Afghanistan In The UK – VBS.TV Documentary

I haven’t got a chance to watch this yet, but VBS.TV doesn’t usually let me down.

Watch it and let me know what you think.

  1. I am frankly amazed that a serving soldier could be labouring under the misapprehension that British bullets are smaller than US ones. It’s probably a Chinese Whispers version of something he’s been told about the L2A2 bullet – which is of course 5.56, but has a strengthened jacket to prevent fragmentation. The upshot is that British bullets are to that extent, designed to wound. The reality is that the MoD and army believe that even non-fragmenting 5.56 is good enough to kill or incapacitate. They haven’t deliberately designed it to wound per se. Whether they’re right is another argument of course.

You got me intrigued JonMac. I gotta watch it this weekend.

  2. Yeah, it’s worth a watch – I’d read about our virtual Afghan village, but this is much more than has ever been shown of it in use. The banter and off-colour jokes are a good insight into British army life as well. Not to mention the impenetrable accents.

The bullet thing I went off on a tangent about earlier just shows up how much of a gun culture we lack here. Most recruits will never have even seen a real gun before they’re handed an SA80.
