$169 10mm Handgun – Hi-Point Conversion

The gun store guys converted a Hi-Point (likely a .40) to shoot 10mm:

Seems to work damn good.  Can’t really beat it for the price.

I’m sure this modification will catch on in the hood, because 10mm kills mo’ bettah!

They never mentioned if they were doing the conversions in their shop or not, but if you’re interested i’d suggest giving them a call.

I guess they are pretty good gunsmith, but damn! they have to stop posting videos where they are shown shooting. Or edit/cut them a bit. They talk like they are gun experts and “we’ve already seen all what can be done with firearms” and stuff and can’t shoot 10 rounds in the target? Come on.

TheRealDave April 24, 2012 at 02:21 pm

Maybe they are comfortable being “pretty good gunsmiths” and not too worried about your opinions on their marksmanship.

Game programmers are often lousy at games.
Where is the clause that a gunsmith has to be an awesome shootist.
How about a blacksmith. How many swordsmiths were world renowned warriors?

Those who make things are not the best at using them. After all. They spend their time taking the weapon apart and playing with the internals than playing on the range.

Given that Hi-Point pistols explode more frequently than Glocks, I’m not sure I would trust the metallurgy to stand up to 10mm pressures. At the top end, 10mm pushes around 5000psi more than 40S&W. Seems like a cheap, cool toy. Until you go to the ER to have your face sewn back on.

If a Hi-Point can shoot a carriage bolt out of the barrel without exploding, I don’t think a 10mm will be a problem. Look on YouTube for the Hi-Point torture test. I can’t think of another pistol that would survive what they put it through.

Reply

Alan July 27, 2012 at 04:04 pm

Maybe you should check out their other videos. They already did torture tests on a Hi-Point and the only way they could get it to explode would have made ANY firearm explode.

Hi Points are waaaay overbuilt. These same guys tried to destroy one by loading some ridiculously hot loads through one. Some so hot they triggered it by wire remotely. The gun ate everything they threw at it. They only succeeded when they put a bolt in the end of the pistol and fired it. Even then the barrel just bulged if I recall correctly.

40 S&W is rated at 35,000 PSI
10mm is rated at 37,500 PSI
difference is 2,500 PSI
40 S&W 180gr. bullet, 8gr. longshot powder 1159fps, 32,300 PSI
10mm 180gr. bullet, 9.5gr. longshot powder 1287fps, 34,600 PSI the longer case lowers the pressure allowing more powder to be loaded, go with 9 grains instead of 9.5 and pressure is practically the same, not saying its safe but most factory loads do not push the limits except!! for those producing extreme hunting loads
Underwood Ammo, Buffalo Bore, etc.
still not saying its safe but is it more dangerous then mountain climbing? or driving fast? or eating out?

Mike June 28, 2017 at 11:10 am

Bullshit! Hi Point uppers are injected hi temp 3 alloy Zinc, Magnesium, and Copper, blowback upper slide. This is the simplest concept during WW ll machine guns let alone pistols. Hi Points are the safest unmilled, (why you pay out the ying yang for milled pistols).Yes they may seem ugly to some etc. Do the research on ZMC injected die cast alloy and keep an open mind to evidence based reality. Plus dont leave out the fixed barrel as opposed to floating. One must practice shooting fixed barrels. I consistently hit the bullseye at 75 yards with my UNMODIFIED C9. These pistols need broken in, take off slider and clean rails, and then go shoot the shit out of it. You can’t damage these guns and after a safe 30 year record, youd be an idiot to buy anything else. The 9mm +p+ ammo is the most deadliest in existence. Please research before talking out of the bottom end…

There’s been plenty of barrel obstructions survived by hi-points on video. 10mm will never come close to those kinds of pressures. Glocks “blow up” from unsupported chambers. Hi-points don’t blow up from anything short of welding the barrel shut.

Hipoint is HANDS DOWN the best valued gun brand out there…. period. If you think hipoints are junk it means you have never owned or shot one.

Reply

most likely not, those who own and shoot them understand them, its like anything else you use often you learn to use it well, pickup something new and your first impulse is generally to dislike it because its different, different makes dislike far to often, learn to understand something or somebody and dislike either fades or occasionally gets stronger, those of us who learned to like our hi-points usually shoot them more then our (insert brand name here) its understanding these facts of life that can be hard.

Agreed, I own one, used to have 3, i have nothing bad to say about the Hi-Pount line, only thing I guess would be that I wouldn’t carry them, just because they’re so darn heavy, but as a nightstand weapon, its awesome

Why would you they go through all this BS to make an operational 10MM semi-auto that looks that fugly!! Where is the marketability. They should have definitely started with a frame that takes a double stack magazine. If I was the owner of this shop i would be pissed that these guys wasted time on something that would never sell.

To answer Jimk, what they did must have been a new and untested idea they came up with “thus the video to show and share their success at it”. If you had gunsmith skills of that caliber, would you try something that has a chance to destroy a perfectly good firearm on a expensive weapon or a cheaper one? High point is ugly but durable in a overkill kind of way while being very low cost. AIso I seriously doubt they would ever sell a weapon they converted in such a way due to the chance of getting sued if anything went wrong once in the new owners hands. It was a really neat display of their gunsmith talent, as well as something out of the ordinary that I’m sure we ALL wish we could do. Let’s not criticize the few of us who CAN do such a thing or they may stop and that would suck.

