Tactical Trash Pickup Loadout For The Suburbs

Charlotte, NC home of armed trash pickup by 19 year old operator John Schultz:

Full Story – WCNC

Rifle, bulletproof vest, extra magazines, zip ties, desert camouflage pants, and a knife.  Those look like fairly nice houses in the background… mean streets of the suburbs though require such a tactical loadout for trash pickup no doubt. Someone better not spit gum on the sidewalk within this guy’s field of view or they might get a rifle shoved in their face.

Alright, what’s this guys ARFCOM or /k/ username? Does he read ENDO?

Tactical-Trash-Pickup-LoadoutSeems unnecessary but if he’s within the law doing it then good for him I guess? I can’t help but think that this kid is going to get himself into some shit sometime when someone decides to punk him by taunting him to use his rifle, or else sneaking up on him from behind and taking it from him just to prove a point.  I’m just throwing a couple scenarios out there which I doubt he’s prepared for…

Thoughts?

Since when has a mass shooter in the past 20 years used a bolt-action rifle of any type?

      1. Besides that, the guy is decked out in body armor, armed with a knife and carrying around several AR-15 magazines.

If I saw this guy walking around my neighborhood I wouldn’t think “there goes a concerned citizen exercising his 2nd Amendment rights” I would think “OH SHIT WE GOT AN AURORA COLORADO COPYCAT OVER HERE!”

        1. Poppy have you even bought a firearm yet? Or are you like the black lady in the video where no one other than the police and military should carry openly?

For you to think like you would “Aurora Colorado” just shows how indoctrinated you are by the MSM.

          1. BUT HE’S DRESSED LIKE A MASS SHOOTER

Let me put this another way, if I put a picture of this guy next to picture of a famous mass shooter, and you knew nothing about either one, and I told you to pick which one was a mass shooter and which one wasn’t, could you? Probably not.

We aren’t talking about a guy OCing with a rifle slung over his shoulder or a guy with a holster visibly on his hip. I’m fine with both of those things. We’re talking about a dude who’s dressed exactly like someone who’s about to murder a metric fuckton of people. So if I saw him walking down the street and towards my house, knowing what I know about mass shooters, I’d probably call the cops or grab my shotgun. Which I own.

            1. Grab your shotgun* ?
              Knowing what you know?
What a joke. You know jack about mass shooters? Most mass shooters have been introverts. If you trust MSM, Newtown, VT, etc those guys were “shy” antisocial people.

I AM talking about a guy who is OC’ing. You’re talking about a guy who you can’t prove is a mass shooter, and because he looks like a mass shooter he might as well be one. That’s like saying penis owners are rapists.

Schultz seems like an extrovert hell-bent on removing garbage and taking personal responsibility for himself.

How many active shooters wear bulletproof vests? SHOW ME the data. Seriously. Can you cite at least 3 examples?

Who are you to decide what he carries or what he wears and when? This isn’t Saudi Arabia. I suppose in your mind women belong in the kitchen?

*Did you buy that shotgun or was it a gift? Don’t tell me your financial aid was spent on beer and BF4 pre-order.

On a lighter note, if you’re still studying in engineering, leave the social sciences for those with the JDs, MAs & BAs.

On an even lighter note. If you find yourself down in my state. I’ll buy you a pitcher of beer so we can bitch about this shit in person.

  6. What’s his rifle brand/model anyway?

It doesn’t seem like a US issued rifle from this period, nor a German one.
    Can anyone help?

    1. And why is he carrying what appear to be Ar-15 magazines when he’s toting a bolt-action rifle!?

      1. I noticed that as well… they are definitely AR-15 magazines.. Like I said. Way, way, way too many video games.

        1. I’m not so sure…those definitely look way too big to be 5.56 to me

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=GSBE0-z1i2o#t=50s

they look too short to be 30-06 to me. I also dunno if he just unloaded it for the news crew, but if he carries it around unloaded, what’s the point? maybe i’m just missing it, or maybe he’s just doing it for the sake of doing it…

His Lee Enfield could be one of the later 7.62×51 DMR rifles the UK produced before they went full FAL.

