Smooth Bore Shotgun Barrels V.S. Rifled Shotgun Barrels

Demolition Ranch does a test:

Demolition-Ranch-ENDO-Selector-SwitchNeither barrels have any choke.  Interesting results.  I suppose the explantation is the centrifugal force is spinning the shot inside the barrel, then when it gets out it has all that momentum and spins out of the wad.  Rather than in a smooth bore the only force is pushing it forward… no spin.  Too unpredictable for home defense if you ask me.

Thoughts?

That was pretty cool. Also – the mannequin in the background looked creepy as fuck.

I did some testing of an 18.5″ rifled bbl with Remington 9 shot buck a few years back and found that the pattern was roughly 7 feet in diameter at 7 yards. This 1 foot of diameter per 1 yard to target seemed to hold true as well. We decided that it was the centrifugal force imparted on the shot that was to blame. (there was an occasional stray fwiw)

It was actually quite funny when it happened. I had my new rifled slug bbl and went to qualify it. Shot slugs at 50, then 25 yards and switched to buck at 15. I scored ONE hole in the very bottom of a 3′ target. The others didn’t laugh, because I could mostly outshoot them and I mean DAMN who misses with a long gun from 15 yards!?? So I was WTF and asked the instructor for permission to fire another round since my score wasn’t going to qualify after that anyway. He said sure and result was no hits. Damn, gun looks ok. Shots felt fine. WTF is going on here. Permission to shoot from the 7yd line. Bang- ah, I saw where a couple of those hit (the dirt). Move up again and finally figure out whats happening.

Various folks online did similar tests with the Taurus Judge over the past few years and came to similar conclusions wrt shotshells and rifled barrels: not a good combo because PHYSICS. The Judge and firearms like it are more of a novelty than practical SD options because of that poor patterning, IMO.
