Kel-Tec KSG Shotgun Fail

This could be a deal breaker for a lot of people:

The trigger doesn’t reset. If you pull the trigger, and then run the slide while still holding the trigger to the rear like you would on a Remington 870 or a Mossberg, the trigger will simply go dead. We actually tried this on several models and it was the same on each demo gun.

There are a lot of comments over on Caleb’s blog addressing this issue.  Some people suggest a Kel-Tec rep told them this actually only happens on the civilian models, and the LEO ones work as one would expect.  Others have the whole “But but but it’s a prototype!” rhetoric, which I don’t know if I buy either.

I sure hope they fix this issue.

  1. Counterintuitive? Deal breaker.

  2. they should fix the problem, and eliminate the magazine selector switch..

Why would you want to get rid of the selector?
The fact that you can can have two different types of shells, and switch between them on the go, is what makes this shotgun amazing.

    2. The selector is to make the gun legal as a low capacity weapon in states like Illinois where there are restrictions on round capacity. The other point about different ammo is very valid observation too. Right is for PD rounds and left is for the bean bag thingys.

    3. I think it to get around the 10 shot limit.

If they set it up so “slam firing” worked on the pump and then the company released a semi automatic, they would have to come up with a completely different trigger group because the KSGs would make the semi become a full auto.

Deal breaker, I what a weapon that goes bang, everytime I want it to go bang.

If the it’s true about a two models one for “Civie” one for “LEO”; that makes me reconsider any purchases kel tec I would have made in the future.

so someone else pointed out that there were no pictures or video of the left side of the gun.
I think it’s kinda ironic that now we see the left side it comes with bad news.

I have a feeling that kel tec has addressed this issue in production models and this is a pre-production model. If i remember correctly there some problems with the early models of the RFB and they were fixed.

  6. Cheaperthandirt posted this:

Update: We spotted the KSG at the Kel-Tec booth at SHOT Show this year. There were a few different models on display, including this version in OD Green. The action was slick, but the trigger reset appeared to need some work. Kel-Tec assured us that this was only one of a few prototypes and that the actual production models would be fully functional.

IT’ll get worked out and I WILL own one. Someday….

  7. I reallllllllly hope that they get it fixed because I’m either buying a .410 sagia or one of these for myself on my 18th birthday in November.

      I wish I could have afforded a 900$ shotgun when I turned 18, instead I just bought a 400$mossberg :/

  8. I wouldn’t nessessarily say “deal breaker,” at least not for me. I don’t tend to hold the trigger down while working the action anyway. I have a feeling that the LE/Civilian comment was just someone that didn’t know what they were talking about. I’ll bet they fix the problem after reading a bunch of negative news on it.

  9. BTW, what’s wrong with the left side?

  10. I didn’t notice in the video, but from the looks of it….. He does nothing to release the slide after the trigger doesn’t reset. Without being there and seeing it work in person, I would guess it’s just capable of slam firing as it sits, the same way the older Ithaca 37’s will. IF you hold the trigger down, the gun fires when the pump is worked forward.

  11. This is pre-production, based on Nutn’Fancy’s interview with KelTec. I have no doubt that these will be tinkered with before release 3rd quarter of 2011. I wouldn’t buy from the first run, but some time in 2012 I’ll probably purchase one, barring reports that they blow up on your face.

I have it on pretty good authority that the KSG wont be available till july of 2012

      1. That’s perfect timing, right in time for the summer zombie rush…I want one…:)

Trigger reset is an issue, it will have to be corrected. As for LE/nonLE models there are others out there as well. LEO’s need all they can get, often out-guned & out manned!

    1. Hey win the last time you were the cops being out man or outgoing I live in the burbs and go drive around auto m 16 For what your 1 of those dopes who buys into that cops should have guns that civilians shouldn’t have or don’t have a need to have you my friend are an idiot and if you have children there idiots as well n you can have fun in the slave state that is coming 4 me I’ll take a founding fathers attitude

      1. Before you call someone an idiot, you should probably proofread your own statement. Otherwise it’ll end up incoherent and you’ll look like a moron…oops.

