Oil Filter Suppressor

The adapter is available – HERE (bottom of page)

$55 gets you the adapter which is the part you register with the ATF according to the website.  The oil filter is considered the removable expansion chamber.

Pretty cool as a novelty. Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be any videos on YouTube of people using one of these things.

It’s too bad there wasn’t more specs on how to use it, and noise reduction info on the website.

It would be funny if the same company came out with a set of EXTREME hi-rise sights especially for this application. LOL

  1. looks like a AN fitting (from any performance auto store) with the same thread size as the oil filter (testing would lead you to find the best size filter to use) on one end, the other threads does not matter much as long as the id of the non filter threaded end can be bored or drilled to accommodate a .500×28 tap through it.

I just googled it, and holy that does look like an AN fitting. I wonder if that company is just flipping a few dollar perfectly legal part for $55 because of the context it will be used.

      1. it is and they are. lol i used them all the time when doing fuel systems and dry sump oil systems.

  2. i should add all NFA rules apply ;)

  3. I await the testing on various brands of oil filters, to determine which suppresses noise best. Fram? Cheap, cheap, cheap.

You first Mikee :P I’ll feature your writeup on the blog.

  4. I’ve gotta try this!

The filter/suppressor reminds me of this: http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2009/10/16/worlds-largest-gun-suppressor/

holy that large suppressor is intense!

hehe yea. Someone needs to come up with a custom holster for this thing too!

    2. Another acronym that might be appropriate to describe this overall concept: POS. Maybe I’m just being a Negative Nancy for overlooking the joy of doing something just because it can be done, but this doesn’t seem very useful. It looks like a good way to get a face full of used oil (the filter in the picture doesn’t look new). Wouldn’t be worth the $55+200 to me anyway!

        POS = Peaceful Oily Suppression ? :P

For some reason I figured they would be using new oil filters, but I guess you could maybe go used and and get the same db reduction.

        1. Peaceful Oily Suppression… Touché Mike, touché.

It looks like a used filter to me. I don’t know exactly how they work, but they’ve got those holes in the top… But, it is just for a .22, so maybe there’s so much room in the filter that it can expand all the gases without worry of enough pressure to blow anything back out. Still seems kind of pointless to me; what’s the fun of shooting if you can’t aim at your target?

          1. when your up close and personal!!!! that real fun..

  6. There’s mention of a suppressor made using an oil filter in the AFTE Journal vol42 no.3 Summer 2010 (piece by Luke Haag). If I read correctly, it was the best of the bunch tested by them, and affords perhaps a 15db reduction in report from a 9mm.

That’s pretty cool. This is probably a dumb question, but I wonder if people run them wet or strictly dry?

  7. A -8AN line is .500″ ID.

cool, I wonder if it’s the required 28 TPI?

  8. My attitude is if its stupid and it works, its not stupid.

Yea that sums up how I feel too.

Stupid would be those screw on “fake” suppressors that are just a piece of threaded bar stock made to look like a suppressor but actually only ad weight.

  9. FRAM! FRAM FRAM FRAM!!

FRAM-FRAM—-FRAM = two to the chest, head shot
    Couldn’t resist.

After market threaded barrel..135.00..an adapter.. 3.50.. filter,,4.00 .. shoots great with Glock 23. Not silent, but is quiet.

What size adapter for glock 23?

  11. Will it work for a .45

  12. Something like this would fit on an AR-15 w/ a removable flash suppressor: http://goo.gl/E5wxUP. And if you were to add a FRAM filter to it, could possibly lower the sound output of the AR-15 by 20dB or so… Not that I would know from experience, just what I’ve been told. Use caution though because this same person told me that the back pressure can lock up the action on the AR-15 and you’ll have a fun time getting it unjammed. Good for one shot only, depending on your ammo. Might be more suited for bolt action rifle.