          2. The cartridges looked rimed to me, and the action looks like a lee enfield so I’m guessing its .303. still too many video games. needs something belt fed at the bare minimum.

      2. Long Range Avatar
        Long Range

The magazines in the pouch under his arm (0:49) certainly appear to be AR mags. But the loaded mag that they show (0:50) is definitely a Lee Enfield mag… I recognize those lips ANYWHERE…

    2. The rifle appears to be a sporterized M1917 Enfield.
It should be a .30-06, so I have no idea why he carries AR mags, maybe he’s just a little….slow

      1. Its a sporterized Enfield. The buttstock socket is the giveaway.
I’ll agree though that those two mags they show are AR-15 mags, but then the cartridges they show look like .303 british.
This kid seems more than a little confused…

        1. Maybe the chest rig doubles for his AR as well? Maybe he only takes his bolt gun on walks because he knows his AR is a hot subject right now and would bring even more unnecessary attention. I applaud the kid for to be of service to his community, but if I was a bad guy looking to do harm in his cul de sac, I would be trying to take out the 19 year old kid with a 30-06 bolt gun and body armor first. Hasn’t this kid hear of the, “grey man” theory? (Partial Troll)

The weapon itself can be a good deterrent. Do you really think your average crook is out to be an active shooter?

      2. He probably left his AR-15 at home and brought the enfield so he didn’t get a swat team called on himself.

  8. OK, thanks for the confirmation of the M1917 tip, this is what I thought from the front sight (quite specific), but I really wasn’t sure…
What kind of guy got a M1917 issued during ww2. I knew about some M1903 for grenade launching, sniper, reliability of bolt action over clip-fed, but M1917?

    1. “At the time of the American entry in to World War II, the U.S. Army was still issuing the M1917 to Chemical Mortarmen. Perhaps due to M1 Garand shortages at the start of the war, the M1917 was also issued to artillerymen early in the war and both mortarmen and artillerymen carried the M1917 in North Africa. Lieutenant Colonel Charles E. Peterson (USAR, retired; 1920–2005), a Major in the 101st Airborne in the Normandy action, reported seeing some M1917 rifles issued to rear-echelon US troops in France during World War II. Other M1917 rifles were issued to the Philippine Commonwealth Army and Philippine Constabulary. After the fall of the Philippines, M1917 rifles were used by Japanese police forces as well as by U.S. and Filipino soldiers with the local guerrillas before the liberation of the Philippines.

Before and during World War II, stored rifles were reconditioned for use as reserve, training and Lend-Lease weapons; these rifles are identified by having refinished metal (sandblasted and Parkerized) and sometimes replacement wood (often birch). Many were bought by the United Kingdom through the British Purchasing Commission for use by the Home Guard; 615,000 arrived in Britain in the summer of 1940, followed by a further 119,000 in 1941.[8] These were prominently marked with a red paint stripe around the stock to avoid confusion with the earlier P14 that used the British .303 round. Others were supplied to the Nationalist Chinese forces, to indigenous forces in the China-Burma-India theatre, to Filipino soldiers under the Philippine Army and Constabulary units and the local guerrilla forces and to the Free French Army, which can occasionally be seen in wartime photographs. The M1917 was also issued to the Local Defence Force of the Irish Army during World War II, these were part-time soldiers akin to the British Home Guard. In an ironic reversal of names, in Irish service the M1917 was often referred to as the “Springfield”; presumably since an “Enfield” rifle was assumed to be the standard Irish MkIII Short Magazine Lee-Enfield, while “Springfield” was known to be an American military arsenal.

The M1917 was supplied to both Denmark and Norway after WW2 as an interim weapon prior to the arrival of the M1 Garand.”

I hate these guys… These are the idiots who give us a bad name and get the politicians in the mood to start passing anti-open carry laws.

