20% Price Increase When Asking For A Glock Clip

These guys are so condescending, I love it:

I could never work at a gun store.   Someday if i’m bored I should grab my girlfriend’s Flip video camera and go down and troll Sportman’s warehouse, gander mountain etc… from my limited experience with the employees at those places I’m sure they all call magazines clips anyway… so the troll wouldn’t be very successful.

  1. I just have one question….

    whats a meh-guh-zayne?

  2. I work at a gun store…I deal with this ALL GOD DAMNED DAY! I carry a paper clip in my pocket to give to people who ask for “clips”.

    1. I carry a paper clip in my pocket to give to people who ask for “clips”.

That’s a good sales tactic – try to alienate the customer and make them feel stupid. He knows what he means, you know what he means. How about just give him what he wants, and if he seems interested, explain the technical difference between the terms. But in the end, the meaning of a word is nothing more than what we understand it to be. And in the end, if the customer comes in and asks for a clip for a 9mm Sig P226, you know exactly what they need.

      1. NotWagner Avatar

Problem is, they won’t ask for a clip for a XXXXX usually.

Around here, it’s “You gotta clip fo uh 9 maine?”

Anyone that stupid deserves to have a chain of 9 paperclips handed to them. There are enough relatively intelligent people that will ask for a “clip” for the exact model firearm they have to cover the loss of that one toolbag with his (insert $25 Florida-built handgun of unknown provenance here)

  3. While I share the video stars’ disdain for ‘clips’, these guys should know better than to call an ACT-MAG for the 1911 a “Beretta magazine”. There WAS a single stack Beretta made, but it was a compact and the magazine looks NOTHING like the one in the video.
Sigh. Damn I hate to see someone rant about something like they’re the expert and they can’t even get the details right. I don’t know it all, and I’m honest about it. There’s too much product out there for anyone to know it all, but do some research people!

“they don’t all fit the same one”

You know what the worst part about that statement is, I’ve heard it before.

“but it’s the same bullet right?, so then it’ll still work”
“no, there are different models of .25 auto pistols”
“but they all use the same bullet right? Why not the same clip?”

I don’t even work at a gun store or anything.

First, the wide-spread ignorance on all things gun-related bothers me too.
That being said, treating your customers like they’re idiots will never work in the long run. Some gun shops get away with it right now because thanks to the ATF, there are very few places to buy the guns people would like to buy right now. Gun store owners are seeking rents off the public because they have attained a valuable license by the Federal government to furnish us with guns. This may not always be the case. In the wake of Heller, McDonald, and hopefully quite a few more rightly-decided cases, I predict that the supply-side of the market will get more robust in the near future.
Pull this internet-wise-guy crap at your store (“here this clip will keep your chips fresh”) when you have real competition and your business will suffer. We’ll all be better off when you are forced to close your doors and we buy our guns at Wal-Mart (something I truly hope doesn’t happen). I would like to see many more small, specialized gun-shops in operation, but sadly many of them employ jackasses who can’t contain their vanity.
Now you’ll prosper if you: employ a little patience, restrain your arrogance for a moment, and gently inform your valued customer of the proper terminology and the history behind it. Posters like the 8.5×11 in this video can help tremendously. You customer will respect you and value your advice. He’ll feel good about giving your his money and he’ll lobby others to do the same.

  6. I wonder if he’d give me a 20% discount for asking for some clips for my M1903

If a customer comes in asking for a clip for his Glock 17, the salesman knows what he wants; why bust the customer’s balls? Just to feel superior? What a jack-ass! How’d he like it if some salesman pulled that attitude on him, when he’s just trying to buy a TV or a computer or something?

  9. Do guys like this just not like guns, or do they just want to keep the hobby all to themselves? There are plenty of nice, friendly ways to get the point across. Maybe just by using the correct terminology. “Yes, sir, our Glock magazines are right over here. Would you like one with the +2 extender while you’re here? That gets you two more cartridges.” Or if someone asks for a generic .25 “clip”, explain that since guns come in all different shapes and have their magazine releases in different locations, that magazines have different shapes too. Tell them that they’re not wrong, that standardization would be a good thing, and that some magazines (like the AR-15 and 1911) have been standardized between manufacturers. It just hasn’t happened with pocket pistols yet.

Most people aren’t stupid, they’re just ignorant. Nobody’s taught them. It’s not their fault. When you meet somebody like that, it’s an opportunity to correct the situation, in a way that makes them feel like they learned something interesting, no like they’ve been condescended to.

Guns are fun. We’re better off when more law-abiding citizens enjoy them and carry them. Let’s not be turning people off to the experience.