Reply

Dave June 16, 2016 at 10:55 am

Its not exactly an untested idea anymore, a number of people have done it, (very successfully I should add) and the guns function just fine, for those of you who think its to much pressure please consider this, if you take 35000 PSI (SAAMI spec on the 40 S&W) X 1.072 you get 37520 PSI (SAAMI spec for the 10MM is 37500 PSI) so you are over pressuring your 40 by 7 percent, most gun company’s pressure test their handguns to way over 7 percent, some go to 60 percent over pressure, very few ammunition company’s and very few re-loaders load up to the maximum limit so pressure really should not be a problem, if you are concerned about pressure see my earlier post about reducing the charge in the 10mm by .5 grain giving it 40 S&W pressures with higher performance, the real advantage with the 10mm is in the longer case which runs lower pressures then a short case, allowing more powder thus more speed for the same pressure, use your calculator and make it safe, safe enjoyment is the bottom line in experimenting is it not?
and yes I do own hi-points, yes I am a re-loader, and yes my conversion gun has over 150 rounds through it and counting, and yes I started out with 28000 PSI loads, nervous? no, careful? yes.

Melon September 8, 2016 at 07:21 am

Dave, you seem to know the pressures well, what’s your option on wild cating a hi point to shoot 400 core bon. Pressures Max at 2900 much easier in a hi point for built for 35000 +p and less pressure and wear than a 10mm conversion

Reply

Dave September 27, 2016 at 11:08 am

Melon, that is another conversion I had considered then put on the back burner for later, I think it would work just fine but rechambering the 40 s&w to 400 cor bon is much more difficult because of the bottle neck design, the 10mm is straight wall like the 40 so all it requires is a .425 reamer and a little patience, pressures with the 400 cor bon should be no problem at all since as you have already noted the highest listing for the 400 is 29000 psi and the 40 s&w is rated at 35000 psi.

Dave December 13, 2016 at 11:34 am

I did the conversion to 400 cor-bon and learned a few things along the way, you need to start with a 45 acp then get a 40 S&W barrel for on it, I started with a 40 S&W so I had to grind the extractor down and ream the bolt face bigger so the larger brass fits, although I didn’t figure this out until after I had the barrel reamed, I also have a slightly sharper shoulder but the reloading die takes care of that, it might work the brass a little more but I’m reloading some for the fourth time and no sign of cracks yet, the lower pressures might be helping that too, to cold to get the chronograph out and I’m still loading a little on the light side anyway, but it looks like it will work okay, 50 rounds through so far, I don’t know if its better then anything else but it is different, (that’s reason enough is it not???)

Reply

Mr. Mike October 24, 2016 at 02:45 pm

I did the conversion back in June, 2016. I’ve fired some pretty warm loads through the thing – and even had one jam the bullet into the brass during the feed cycle, resulting in a smeared, backed-out primer that was punctured. The old Hi Point brick is just fine ! I even went over to the ghost ring sight – and LOVE how this thing works. I also used the recoil spring from the JHP 45, which has kept the bolt in battery a bit longer as well as reducing the beating on the frame. It was a good decision. I have a 69 dollar 10mm pistol…. and it is a FINE old weapon….

Smile !

I’ve been staring at your post for a while thinking I’m missing something, quote (I also used the recoil spring from the JHP 45, which has kept the bolt in battery a bit longer as well as reducing the beating on the frame.) you removed the 40 s&w spring that was meant for 35,000 psi and replaced it with a 45 acp spring meant for 23,000 psi?? putting a weaker spring in holds the slide in place longer and reduces the amount of power the slide hits the frame with?? I don’t quite follow the line of logic there, Confused.

Reply

Tiger October 27, 2020 at 09:37 pm

Force=mass*acceleration. The pressure itself isn’t what determines the spring strength, but the force of the recoil. Roughly ~230gr*900fps=207,000 for 45acp, & 180*1050fps=189,000 for 40cal. So, the 45 would typically have more recoil, and likely have a stronger spring. (This is very general; don’t quote me)

I have a Hi Point C 9 that I bought used. It is kind of ugly compared to more expensive guns. It is heavy. It is hard to take apart and reassemble because of the rear pin that has to be driven out and driven back in place. Some parts will drop or shoot out when doing maintenance and cleaning if you are not cautious. Lining up the hole in the rear stop to insert the pin during reassembly is a real pain. On the plus side: It is accurate with adequate practice. It never jams. it is durable, takes a licking and keeps on ticking. It has a lifetime unlimited warranty. It is heavy enough to beat and render an attacker harmless if you run out of ammo. The price is super low. Yes there are tradeoffs, but there are pluses too. I may buy another one in 45 acp.

Yeah auto correction got me on last post, but the way high points are designed mine shoots 10mm and 40 s&w all day couple hundred rounds no malfunctions runs better and more accurate then my glock 41 10mm conversion from kkm all I did was remove the plastic magazine guide and 10mm rounds fit in the jcp magazine nothing insane has to be done.. just no reason to wanna shoot 10mm when 40 s&w is an option already, might as well go for 500 s&w magnum if you want a hand cannon thing is a concussion device for anyone without hearing protecting only thing it’s good for is maybe watching other ppl shoot your 5$ bullet ammo

I bought a hi point c9 just because it was cheap and I wanted to see what the hate was all about.
Took it to the range
Ran 100 rounds of 9mm through it flawlessly
Went home polished the feed ramp
Bought three 10 round mags and a set of wood grain grips.
Through it in my go bag and never looked back.
It is as accurate as my high end full size sig and more acutely than my .40 shield EDC
I would trust it with my life.
