Shooting Range Next To A School

DERP divided by zero:

Waterbury, CT – parents lashed out over plans to build a gun range just a few hundred feet away from Sprague Elementary School but their protest might not have been enough to stop it.

Full Story – HERE

*eye roll* i’m sure hundreds of kids will die yearly once the range is built.

I love how the people don’t even know what they are mad at… “What are guns made out of? Who Knows? What are guns made out of?” LEAD!  “Metal.. metal… what’s in metal? Lead”  Lead.

ROFL how are the guns themselves going to give their kids lead poisoning?  Damn people are so dumb.

The funniest part is, if you’ve ever been to most gun ranges during the day, it’s a bunch of old guys that sit around and talk more then they shoot anyway.

Thoughts?  Would you be angry if a shooting range was going up next to your kid’s school?  Or would you be happy because then you’d have an excuse to shoot every day before you picked them up?

There is an open shooting range right up behind my old high school in the lil’ suburby town of Issaquah, WA (students are known to steal parking spots on the side of the road going up to the range since high school parking is limited :P ). I always remember hearing rifle cracks and shotgun booms all day everyday when I went there and no one seemed to care :/

Steve069 May 23, 2012 at 12:39 am

How awesome would it be to pick your kid up from school on your day off and stop by the range and blast off a few rounds with him/her before heading home? I’ll take it!

tw1zt May 23, 2012 at 11:54 am

^ +1 exactly! Or how bout get them involved in competition shooting instead of PS3?

AKMSF May 23, 2012 at 12:53 am

“Metal.. metal… what’s in metal? Lead” That woman should not be teaching anyone’s children.

Will May 23, 2012 at 03:29 am

It’s been a while since the teachers were the smartest ones in the community. The prestige is gone, the pay is crap, and you gotta put up with other peoples children all day. Anyone with half a brain chooses a different carreer. That only leaves the idealists. There are some really smart people working as teachers to give back to the community etc, but they’re too smart to be involved in something like this.

So you’re left with Grayhair McNitwit there.

hnl.flyboy May 23, 2012 at 07:11 am

OMG!! METAL HAS LEAD! Ban all the chairs, desks, doors, doorknobs, lockers, …. EVERYTHING that has metal!

Good Lord, they need to relax.

Weer'd Beard May 23, 2012 at 12:04 pm

I wonder what her school is made of?

PURE DERP!

My Gun Club is right in the middle of town. It used to be in the middle of a field with a 1,000 yard range….of course that was 1875.

And of course we have no issues…except for the yuppies who buy property nearby…then try to change things.

Jeff May 23, 2012 at 12:53 am

This is funny, because the range I frequent is right slab dab between a church and an elementary school. No complaints there

Steve May 23, 2012 at 12:54 am

Half the sufferers of hoplophobia lack a penis, the other half are women.

Yeah, name calling is counter-productive, but arguing or trying to reason with these people is like arguing with a tree.

Ted N May 23, 2012 at 03:17 am

“Might as well scream at a rock for a couple of hours, for all the good that it’ll do.” – Chuck Norris, re. these people.

RWC May 23, 2012 at 08:22 am

“Half the sufferers of hoplophobia lack a penis, the other half are women.”

LMAO. Consider that stolen.

Steve May 24, 2012 at 02:20 am

I came up with that a while back. I don’t know if anyone has ever said anything similar.

NikonMikon May 24, 2012 at 05:17 am

Hoplophobia isn’t a real term. Jeff Cooper made it up. Stop using it. You’re making us look bad.

Jim P. May 24, 2012 at 08:00 am

NikonMikon

Have you ever googled Hoplophobia? It may have been made up in 1962, but apparently has come into acceptable usage over the years.

NikonMikon May 24, 2012 at 08:32 am

No I’ve never googled it, I just commented on it without knowing anything about it whatsoever. Oh btw super cool usage of LMGTFY, I bet you’ve been waiting a long time to do that. I remember that feeling too, back in 2008 when I first saw that site.

Mike B. May 28, 2012 at 03:17 pm

Jeff Cooper might have made up the word, but people have been making up words for thousands of years. It’s sort of a trend. And it’s why we’re able to communicate. Or did language simply poof into existence?

Quint Young May 28, 2012 at 09:35 pm

Same with clip vs magazine. If it’s common usage then it takes on the desired meaning.

ENDO-Mike May 28, 2012 at 09:39 pm

Not really. “Clip” has a different actual object associated with it in the realm of firearms (as you know). If I could convince a bunch of people, TV Shows, songs etc.. to start calling a scope a “barrel” it doesn’t mean it’s acceptable.

Quint Young May 28, 2012 at 10:09 pm

But it is, that’s the thing, meanings change. Many words used to mean similar things. A faggot used to be a bundle of wood, but in modern English it’s a homosexual male. Or the term bat (the flying mammal) comes from a word meant to describe a piece of leather that flapped in the breeze.