      2. You make yourself sound like an idiot. Learn proper grammer. When an officer approaches a car on a vehicle stop, all they are carrying is thier duty weapon. That weapon is issued to the officer, so they don’t have a choice of what to carry. If the person they happen to pull over is a scumbag, the bad guy sitting in the car waiting to shoot the cop will have his/her weapon of choice. Be it a pistol, rifle or shotgun. The officer obviously can not approach every vehicle they stop with gun drawn or with a patrol rifle or shotgun in hand. There are bitches like you in the world who would cry about the police being too aggressive and what not. Plus it’s just impractical. So, hopefully if you can read this, (sorry, I might have used a few big words) you will learn something.

You shouldn’t be slam firing regardless, I don’t even think these shotguns have shipped yet, so im sure it will be fixed, it’s a minor issue.

  16. Big Jim Avatar

Slam firing is irresponsible and stupid. Not an issue for me. I want one.

    1. Agreed. Not sure why so many people shoot like this in the first place. A non-issue for me as well.

Fixed. Our shop got one in Saturday and it is like the old Ithica 37. I held the trigger back and racked it.. Click click click … Fast as you can pump. Now the mag change switch is bigger and metal. Very easy to use. Gun is heavier than I expected but shorter than I expected as well. You could hide this under a waist length coat. Trigger is metal now, unlike what your video looks like. The rails are in the box but you the owner put them on if you want them. Cool gun. Monday when the boss puts her out for sale I might have to snag it first. He is going to ask 990 on these first two.. Price will drop to 700s soon.

So the magazine selector switch… when you expend one magazine tube, do you ahve to change over the selector, or does it change over automatically so you can continue firing?

    1. From what I’ve seen, yes you have to switch it manually. The switch may also serve as a safety switch. Not sure if the gun will fire when the switch is in the neutral position with one round in the chamber.

    2. Here’s a link to the update on the shotgun for anyone who hasn’t seen it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=W638QRLqUyc#at=51

  21. That is first design. Trigger reset is fixed as well as magazine tubes have slots allowing you to know how many shots you have.

  22. Looks like a new CA safety feature.

I sure hope they do a better quality control and build a higher quality firearm in this KSG than in the past as in the Kel-Tec 22. Why is it that everything Kel-tec makes is a plastic piece of crap. You people set up shop in a country that has always been known for it’s gun craftsmanship quality and make a mockery of our great industrialized country . Well go figure we ship our best quality foods and metals to the highest bidders our allies Japan for them to turn it in to safe nuclear energy,,,,Oppppps…..Radioactivity frying my brain as we speak jet stream spreading radiation from Japan west to east around the world. We have some big fish to fry in this world. The former USSR never imagined it would go broke after Afghanistan and Chernobyl , but guess what people! history has a horrific way of repeating itself. Look, it’s Johnny Ringo. I’m your huckleberry.

The KSG is fixed and will be a success for specific buyers who want something different. You must admit, the 15 RDS capacity, ability to easily apply custom mounts and sites, reduced Recoil, short length for close-quarters, balanced weight… These are appealing features for some buyers. If not for you… Don’t get one.

  25. If you look at the official feature video from Kel-Tec, they have addressed the issue with the trigger reset.

  26. The lower rail of the forend where a foregrip is recommended is PLASTIC unlike the upper rail which is metal. Within the first 10 shots using a sig sauer stoplight foregrip, the lower rail shattered, fragmented, and broke off. Very very disappointed. Otherwise, the gun shoots great.

  27. Is this ever going to hit the market? I’m begining to wonder release date changes more than my wife changes shoes

    1. Jim: Odds are, knowing women as I do, the release date will change much less frequently.