  10. If you allow customers to be ignorant of terminology, you aren’t being nice, you’re being a dickhead. It’s not bad salesmanship to correct them, it’s being a good fucking person. Allowing someone to walk around continuing in their dumbassery is a douchey move. We should all strive to raise the intelligence level of all members of our species any time possible. If someone goes in wanting a “Glock Clip” you should correct that shit.

If someone’s driving on the wrong side of the road you don’t just let them keep doing it because it’s not nice to correct them, you tell them to get their fucking ass on the right side. Same principal should apply to mag/clip.

It can be done in a more diplomatic or polite manner than pulling out a chip clip and saying, “Here you go,” with more twang in it than a finely crafted Deering banjo.

I have to hand it to you, I don’t think I could possibly see a more absurd comparison of dissimilar situations today unless I create it myself.

I guess I am the only person that knows the difference between a magazine and a clip. I should keep the answer to myself and let every “cool guy” that works in a gun store get there panties in a wad when he thinks someone is calling a clip a mag. and a mag. a clip. a CLIP sets flush within the stock of the gun. for example a ruger 10/22’s original 10 round CLIP sits perfectly inside the gun however you can get magazines that hold more rounds and stick out from under the gun. another example is the mini 14. it has an original 5 round CLIP but you can buy 10, 20 or even 30 round magazines. with that being said a MAGAZINE always holds more round and can be seen hanging below the gun when shown a side profile of the gun. this the the same across the board. rifles and hands guns. glock. 17 round clip. or a 33 round magazine.

    1. overkill556x45 Avatar
      overkill556x45

Negative. A clip delivers ammo to the magazine. Remove a magazine from a weapon and it no longer stores ammo outside the chamber. How it sits in relation to the firearm has no bearing on whether it is a clip or magazine. For instance, the good ‘ol 03A3, the clip brings ammo into the magazine. My issued M4 had magazines that could be fed from clips and a clip adapter issued with bandoleers. Not trying to be snotty, but the beardy man in the video was correct.

I believe Mail Call and R Lee Ermey did a pretty decent 5 minute talk on clip vs. magazine, which was less snarky than beardy gun store man.

    2. a CLIP sets flush within the stock of the gun. for example a ruger 10/22′s original 10 round CLIP sits perfectly inside the gun however you can get magazines that hold more rounds and stick out from under the gun.

        somebody dosent understand internal magazines.

        1. An internal magazine is one in which it is within the weapon, and rounds are fed into it; it’s not removable, and is often fed by a “clip.” What the 10/22 has is not a box magazine either, because in a box magazine, rounds are stacked; a box magazine can be internal or external. The 10/22 uses a “rotary magazine.”

          1. Ernest Young Avatar
            Ernest Young

Well, yes, but one could argue that many internal magazines are not MEANT to be removed but can be (the the late C96)

            1. Given the proper tools, any internal part of a weapon can be removed!

              1. I dare you to try and remove the chamber from the barrel!

                1. With the proper tools I could.

                  1. Those tools generally being a hacksaw….

That shit’s getting a bit old. From now on when someone says ride, whip, wheels, whatever. CORRECT them and say “it’s an automobile.” Same for old lady, bride, little woman, spouse, she is your WIFE. I have over 20 years in sales experience and I never made one more cent of commission correcting a customers terminology. I’d be willing to bet all of my .223 ammo stock that he wouldn’t correct someone calling up and ordering 100 ar-15 (clips?) It’s hard to believe that gun shops all employ Rhodes Scholars. We have a shop like that down here. Yep, all of the 23 year old police force flunkies hang out in tac gear telling you what is the best weapon/accessories in the most condescending manner possible. We don’t spend money there anymore, just window shop and listen to them degrade what would be great paying customers.

Fuck – I hate it when people ask like they know more than I do!

    1. Kinda like the guys at music stores who have heard 10000 kids come in and butcher the shit out of the first riff from crazy train on a guitar they will never have the cash for.

Not really. We can assume they’re buying magazines for a weapon they already own. It would be more like someone walking into a music store and asking for chords for their guitar, when what they really need are guitar strings. Your comparison is much better than comparing asking for a “clip” to driving on the wrong side of the road!

You’re a retard. Its the same as in, if you work at any kind of retail store for ANY industry long enough, you will get the same old shit on a daily and will eventually become jaded, and at the least, poke fun on the youtubes.

Mag vs clip is pretty common knowledge, or should be. If you want to fuck around, gun guys could start chapping your ass for getting stoppage and malfunction mixed up.

If you own a gun shop, please post a link so we all can know where to shop with your awesome customer service which dosent alienate retards. If not, STFU. You’re not the man in the arena, only a spectator.