And I know I know before anyone jumps on my back… It’s his right and he’s not breaking the law and we should support him no matter how stupid we think he is… Blah blah blah…

Is something keeping this kid out of the military? He’s 19, and clearly desires to walk around wearing camo and toting a rifle and body armor… Seriously body armor?

And what’s with the zipties, ancient bolt action rifle, and what look to be AR mags? What a combo… This kid is messed up in the head, a perfect candidate for the Marines ;) Let’s ship him off before he gets in trouble.

He certainly has “Marine” written all over him. Time to get his head stuck in a jar.

  11. If he had a Mosin it would make more sense, he could use the bayo to stab the trash, and he wouldn’t have to leave his front porch.

  12. this kid is an idiot, without doubt…but that lady they interviewed is what I’d expect to pop out if Nicki Minaj and 2 chainz had 2 kids…and the brother and sister, through 10 generations of Merovingian-level incest, ended up with lots of little Nicki-Chainzes running around. Then, they put them in a Hunger Games-esque battle royale, and she was the winner getting free Papa John’s fo’ life, yo.

YIKES! Damn, that lady is painfully dumb. Not to take anything away from the kid, who is also likely 10 generations inbred.

  13. I say good for Schultz. He’s picking up trash, walking around, and following the laws of his state. The pussification of people is getting worse and more visible daily.

If you don’t like open carry move to North Korea, or stop whining.

It’s angry comments on here and excessive bullying towards awkward/shy/against the grain type of people that get guys like Schultz to either,
    A) refuse to trust anyone (therefore taking extreme and legal measures. or
    B) Save all that angry energy and either commit suicide or start killing people.

I think Schultz needs a mentor.
Clearly he is willing to communicate with the news crew, and has even opened his hands for dialog by waving towards irritated neighbors.

Why aren’t you guys bitching about that black lady? Clearly she has raised her kids to think anyone who owns or carries a firearm (outside of police and military) is a baaad person. “My children are afraid to go outside (when they see a gun).” <WTF?! I don't see hammers and fear for my bunghole thinking I'm about to get raped.

I bet some of the nervous "neighbors" think his rifle is full-auto and can hold 50 round magazines.

    1. While I don’t really disagree with anything you’re saying, as I said in an above post, I just don’t get why he’s doing this.

If he wants to make an OC statement, go in an OC rally, or actually be informative to your neighbors. Take the rifle off your back and talk to them. Doing this in your neighborhood (and getting coverage on your local news) is kind of pissing on a fire. Kinda small audience, no? Ironically, I say that while watching this video on the internet, the widest audience of all…but I digress…
If you want to help your neighborhood out with a neighborhood watch, be more proactive in getting your community together and forming one. If it’s about Cawadoody…well…

Legal =/= smart. Discretion is key.

      1. Thanks for replying Chris.

I have some points in his defense: it’s possible he’s carrying his loaded AR mags, knife and body armor to get used to carrying that kind of weight (even though it’s not much).

Maybe he can’t afford more mags, pouches, or ammo. Also he doesn’t seem to have a loaded rifle.
Maybe his state laws, or city prohibits loaded carry without a CHL/CHP.

I would also say that the regardless of intelligence, if the law is on his side (so far).

I agree discretion is best. If he had fliers that would be nice. If I recall correctly the video seemed to say “some” neighbors, and not “all” neighbors.

Denever Chris, I do agree that he should (not needs) to have some sort of plan on raising awareness, and ideally someone who can mentor him into doing things in a pleasant manner. And yet, I don’t believe anyone should force Schultz to do things the “PC” way. He looks like a Mac owner anyhow.

If Schultz refuses to be politically correct, so be it.
That’s the purpose of the first amendment (in spirit at least).

Let’s hope someone who knows Schultz reads ENDO, and finds him a mentor.
I’m sure if firearms were totally mainstream and everyone open carried (OC) then Schultz would probably not even bother with “patrolling”.