ENDO-Mike May 28, 2012 at 10:12 pm

You know if both a clip and a magazine didn’t hold ammunition i’d be on your side. Since they do, i’m not chalking it up to “language evolving”.

Mike B. May 29, 2012 at 11:30 am

If you want to see it, here’s a link to a video explaining the differences between clips and magazines: https://www.everydaynodaysoff.com/2009/10/24/difference-between-a-magazine-and-a-clip/. The meanings of these words haven’t changed, ‘clip’ has simply slipped into incorrect use as slang for ‘magazine’.

The Las Vegas Gun Store has a day care center just next door to it. Nobody seems to mind.

AZ May 23, 2012 at 01:19 am

thats funny as hell. My highschool had (and still does) have a shooting team AND range! lol

Quint Young May 23, 2012 at 02:00 pm

My highschool had a rifelry team too.
And we’re in the city.

This is why I don’t like people. How can people be so stupid? I mean… Just… HOW?
I suppose Heinlein was right about the power of human stupidity.

hougie May 23, 2012 at 01:58 am

what are the odds that there is more dangerous levels of lead in that school then there would ever be released released as a cause of the gun range?

MrColionNoir May 23, 2012 at 02:06 am

I doubt they would be singing the same song if an active shooter was reported at the school and someone from the range came over with his metal lead poison dispensing mechanism of doom.

I bet they wouldn’t have anything against a police station built right next to their school. Police carry friendly, non-toxic firearms…

I was there, as part of the counter protest. The linked news story is probably the worst of the 4 TV news and 2 newspapers there covering the story. Here is one of the more balanced ones: http://www.wtnh.com/dpp/news/new_haven_cty/parents-speak-out-over-proposed-gun-range

It’s funny, in a sad sort of way. This has been dragging on for a year now. Originally they protested that they were afraid stray bullets from the range might hit the school. When it was pointed out back then that the range would be underground, with bulletproof walls and ceiling, and in the back of the industrial complex, they changed to the lead story. Then it was pointed out to many of them that the range would be regulated and tested regularly by the federal government, with a state of the art ventilation system, and the air coming out of the range would actually be cleaner then the outside air. Then the message changed to “well, it sends the wrong message to our kids”. So I pointed out the range isn’t visible from the school property, there are trees, 2 fences and a river between them. If the kids DID happen to go back there, there would still be nothing to see except a door, and they would not be allowed inside that door without a parent. I pointed out there is currently a pawn shop right next to the school on the other side, with a huge sign visible from the playground. There is a head shop also next to the school. There is a strip club and a bar right down the street that the kids pass every day, and the park across the street is a known hangout for drug dealers. There used to be a massage parlor nearby, but it finally got shut down. I asked “Don’t all those things send a worse message to the kids? Why didn’t any of you protest those things” Then is became “we don’t want no guns here”. One woman actually said to a friend of mine “The school was here first, we have a right to decide what we want next door.” To which he responded “Well, if you want to use that argument, my rights were here long before the school was”. It’s also worth pointing out that none of the organizers of the protest actually have and children in the school, and I’m pretty sure they don’t even live in that city. The range was already approved by zoning a year ago, and the Board of Ed is fighting to stop it. So a cash strapped Board of Ed that was already complaining it doesnt have enough money to fund the schools is wasting thousands upon thousands of dollars fighting against their own city which has to spend thousands more to defend their decision to approve the range. If the city backs down, it will have to spend even more money to defend against the range, and in the end they will loose because there is no legal reason to prohibit the range from being there. All money that SHOULD be going to the school to educate the children.

Bilbo May 23, 2012 at 06:07 am

^^ Bravo

DB327 May 23, 2012 at 10:46 am

Thank you for counter-protesting this rampant imbecility.

Johnnie F. May 23, 2012 at 07:07 pm

Just to clarify one thing, the Board of Education and the city aren’t paying for jack shit. The taxpayers are.

sirkut May 23, 2012 at 06:52 am

We had a gun store/range open up across the street from the university. Loads of people bitched and moan including the student board from the university. Over 2 years later not one shooting (except for an ND that injured an employee) and the store/range is doing just fine.

NateDogg May 23, 2012 at 07:19 am

All I can say is, if your getting exposure to lead Via a fired bullet, You really should be thinking about the F-ing fact that you’ve got a hole in your body that said bullet just ripped though.

Also, I would think, Most ammo fired in a gun range would have a copper jacket on it, the lead poisoning story is moot.

These morons just need to man it up and grow a pair….. or two…..

NikonMikon May 24, 2012 at 05:21 am

Copper gilded projectiles do not fully encase the core of most all projectiles. Usually the entire base of the bullet is open and the lead core is exposed. This base is what encounters the burning gasses.

