deaths in America are suicides- a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

  23. Where did he hit the moose? I didn’t expect that caliber handgun to incapacitate an animal that size. Also is that considered a small moose?

  24. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw5HJaS6GOs
That was a dangerous situation. Could have been handled better.

Now THIS is a close encounter with a moose.

Having shot dangerous animals on more than one occasion in the course of my profession, I’m of the view the snow machine pilot pressed the issue. Rule Numero Uno: keep your distance. The rider put himself and the animal in danger by closing when he didn’t need to. Said another way, the rider provoked the animal.

This shooting was unnecessary at best. That he didn’t finish the job prior to riding away was cruel.

If someone attacks you, you may use lethal force if your life is endangered. Same thing if someTHING attacks you, and your life is endangered, light it up.

  28. I’m disappointment with the performance of the RIP bullets, figured I’d be seeing trash can lid sized hole in the that beast, but at least that Glock 42 worked once he pumped some ammo into it.

  29. The only thing that I can say is that he should have mercifully finished the moose. When he drove by him a shot to the head would have been proper rather than allowing him to die more painfully.

  30. what a dumb fuck he got no business even being up in the woods if he would have backed off and waited a bit the moose would have moved on I am a hunter and I have encountered quite a few

  31. 30 years I have lived in Alaska, been charged by a moose three times. This guy made two mistakes. The first is he got closer after spotting it. By approaching it he engaged the moose on its terms. The second, he didn’t finish it. Not a video that is anything to be proud of by any means.

  32. YouTube video taken down, here is a link to the video on LiveLeak:

    http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=008_1393078390

I agree with the others who think this guy was in the wrong. While human lives and safety will always trump that of animal life, this shooting was unnecessary. Guy totally and without cause antagonized the moose until it understandably attacked. Got no problem killing a moose for food or to protect oneself, but this A-hole killed it so he wouldn’t have to shut off his engine and wait a few minuets. Then he blasts right around the poor thing without batting an eye.

  33. Youtube is dumb for removing this. But I dunno, regardless of whatever he did right or wrong he was armed which saved his life in the end.

  34. most newer snow machines have reverse on them he’s so dumb he didn’t think of that

  35. Some points for you armchair quarterbacks, from a snowmobiler who has more moose in his yard right this minute than you’ve seen in a year:

One; not all snowmachines have reverse- I’d bet less than a quarter of them. And for those brands that offer it, it’s generally an option. Even if his sled had reverse, note there was another sled behind him. If *that* sled didn’t have reverse, they’re stuck. And even if they both had reverse, how far do you back up and how long do you wait?

Two: Note the trail they’re on. Note how the moose steps off the trail and sinks. If the snowmachines had tried to get off the trail to pass or move elsewhere, unless they could pour the throttle on and keep some significant momentum, they’d have sunk and gotten stuck. As far as both participants are concerned, they’re fighting in a hallway- or, perhaps more appropriately, on a high catwalk. First one to fall off, loses.

Three; his actions up until the shooting were entirely correct. The majority of moose in such a situation would have run off, scared away by the noise and smell of the sled, the noise of the shouting, etc. It’s common and appropriate. That moose, however, was likely tired from having to walk through chest-deep snow, and found itself on a sort of refuge- a path it could walk on without as much effort- and didn’t feel like being chased off of it.

Four; the guy was charged twice. First one was a bluff, second was for real. Even a small moose outweighs both the sled and the rider. The guy on the sled could easily have bought it during that first contact, or the moose might not have even stopped and turned when he did. Had the moose kept flailing even for just another second or so, it could have easily broken the guy’s arm or disabled the guy’s sled or both.

And five, the guy had his son with him. If the choice is to cap a moose or let it beat me to death in front of a kid, the moose is gonna buy a bullet.

It’s regrettable, sure, but completely justified.

One, right when the video starts, there is a trail that cuts to the left, instead he passes it clapping drawing more attention.

Two, when they get to the clearing, there are plenty of other tracks from different directions so that wasn’t the only trail to that location.

This guy had plenty of options before the first contact and was too stupid or roided up to respect that he doesn’t own the forest.