          2. @ Mike, you also can’t have manslaughter without “laughter”.

The rifle is a no4 Enfield, you can tell by the front sight and fluted upper handguard, he is walking around with the mag out tucked in the front if his pc. This guy. Fuck’s sake. He makes young legally OCers in NC look bad. I OC a handgun on a regular basis, and he could too if he took his head out of his CoD stuffed ass. He can do it loaded and all. If he wants plates/soft armor? Low profile armor carrier. He needs to use his brain.

    1. Maybe he saw the police reaction in Boston and wants to be a little more proactive?

      1. Monkeysuit Avatar
        Monkeysuit

Being proactive without much discretion is asking for trouble. I don’t mind at all that he wants to be proactive, in fact I salute him for it. However, he could do simple things that would limit the amount of alarm. Even simple things like changing the rifle for a pistol, and just wearing jeans instead of DCUs would eliminate some of the Rambo, and make him a little more sheep friendly. If folks are so afraid of you that they don’t want to be near you, how do you expect to educate them?

        1. Some folks. Not all.
The news crew had no problem interviewing him.

What trouble has he received from all this?
The police claim what he’s doing is legal.
Only his neighbor, and “some people” (the news article claims), are considering his actions worrisome/trouble.

          Concerned can’t do anything legally.
Why? Because there is no problem and no trouble legally.

Sure, we can all call him a moron and other names, but all his neighbors and keyboard warriors aren’t picking up the trash in his neighborhood. Maybe this should be a lesson.

Pick up your trash or 19 year olds without cable tv – or banned from XBOX live – will do it, while armed.

  23. Imagine this kid and the other awkwardly looking kid from Newtown hanging out. If you can imagine them not getting along and not having many, many things in common, how then can anyone suggest he’s not off his rocker and likely a candidate to be ‘adjudicated mentally defective.’ Look at the quality of his judgment, not his rights. He obviously is attention starved like themajority of active shooters who blast away at innocents before turning the gun on themselves as the cops show up.

None of us can judge how mentally jacked he is from that short clip, though we’re definitely on the right track to our PhDs after it.

    1. Your mentality seemingly appears to be no different than those who believe physicians and healthcare professionals should be the deciding factor as to whether or not you should own a firearm.
If this is what you’re saying, please IMMEDIATELY immigrate out of the country.

Why? Because physicians shouldn’t decide who has access to civil liberties or rights under the constitution. A judge who makes a verdict on a person thereby making said person a ward of a state (or a person is a convicted felon) is an acceptable format for revoking civil liberties.

For you to group Schultz in with active shooters, just because you believe he is attention starved is no different than saying because Michelle Obama frequently tries to get attention she must also be in the same league as active shooters. That’s what you’re saying right?

      Let me rephrase.
I’m trying to understand your viewpoint. It appears that “anyone who is attention starved equals active shooter”, is what you’re trying to say?

Ask yourself this: Why didn’t the new crew interview someone in support of Schultz?
Why did they focus on the firearm?
Why aren’t they focusing on the crime statistics of that area?
You did hear/read the part about people thanking him?

Go read the news article’s comment section.

      1. Immigrate essentially means to enter; I think the word you are looking for is emigrate, which basically means to leave, as in “please immediately emigrate out of the country.”

The right to free speech is also a civil liberty, as defined by the U.S. constitution. Defending one civil liberty, while grossly neglecting another, is no way to act. Furthermore, at times, cognitive dissonance is necessary to push a conversation forward, so though you may disagree with another, having an inclusive attitude is something that I see is characteristic of the American spirit.

I respect your ability to disagree, but what I do not appreciate is your immediate call for emigration (which is what I assume you meant) as soon as someone offers a dissenting opinion. Conflictual dialogue is nothing to be afraid of. If someone else’s ideas challenge your world view so fundamentally, consider the merits of their argument, and if you ultimately conclude that they are wrong, you will just reinforce your own convictions.

