Gun Crazy USA

VICE goes to Florida and takes a look:

4:45 – So Walmart gets freaked out when they tried to buy a measly 2000 rounds?  Yea I doubt that.  They probably just didn’t like the cameras.

14:16 – “You couldn’t shoot an AR with both eyes open.” <– uhhh… no.  And this guy was a Marine?  He’s only 32 years old, so I’m sure he had an ACOG.

VICE-LogoThe documentary really doesn’t contain anything groundbreaking you don’t already know.  One of the major themes in it is villainizing private gun sales, which kind of pissed me off.

Thoughts?

  1. Combat Engineer, not an infantryman. Don’t know how it is in the USMC but REMFs typically get the new hotness for rifle-use after the infantry.
It always makes me smile when people equate “any military service” to “knows anything about guns”. It’s a bit like equating “worked at a hospital” with “is a surgeon”.

    1. Oh lawd, infantrymen and their superiority complex. You forgot to call him a POG, while you were at it.

      1. …and everyone not combat arms and being butt-hurt about not being a killer.
Just kidding, brah. All on the same team and all that. Some people like the infantry-thing, some don’t, it’s cool. I was just offering an explanaition to the somewhat contrafactual “…you can’t shoot an AR like that [with two eyes open].”

Seriously man, I’ve spent time with armour, supply and my alma mater (infantry). It’s all good.

    2. At 7:05 the marine says he bought a couple boxes of “.410 handgun”

      1. At 25:27 the marine is standing in front of a US flag which has been defaced by a bunch of his fellow service members. These assholes where wearing a shirt which said “I’d take a bullet for the flag” but they dont know the basics when it comes to respecting or disposing of one, just a bunch of poser welfare queens who joined up for the benefits and so they could pretend they are bad ass.

  2. Well I used to live in that area, and Wal-mart never flinched when I bought their entire stock of 9mm before going to a training class or major match. In fact they would call around if they didn’t have enough stock of CCI Blazer at that particular store (WWB didn’t work with my competition guns due to reduce power springs).

Granted the last time I tried it was pre-Obama when ammo supplies were plentiful, so they knew that their stock of WWB 9mm would last a week or so until they got restocked with CCI 9mm.

The Doc was very week. Nothing news.

  4. Nice Lew, however, every Marine is a Marksman first. However the analogy of the hospital and the entire military is quite accurate. / Can’t shoot an AR w/ both eyes open? I shoot pistol and AR w/ both eyes open. Everytime

    1. If you cant hit your target without looking you are not operator enough.

    2. If the marine qualified before 2005, they qualified on the 500m known distance range, correct? I always thought that was much easier than the Army’s 300m pop-up qualification and don’t understand why the Corps is always bragging about the 500m qual. It’s fucking known distances, and you’ve got all fucking day.

After 2005 I think they revamped the qualification, but I don’t know if it’s still known distances with no time limit. I hope it’s not.

      1. You do realize that the Reason for the Quals is the teach shooting fundamentals. Doing unknown ranges, with pop up targets is not an effective way to teach people how to shoot. The Marine Corps does utilize a similar unknown distance range for Pre Deployment, among other tables of fire. The whole principle of the Quals is dimenostrating marksmenship fundamentals. If you can’t fire a rifle effectively under “ideal” conditions, there is no way you can be effective on other course of fire. Also, the 500m is timed.

Vice usually does a pretty good job — their travel series is particularly good — but this was not their best work. He really, really does not like private sales. And the guy who got his AR-15 at a garage sale, for half price? That guy must be the luckiest dude on the planet. I’ve never seen an AR-15 at a garage sale, and I’ve lived in Florida my entire life.

  6. Vice invariably does a terrible job

  7. Weaksauce…to be expected from vice.

Oh hey! They came to my town! Kinda crazy to see a video like this and know every location.

  9. Only 50% of the worlds guns? We must be slacking.

    1. Awe shit, thats where all the RFBs or KSGs are, they’ve just been misplaced and are on a ammo shelf, there are 2 right there! Look at the bottom of time code 2:57.

      1. Once again the 12 year old photos of Treyvon Martin, saying he was unarmed, but neglecting to mention he was bashing GZ’s head in to a curb.

    2. I’d gladly let them move to Darfur or Mogadishu and decide to say they don’t want to have a gun.

At the 20:45’ish mark the map of the US…I didn’t know there were two Montanas, and had know idea that I was living in one of them. Always thought I lived in Michigan.

So, just so I’ve got this straight are we all just ignoring Matt here because his comment is laughably retarded, or did nobody but me see it yet? Maybe I should get the ball rolling.

    1. A U.S. flag. — His U.S. flag. Google will help you with the Supreme Court’s ruling.
    2. Defaced. — Signed.
    3. Only one “asshole” a.k.a. veteran of a foreign war was wearing that t-shirt.
    4. “I’d take a bullet for the flag.” — “I’d take a bullet for her.”
    5. I’m pretty sure basic training in every branch of the military covers treatment of the flag.
    6. Poser welfare queens. — Just go ahead and e-mail those guys your home address and I’m sure they will be more than willing to make the trip to have a civil skull fucking that will more than likely alter your frame of reference and opinion.

Lemme know if I helped Matt out enough here guys.

    1. 1- The SCOTUS has ruled burning a flag is protected speech due to its symbolism, writing your name on it is not
      2- Defaced none the less
3- Yes, a asshole was wearing that shirt
4-” her” was in reference to the flag
5- Apparently not because this guy defaced his flag
6- I sent it to James Yeager and he refused to send me the tickets, I’m sure these guys wouldnt do shit either. And even if they did, it would do nothing more than prove those welfare queens are more than willing to violently oppress their fellow countrymen for nothing more than exercising their 1A rights.

  12. In general I love Vice. It’s journalism without boundaries. And Shane Smith (not shown in the above story) is hands down one of the baddest motherfuckers since John Brown. The stories they do, the access they get, the style they approach most of their stories with is unmatched in the media world.

But they lean left. They always have. Sometimes I do too. I don’t fault them for it. You just have to approach their stuff with a critical eye to look for the untruths hidden in the facts.

After watching this, I disagree with the message of the story. But I don’t write off Vice as a useless leftist publication. Most of their other stuff is insanely good.