Jeep May 23, 2012 at 07:21 am

OOOH MY GOD, don’t you guys understand !! LEAD !! Let’s drive as far as possible from this place. Yes! Drive! With our cars! And what’s in our cars ? Batteries! And what’s in batteries? LEAD !!!
Damn we’re all doomed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with all the above comments, this fight is just silly, and useless. Why not taking advantage of this to take the kids to the range, show them why a weapon CAN BE dangerous, how it CAN BE safe, and maybe take it as an example for a lesson on the American constitution… 2hours outside school, and you don’t even have to pay for transportation, it is just next door !!

Well, maybe I’m just screaming at rocks… (great Chuck Norris quote by the way !)

Toll Brothers are building some McMansions about 100 feet away from my local range, and as I understand it, attempting to pre-sell the homes, even in this tough real estate market. It either means that they didn’t do any due diligence, don’t care about it either way, or perhaps they assume they have the money and legal muscle to shut us down, which I sure hope doesn’t happen.

Lumpy May 23, 2012 at 08:06 am

Chicago has a Federal gun range in its midst on the 17th floor of a highrise and the City hasn’t blown up. Of course the city’s still fighting civilian firing ranges in its midst….

“For example, Action Target was approached by the Federal Reserve Bank to design and build a shooting range on the 17th floor of a major office building in Chicago, Illinois. When considering the noise, ventilation, and other items associated with a range, constructing a range in a skyscraper surrounded by offices was a challenge, but not an impossible task for Action Target. Through careful planning and execution, we created a .50 BMG rated shooting range complete with three lanes, stalls, and retrievers.”

Wow. Ms. Lessard sure isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Running just the first page through a Flesch Kincaid readability program rates it at a 9th grade level.

When I was in 9th grade, I would have considered that an insult. I couldn’t read it all. “We the tax payer’s” … the tax payer’s what? “ENOUFF” … really?

spencer wade May 23, 2012 at 09:41 am

funny. I got a good laugh out of watching the women from the screen shot with DERP shades, walking around early in the video. NICE DRESS. and whoever said a teacher is not a good career is a dipshit. summers off and you can retire at 55 with 75 plus percent of you pay every year till you die. yea thats a bad gig. and if you get into school admin? your making bank even at a small school.

RWC May 23, 2012 at 09:49 am

Thankfully she isn’t a teacher. Just a community activist.

Jeremy C May 23, 2012 at 10:03 am

Well, we had a gun range and a chapel in my school along with an armory full of SA80’s and LSW and a GPMG. Nobody was shot at my school, not one person went on a rampage. This was in the UK where “guns are outlawed”. Imagine that.

DB327 May 23, 2012 at 10:40 am

Methinks the people of Waterbury, CT need to be more concerned with what’s being taught in their schools and not so much the Evil Death Machine Kill Factory of Doom that’s going to be built over yonder. Listening to some of the people complain and reading the linked PDF (I get it, she’s not a product of their education system) made me wonder just how good their collective grasp on the English language truly is.

I really think the high school physics teacher needs to weigh in on the idea of an errant bullet finding its way into the school from that range. Then maybe the chemistry or physical science teacher can speak to lead poisoning. Then after that’s said and done, the local priest can explain what kind of an act of God it would require for any harm to come to those children by way of that gun range.

This is just more of the typical fear-mongering being spewed by people with no concept of the Second Amendment, firearms’ utility in society, or common logic for that matter. Someone should have brought a table and two chairs to that protest, then sat down representative parties to talk like civilized humans. I’m not sure which is worse: this or the article about the “bullet button” legislation in California.

Jeep May 23, 2012 at 10:40 am

I just read the .pdf RWC brought to our attention. It’s kind of funny, because although English is not my mother’s tongue, I get 99% of what is going on, on MANY blogs, websites, books (OK I had to google “DERP” the first time I saw it… :-) ).

I CAN’T FIGURE OUT WHAT THE F**K SHE IS TALKING ABOUT. Not one sentence makes sense.

I give her a D- for this crap. No contruction, poor use of punctuation and absolutely no sense. And she can consider herself happy with this!

Jim P. May 23, 2012 at 11:11 pm

Jeep,

Don’t sweat it. Those of us who speak the local American English are having trouble digesting her blathering. she’s just incoherent.

dave w May 23, 2012 at 10:41 am

omg, that is unbelievable. Maybe if the store only sold glocks it would be better, plastic isnt as toxic as lead.

ocelot May 23, 2012 at 11:28 am

I would be happy since schools are gun free zone after im done shooting i can just leave my gun at the range pick up my kid then go get my gun or just leave it at the vault. simple.

(ranges over here offer the service of storing your guns if your a member)

Hell here in Canada my high school and our “tobacco-use only smoke pit” was right beside an open air rifle range separated by a 30ft grass berm and no one, in the history of the entire school has ever been injured or killed. Talk about knee-jerk reaction.
