I have a friend who insists on concealed carrying a makarov. His argument, quote: “It’s just the right balance of concealibility and manly-looking-ness.” Those are the two factors he considered. Nothing else.

And to preserve my self esteem: 9x18mm Makarov. Suck it, cat.

Personally, I feel like the Soviet Union’s transition from the 7.62 Tokarev to the 9mm Makarov was a mistake… then again I have a bias towards the good old TT-33…

Personally the 9×18 round is almost perfect for ccw and personal defense. I don’t plan on engaging armored targets, and don’t want to worry about collateral damage. It has more energy than a .380, is cheaper than even most 9×19 you can find, and the pistols are extremely well made and priced well.

As far as the “obscure caliber” that’s also not quite true either. I’d be willing to bet that the 9×18 round has silenced more political dissidents than all other rounds combined.

I like the 7.62×25 round a lot as well, but I don’t think it would make a good defense or police round. It’s a great military round for the power, penetration and capacity, but in all seriousness, I don’t want the police, or ccw holders with rounds that will zip through more than one person without much trouble…
