Ballad Of The Black Gold – Oil Covered Glocks

Not sure how many of you like rap, but as I mentioned before i’m a huge fan.  It’s pretty much all I listen to.

Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek (a.k.a. Reflection Eternal) are what I would refer to as “intelligent rap”, meaning the songs usually have a message, and the videos don’t just contain guns, girls, cars, and other eye candy.

Since this is a gun blog, I noticed this in their new video ‘Ballad Of The Black Gold’:

Looks like a compact model Glock… not sure what caliber.  The trigger discipline is nothing to write home about, but I still thought the idea of a Glock dripping in oil was a good visual in the context of the song.

For those that normally wouldn’t give rap a chance, I urge you to give the song a try. At the very least watch the video on mute.

If you’re still with me after that, and you are fiendin’ for more I urge you to check out Talib Kweli’s albums. The new album, Revolutions Per Minute, isn’t bad.. but if you really want to hear some classics check out Train of Thought or The Beautiful Struggle.   Another album I have to plug while I’m at it is Black Star … it is  in my top 10 favorite albums of all time.  On that album you get 13 tracks of both Talib Kweli and Mos Def, who some of you may know from his impressive movie career (IMDB Page)

More power to him for daring to be different. However, his politics are awful, and I’d almost rather listen to rap songs about gangsters, fat booties, and 22 inch rims.

  2. I’m really glad to see a gun blogger who likes rap! Most gun nuts are usually very conservative, traditional, and midwestern, which isn’t bad at all, but it’s hard to find people who are into guns and also into good stuff. keep up the good posts. Word.

Yea it does seem like guys like us are a minority in the gun community. Glad you like my blog! If you are interested in seeing my top albums check out my reply to foxtrot below.

You know what’s even more rare? People who like guns and listen to Indie or Stoner rock, or maybe some electronica or breakbeat.

I’m sure that my musical taste makes me sound like some kind of pothead-hipster-douchebag, but I promise I am still very “midwestern” if not conservative or traditional.

I think the reason so many of us here in the Midwest enjoy firearms is because we can just step out of our backdoor and onto prime firing range territory.

        Yes, it is nice. :D

Yea your taste in music for a gun enthusiast is definitely just as rare, if not way more rare!

I agree about the prime range territory. I love the midwest (except for winter).

  4. what are your top 10 favorite albums?

      1. I agree completely with you guys man, I feel like such a minority in the gun world listening to rap and hip hop. Even moreso because I’m really in the 1911 world, which I think I’m the ONLY one who is in the hip hop culture. I’m a DJ and I make beats, and can’t live without my custom 1911’s (no, not some cheapy Kimber’s either, not hatin though) or tuning them, how’s that for rare? When you posted that comment about wearin air forces, I was like word? A gun blogger who wears forces? I like this guy ha I def agree with you on some of those albums man, classics, esp ATLiens and Southerplayalisticadillackmusik.

Judgin by your music choices, you listen to People Under The Stairs at all? Check em out, guaranteed you’ll like some of their stuff too. “The Breakdown” and “The L.A. Song” come to mind in particular.

keep up the good ish Mike, I stay checkin this blog pretty much every day now.

Glad to have you as a reader Dan. 1911s, Rap, DJ’ing… yea that’s definitely rare! That’s cool that you are a DJ, I envy you guys. You make it look so easy though, it’s frustrating when guys like me play around with the equipment and it doesn’t sound good. :P

Something you might be interested in… I’m not really familiar with DJs outside of Rap (so maybe he is well known), but my sister put me onto this guy “Nosaj Thing”, have you heard of him? There is a bunch of songs and videos of his up on youtube, it’s pretty crazy to watch him.

I checked out those People Under The Stairs songs you mentioned… Good stuff! I had not heard of them before.

First thing that came to mind when you used “Revolutions per Minute” and “album” in the same sentence was Rise Against. Not generally a fan of rap because it usually lacks a good message.