        1. You’re a retard.

Being reduced to throwing out personal insults like that (especially those that make fun of an entire class of people who can’t help their disability) is certainly the sign of a grand intellect.

Mag vs clip is pretty common knowledge, or should be.

Among those with a knowledge of firearms, perhaps. Not everyone who owns one reads gun magazines and is familiar with all of the proper terminology, and do you suppose it’s conceivable that a person might go into a gun store to purchase a magazine/clip as a gift for someone else?

If you want to fuck around, gun guys could start chapping your ass for getting stoppage and malfunction mixed up.

Where did I do that? Or are you just making things up at this point? The only place either of those two words appear in this thread is your post.

I assume you drive a car, so you’re an expert in all things related to automobiles. I also assume you own a computer, so you must be an expert in all things related to computers. But if you’re not an expert, I can assume, from your comments, that if you went to an auto repair or computer repair shop and used the wrong terminology to describe something, you wouldn’t be the least bit offended if the person to whom you were speaking was condescending in the way he pointed out that you were a “retard” because you used the wrong term. But in the clip/magazine example, the word “clip” has been used so often in television and movies that it has come to be synonymous with “magazine.” Words evolve to mean what people perceive them to mean. If I call you a “douchebag,” I don’t mean you are literally a female hygiene product, but everyone understands what I’m getting at.

Since you’ve brought the playing field down to the level of junior high school name-calling, I suggest you take your own advice and STFU.

Imagine that, another snide asshole with a degree in psychology from cosmo magazine. If someone is acting a certain way,and a word fits the bill, it’s now junior highish to use that word in reference? Tight! I guess I could say something about how you feel the need to go along behind people in this section and “correct” them, and how this actually points to some personal issue you have, but I’m not into reverse psychology as a defense mechanism.

Reading gun mags is the last place you should look for firearms info.

Im not auto expert, but I do know the difference between wheels and tires(similer misconception), and faggots who drive mustangs.

Sooo you don’t work at a FFL? That’s what I thought.

            Troll on Troller

            1. Let’s see, the whole point of this post regards technical terminology. If you insist on being technical, the term “retard” is a defined term to describe someone whose IQ falls below a certain threshold. I find your use of it ironic, because in school I was part of the talented and gift group and was given IQ tests; statistically speaking, it’s highly likely that you are much closer to that threshold than I am!

About correcting people: you earlier stated that the difference between “magazine” and “clip” was common knowledge. I let it slide that, in that post, you didn’t seem to know the difference between the possessive “its” and the contraction for “it is – it’s.” I would argue that middle school English should be more common knowledge than firearm terminology. I think it’s much more important to be able to communicate intelligently and effectively than to know proper firearms terminology. Which one do you think will get you farthest in life?

Im not auto expert, but I do know the difference between wheels and tires(similer misconception), and faggots who drive mustangs.

”I’m not auto expert.” Why not just say, “Me no auto expert”? ”Similer”? Wanna try that one again? And “faggots who drive mustangs”? You are a sad person if you must resort to absurd personal insults. I’m sure your vehicle is much nicer than the Shelby GT500 in my avatar picture that you’re referring to. The fact that you would even make some ridiculous, petty comment about people who drive Mustangs further substantiates my assertion that you are a petty fool who can’t keep up with the argument, and so resorts to name calling.

Sooo you don’t work at a FFL? That’s what I thought.

              I certainly don’t, but it’s absolutely irrelevant.

Oh, and I’m still waiting for some clarification about your comment regarding me getting “stoppage” and “malfunction” mixed up. Should I expect an explanation on that, or should I just expect you to respond with some more pointless name calling?

Probably so, but if I’m going to be called names by some dipshit that responds in that fashion because he can’t argue the point, and seems to think that alienating customers who aren’t as informed as they could be is a proper way to deal with them, I find myself inclined to respond.

  29. I am so G-D DAMNED tired of this stupid %*#@! arguement. The firearms community, just like the rest of the world, is so full of lingo and jargon and colloquialisms that it makes crap moot.

Did you know that there is a technical difference between rancid and rotten?

Did you know that there is a difference between Catsup and Ketchup?

Did you know when you say “100% confident” you are dead wrong, it is a statistical impossibility?

Did you know that “bone dry” is a quantitative measurement?

Do you know why people use these phrases wrong? Because it is a dick move to nit pick other people’s use of the english language.

Shopper: “I need a clip for my 1911.”
    Dick: “It’s a magazine not a clip. And that’s 1911A1, the 1911 hasn’t been made in 90 years.”
Shopper: “Ok then, you know what I wanted, but you chose to be a dick instead, I’m taking my money elsewhere.”

Stop it! We gun owners/sellers/users know what were talking about. The lack of technical specificity does not inhibit communication. Let it go!
