M249 SAW In FLIR Thermal

FLIR stands for Forward Looking Infared:

What you’re seeing is the different heat levels represented by colors. Bright color = hot.

It would be pretty neat to get one of those cameras to fool around with.

  1. pretty dope when its slow-mo in blue and you can see the casings flying

  2. I like how towards the end of the video (1:10, 1:30ish) you can see the IR heat from the gun reflected on the wall (that big blotch of color isn’t there earlier – 0:25). That’s either a really hot gun, or a really sensitive camera (or both!).

FLIR usually is pretty sensitive. As herp derp as the show may be I enjoy watching Ghost Hunters at times, and they have occasionally caught their own heat reflections on a whole lot of materials.

  3. The casings bouncing around are pretty cool. Those are coming out effing hot, as you can attest if you’ve ever caught a .223 down the shirt. That is one hot rifle (both meanings intended).

    1. I have — it sucks. The other thing is I’m a lefty. After a day shooting an M-16 prone I come home with .223 sized round dimples on my face.

  4. And I bet they didn’t have have a live photographer down range for this.

  5. Cool footage, and I agree with JWhite, the casings flying around look awesome.

  6. I have used some of those cameras at work. They’re coming down in price, but still expensive for home entertainment (like about $3000 last time I looked). I swear if they were under a k-buck (price of a good, but not top end pistol) I’d have one.

Think about using it to check for heating or air conditioning leaks. Hot water leaks. All sorts of uses.

    Yeah, that’s the ticket!
