Sideways shooting made Wikipedia

As the “Side Grip”

The side grip is a technique for shooting a handgun in which the weapon is rotated about ninety degrees and held horizontally instead of vertically (as is normally done). Shooting a gun in this way has no practical benefit under most circumstances and makes proper aiming very difficult, but the style has become somewhat popular in rap culture and among street criminals (who do not often use the gun sight) due to its portrayal in U.S. film and television since the 1990s.

Sadly there is no mention of Birdman Weapon Systems – Homeboy Nyte Sytes

  1. Those Nyte Sytes are classic. Of course, the Glock ‘n’ Gut has come to fruition with the availability of several pistol bayonets.

I’m glad to see a quality site like Wikipedia get an article about the side grip.

  2. Once upon a time I actually saw a pistol that HAD sights mounted on the side. I suppose if you use a laser-grip it would work. :D

  3. I have always thought this was silly, too.

But if this is authentic, it appears that the FBI endorsed it.

“NOTE 1: The weapon will recoil backwards and to the weak side of the grip. This sideways motion can move the weapon off the target. It is helpful to tilt the weapon to the weak side from 45 to 90° (it will vary with the shooter). The recoil-induced motion will then more nearly stay within the target outline.

Thanks a lot for the link! I just created a new post about it and credited you with a link to your blog.

  4. Actually the article is wrong, and any good shooter would know this; It is naturally an inaccurate weapon (I mean pistols) except at very close range. The short barrel coupled with its hand-held aspect make it inherently so, but there’s another factor. Any good shooter will tell you that its IMPERATIVE to “squeexe” the trigger slowly after taking careful aim so as not to “jerk” the trigger, which pulls the guns barrel a few degrees off to the dominant side. While at the barrel that may only be a few degrees, at the taget, that means the difference between a hit or miss.

With the gun in an upright position, and in the heat of a gun battel, where there is no time to gently SQUEEZE thet rigger, all shots will get pulled off to the right for a right handed shooter and vise-versa. ROTATE the gun 90 degrees counter=clockwise and an amazing thing happens; Shots are still pulled off target, but UPWARDS so that if you aim at the stomach, those previous “misses” will now be hits to the chest, neck or head, depending on the distance from the target.

The comment about not using the guns sights is accurate; most amateur shooters wouldn’t bother to try to use the pistols sights in the heat of a gun battle, they fire as many shots as they can as quickly as they can in the general direction of thier target.

So this is not actually a “STYLE” thing (gangsta) but it does actually have a practical TACTICAL advantage.

  5. Almost forgot something; the comment saying it’s due to comphensating for the recoil of the weapon is wrong as well. Recoil with a pistol is always UP if you’re holding it in the traditional position, because the pistols grip is UNDER the barrel… and usually with good (high velocity) ammo and at short ranges, the bullet leaves the barrel before the recoil can effect it very much.

Since jerking the trigger pulls the barrel off target just BEFORE the weapon fires (we’re talking split seconds here) trigger jerk has MUCH more effect on accuracy than recoil does.

All of this of course is just my experince and humble opinion…

  6. You can fire sideways gangsta this can be used to create a sweeping motion .using the recoil as momentum
