Ben Stein Says Strict Gun Control Doesn’t Work

Glad to have Ben on our side:

Win Ben Stein’s Money!  Nah… not this time, but he does seem to be right on the money with his views as far as i’m concerned.

“When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.”  Such a great line.

Thoughts?

    I’m glad he gets it.

  5. Wow, I think we also need to know who Ben is and where he comes from. He’s a former Nixon staffer. He’s from the Old Guard of Republicans who supported GCA 68, The Brady Bill, and the Assault Weapons ban, and who fought AGAINST liberalizing concealed carry laws. I don’t know Ben’s history personally, but he represents a group that typically WOULD be in favor of gun control.

The fact that he’s taking this logical stand is a HUGE deal.

I haven’t been following him extremely closely, but it seems ol’ Ben has come a long way in the last decade.

    2. Yeah he’s a neocon. They get it right about 40% of the time, but as you mentioned it’s good to see a gun-grab collaborator adjust fire in the right direction for once.

  6. A family friend has a holiday dinner with him and Wolf Blitzer every year. Would love to be a fly on the wall for that :-)

I was just talking with him after lunch the other day with my girlfriend, Morgan Fairchild.
      Yeah. That’s the ticket!

  7. Eh, it is nice to hear anyone with a platform make a reasoned argument about this topic, but Stein’s politics are pretty embarassing. He’s part of that far-right crew that thinks evolution is a lie perpetrated by LIBERAL SCIENTISTS and the type of person that compares everything to the Holocaust. Plus he changes his opinions at the drop of a hat. For instance, he came out a long time back to support Warren Buffet’s idea that the wealthy are not getting taxed enough. But when it was politically better to be vocal against it, he made some comment about not owning slaves.

Here it is: Stein stated he was being punished, saying: “But for what? I don’t own slaves. I employ a lot of people full- and part-time and they are all happy with their pay. When charity calls, I almost always write out a check. I don’t have a yacht or ponies or a plane. My wife doesn’t wear a tiara. I don’t gamble.”

Guys like Stein are always going to say things you agree and disagree with because that is their job. Political wonks don’t have to reason a decision or think about it. They just decide what is best politically and go with it. Stein is the king of that, so I’m out. Check out the wiki page on his movie to get an idea. Just creepy stuff.

  8. Having Ben on your side is like Jenny McCarthy helping. He may have a cogent thought here, but he thinks Jesus and Dinosaurs walked the earth at the same time and the planet it 6000 years old.

Plus his past actions put him at odds with his current statements. Not saying he can’t learn, everyone can, some choose not too. Just when the rubber hit the road and he as involved, he opted to restrict not free.

This. …and the above comment by OH COME ON.

Jenny McCarthy is probably worse than Ben Stein though. After a ton of studies finding no connection between vaccinations and Autism she’s still encouraging people to avoid immunization, ultimately leading to mass illness in children.

Even so Ben Stein is one of the most knowledgeable people on Earth and somehow completely retarded to the fact of evolution. Here’s an awesome quote of his: “…Love of God and compassion and empathy leads you to a very glorious place, and science leads you to killing people.”

Here’s one example of what science really does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poliomyelitis

    2. So let me get this straight….anyone who holds to superstitious views must be summarily dismissed from all conversations? Were this a discussion of earth origins your smirking atheism would be perfectly appropriate, but in this discussion it just makes you look like an intolerant ideologue, who insists on dragging her pet agenda into inappropriate places. Here’s hoping a homeless man shits in his sock and throws it at you, so that you may sample the same poo juice you have been spewing.

More Wikipedia, less thesaurus. Your first sentence is a great example of a straw man argument, followed by an imaginative ad hominem attack.

Your “smirking atheism” assumption speaks volumes. The world must be divided into two camps: those who believe the Earth is 6000 years old and Jesus rode dinosaurs, and atheists. I struggle to imagine which of the two you consider yourself.

If anything, this is the perfect place to point out that celebrities are a horrible group to idealize, especially with regard to political views. Jenny McCarthy is a shining testament to that notion.

Echoing Tom: From a tactical point of view, if Stein’s gun control views are to be lumped together with his fundie beliefs by voters, I’d rather he not be on the team.

Is a elmer fudd, bumper sticker quote which makes us look like idiots, why not just say “I DONT DIAL 911 .. . .”

  10. I wonder what the JPFO says about this piece.

People like this always confuse me.
One some issues (gun control) one person (Ben Stein) can give very rational and sensible arguments, and then when the topic is switched (science) the same person immediately loses all ability to use logic.

Second sentence: “on” instead of “one.”

  13. Mike,

Thank you for posting this. It proves that my Sunday morning Irish coffee didn’t have me that messed up. ;-)

I saw this “live” when it was broadcast. I did want to yell that he ignored the FRC leftist attack, but this could have been in the bag for most of the week. I will grant that he seems to get it. Hopefully he doesn’t change his mind.
