It mostly went to ROTC marksmanship programs that have since shifted to more PC air rifle if they have a program at all.
Yeah. Even when I was in it was already air rifle and that was some 20 years ago now. We had an ROTC annex built specifically for ROTC(do they still do this?) and had a real range that could support .22lr. It was built in the 60s or 70s. Damn shame they stopped the real deal stuff…but at least they still let them shoot and acknowledge that marksmanship an integral part of the military…well, some parts of being in the military… haha.
ROTC is college. JROTC is High School, level. (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) was using .22 LR on West High’s campus under the bleachers with the sides of the concrete handball court as a back stop, & hay bales & plywood to keep ricochets down. That stopped in the early 1980s. Now they use airsoft guns. I find the whole thing idiotic. Using an airgun to pre-train for using real guns is asking for trouble. Kids should know what to do in the event of a hang fire, jams, cook offs & other situations. An airsoft will just instill bad habits. Airsofts do not jam & cook off, or hang fire. They do not spit hot brass & gases either. It is a sad pathetic joke now. My baby pictures feature Belgian, US & English made rifles, fowling pieces, game birds (dead) & bird dogs, (live at the time), and sometimes other small children, too. So far every child in those pictures is still alive, & none of them have any self inflicted gun shot wounds, missing eyes, or criminal records. Go figure!
I don’t know bout you guys but I’m going to start pulling the bullets on the cheap long
rifle cartridge, then dump the powder and start working up a load of high velocity using
red dot powder. Can’t find the yellow jackets and stingers anywhere. I’ll even drill a
hole in the bullet make it a hollow point. no problem.
I also know how to reload a spent cartridge, so I’ll cut my costs considerably in the future.

The math equals out to $6.50 for a box of 500 rounds, which is what .22lr usually comes packaged as, so you get 10 boxes of 500 rounds. 5000/500*=10*6.5=65.

Hey, I think it is a great deal and if you can steer me towards ammo at 6.5c a round I would be forever in you debt. See, here in the Atlanta area people have seen fit to sell online for .30c a round and have found buyers. I am a hobbyist and have crafted a pretty awesome .22 but can never fire it for more than, what, a magazine or two? I spent all this dough on a great rifle to punch paper and it NEVER gets used! I want to refine my skill, punch holes in paper and have a great time taking out friends and family to do the same. If you are looking to make a buck over cost and have that buck come back to you ten fold then we can really get something started here in Georgia! Lets undercut the competition, bring ammo to those that want it and take these greedy bastards to the bank! At .08c a round you are making money and I have a supply line that is interested in shooters over greed. Maybe we can flip this thing onto the positive and you make a few hundred customers happy?

I also don’t like Remington .22s. Totally inconsistent, bad primers, and the golden goo jams every single one of my semi-auto .22s. And once I bought a 100rd pack of Rem subsonic “match”. Half of the bullets fell out of the cases as I was trying to load my Savage MkII’s magazine. I was only out $3, so I didn’t complain to Remington. CCI or Federal (or AE, which is also Federal) for me from now on. Mixed luck with Winchester.
And when I was in the Army we had .22 adapters for our M16s and M4s, but rarely used them because that would be training and we had sexual harassment briefings to sit through.

At the $90 price for individuals plus $24.95 shipping, that come out to about 2.3 cents per round. Out and about the tubes you can find .22lr at around 4-8 cents per round for the cheapest stuff, not including shipping. I think I’ll be getting me a case!
Well back in ’85 the USAF Basic Training they had .22 adapters for the M-16s. They sucked. I had a day on dirty details cleaning the rifles and the adapters. That really sucked.
I was able to participate in our Company Rifle Team in the National Guard a few years (10) back. We shot our issued weapons (M16’s and Beretta 92’s) and also for practice we used the sub-caliber devices Jim P. is talking about. We also had .22 pistols, I forget what make, but very similar to a Ruger Mk IV, and some kind of single shot .22 target rifles. Very heavy, and not very sexy. We would use up what the program gave us and then we would buy Blazer or whatever was cheap. If you qualified well enough, you would get to shoot in the State Combat Matches. Wilson, IIRC. I think I owe the lion’s share of my learned shooting skill to those old sergeants who ran our program. And thanks a lot: due to following this link, I now have to try to resist having a M1 fed-exed to my door, along with two cases of .22 LR. I have the ciener conversion kits for my 1911, Beretta, and AR, along with a sweet Ithaca lever action that cause me to shoot .22 like it’s water.

I believe I have lost 2 IQ Points just reading this post… Sad Truth is the whole Dam Country is looking for .22LR rounds and very few of us are able to find them at anywhere near a reasonable price… Wal-Mart gets some in 2 times a week but you have no idea when its coming in and its never enough. Some have time to sit around at the store all day for it and scarf it up as soon as it hits the shelf, but for those of us who actually work that is not an option. Mercury being more then difficult to purchase means you cant reload the rounds any more… So bottom line is How do you have effective “Gun Control” ??? Simple, control the ammo…. $6.50 a brick (500 rounds) for Remington 40 gr. lead nose ammo which looks like it’s similar to Remington Thunderbolt … I don’t think .22LR has been that cheap since the 80s. I want to know what the CMP gets it for, if they can sell it for that cheap and still make a profit.

The description states that this ammo was made for a US military contract back in 1995. I assume it was for training purposes back then. Does the military still use .22LR for anything?

Way back when the USAF had an adapter that converted the M-16 to a .22 round for training when they were teaching how to shoot during basic training. I guess they finally dumped it in favor of .223 rounds. The idea was to save money because about 97% of USAF jobs don’t involve carrying a fire arm, at least until you go into a war zone.
I hope the thread is still relevant. They were used by JROTC in a military academy or high school and also ROTC at collage . When I first went to North Central we had a .45 Thompson to train with and mortars (simulated training rounds for the mortar) and three 1911 pistols. A year later (so I was told. Congress passed a act about military academy’s involving children) we had to go to .22 cal competition rifles and .22 match grade pistols. And once a year we went to Ft.Benjamin Harrison and fired M-16’s and 1911’s and had military combat simulations exercises. My point being I went to the JROTC website for my old school and I felt sad.I have air-rifle’s and pistols in my home for training purposes(I live in the city) but there is no substitute for the real thing. I was trying to respond to a poster named Seth who said something like you can’t train or should not on a air weapon(and I am paraphrasing) no jams no misfires,hang fire (that is such a old term I’m surprised he did not include chain fire from the SamWalker) but none the less he is 100% correct. But then again the “new” mission statement is not combat training but leadership. But yes again if you train the leader wrong what happens to the people under his or her command.
