The Secret World Of Extreme Militias – TIME Magazine

What distinguishes groups like this one from a shooting club or re-enactment society is the prospect of actual bloodshed, which many Ohio Defense Force members see as real. Their unit seal depicts a man with a musket and tricorn hat, over the motto “Today’s Minutemen.” The symbol invites a question, Who are today’s redcoats?

Not without its bias and the usual errors …

M-16s cut down the perimeter guards. Once past the rear gate, the raiders fanned out and emptied clip after clip in a barrage of diversionary fire.

  1. huh, I dont know how to feel about this… I’m in Ohio myself, and if and when TEOTWAWKI happens now im going to have to protect my family from civil break down AND these self styled saviors?

    Great.

Because we alllll know what happens after things break down, these militia men will suddenly decide that it is their duty to create a new government with their own ideals. Jeez… guess this is an excuse to go buy more guns. :P

    1. Haven’t read the full article yet, so this is just a knee jerk reaction. The second part of your comment about them “suddenly decide that it is their duty to create a new government with their own ideals.” Isn’t that what a group of militants some 200+ years ago did? I think they were called the founding fathers? No sure, but I think they were tired of the bullshit government that didn’t represent their interests so they decided it was time to start governing themselves; now in this county we supposedly celebrate that spirit every year in the beginning of July… I’m not stating an opinion here, I’ll wait until after reading the full article to do that, just something to think about.

      1. That is exactly what the founding fathers did. It is also what the Bolsheviks did in Russia. No worries right?

        We got lucky.

        1. Yea we got lucky, but those guys haven’t been around for quite some time… After reading the whole article I’m going to stay neutral, it’s just not worth getting into it at this time. I’ve just got one question for those who are frightened by these guys playing army, are the current powers to be any more trustworthy? Hillary Clinton is out Secretary of State, why aren’t more people worried about that?

          1. Oh yes I agree 100 percent, I don’t trust any politicians. I’m just not a fan of imagining a group full of the average people I see at gun shows running my country either. You know the ones I’m talking about.

            1. The founding fathers did what they had to do, and that was fine… but after reading that article, and knowing what kind of idiots we have here in this day and age… im not seeing any founding fathers in that bunch.

there are many groups like this in almost all states. Ohio actually has quite a few. including one that claims they are the reserve to the national guard. its a lot of wannabes and has-beens. when i ask them what they do they just tell me they train for whenever all of the military is deployed and no one is left in the US. i get a little kick out of it. they buy all their uniforms from the govt surplus and they even have a few class 3 dealers that let them play with their 249s and M4s

What errors? I fire through many clips all the time.

  4. @Eightbyte — He’s talking about the distinction between magazines and clips. In all likelihood, the article subjects were “emptying magazine after magazine” out of their “AR-15s,” and not what the author said. Personally I don’t mind the conflation of the two terms, but it seems to be a bugaboo every gun blogger has in common. :)

  5. When someone refers to a magazine as a clip and an AR-15 as an M-16 it shows a lack a basic understanding of firearms which really detracts from their credibility when writing about such things. Trying to speak with authority about things you know little about shows a lack of respect for anyone who might read your statements and is kind of annoying to me.

      +1 to that!

  6. Well, I still feel its a BIT nitpicky to correct someone when they say clip though, I’d have to correct most of the people I see =/…
I remember a time when I had a long argument about whether the AK was long stroke or short stroke…
Same deal for the AR and direct impingement vs the ljungman system… I remember a guy couldn’t take it when people mentioned the AR-15 as a direct impingement rifle