So basically, calm down a bit, you may learn something.

        1. Yes. I probably should have said, “GTFO” instead. Or actually, “Move to California”.

The issue we’re facing with firearms, gun control and civil rights is that some people want to dictate policies based on how they feel, or rare uncommon “mass” shootings.

NDAA, Patriot Act, SOPA, CISPA, etc Take your pick, the government is trying to pass laws or already has based on fear mongering.

Yes, this is America, we can disagree. But when disagreeing scares some people into pushing laws being changed, therefore eroding civil/natural rights, I’m an unhappy camper. :)

jpcmt – He seems to me to be a polite kid who knows what he’s doing and is doing it for the right reasons, although the method is poor. He’s a bit socially awkward, yes (at least from the edited clips the media gives us). But, that does not make him insane – only different. I applaud him for what he’s doing – applying his right to bear arms there (although effectiveness and necessity are debatable) no different than you are applying your right to free speech here (effectiveness and necessity certainly negligible at best), and attempting to inspire action.

  24. As a Vet I support him 100%.

  25. It surprises me… oh wait it doesn’t… how many of the comments here come from such blatant cowards. You’re supposed to be 2nd Amendment supports and Americans. Act like it.

    1. dis fuckin’ guy…

Yeah, I’m a coward (?) because I think a kid whom is wearing body armor and carrying an antiquated rifle (to pick up trash) is an idiot. I’m automatically against 2A rights just because I think this guy is a tool?

Get fuckin’ real. Thought your trolling was done, hadn’t seen you in ages.

  26. I think that ladies kids just saw a white guy with a gun and thought they were going to have to work if he saw them outside. They so raysist!

  27. if he really supported the second amendment, he would carry it loaded, and not just a steel, wood, and web slinged baseball bat.

any of you tried to load an enfield before? not exactly a muzzleloader, but not AR-15 easy either. the detachable box mag was not made for magpul tactical reloads either, it was for cleaning convenience. you still loaded them by stripper clips.

meh. just because you can do something, doesnt mean that you should.

  28. As the owner of a penis, I somehow manage to wear pants in public (most of the time), unless someone gives me a good reason, or indicates a profound desire, to see my penis. Not walking the streets waggling my cock at every person in the universe doesn’t indicate fear or shame of my (quite magnificent) dick, merely that I grasp the concept of decorum. I understand that while the cute baristo at the coffee shop probably has an abstract knowledge of the birds-n-bees and a mental map of typical male anatomy, being exposed to my radiant schlong would probably change her worldview, and totally distract her from the preparation of my mochachino (too no good end, since someone already put a ring on it baby). Pants simply ease my day, by cutting down on the gasps, the fainting women, the resentful men, and the cries of ‘Godzilla!’ from Japanese tourists.

I often wonder why OC advocates wear pants.

  29. This kid has more nuts than most of the people here, and hearing him speak, I can tell he isn’t a psychopath. If you don’t stand up for your rights then kiss them goodbye. As for the black woman wanting police instead, the kid can probably shoot better than most cops. If I had a armed CITIZEN cruising my neighborhood picking up trash I would thank and tip them.

Let’s see what one of his neighbors has to say:
(From the comments section of the original article on WCNC.com:

“John really has seemed to reduce crime in the neighborhood. I live in Walnut Creek. We have been inundated with crime in the past: Break-ins, shootings, drugs, gangs and assaults. Since around November, when he moved in, crimes seemed to have dropped. I like having him around and everyone that is willing to speak with him finds he is a good guy with good intentions. He seems to keep his fire arm safe and never seems to be looking for trouble. Also, the neighborhood has never been so clean!”

You may or may not like what he does, but he does appear to be having a positive impact on his neighborhood.

This. Positive actions go a long way. Someone is always going to complain…but who knows, in time he may win them over too if he can get them to grasp some common sense.

  32. Would you prefer that he stay at home and not take action in the community? I personally think it’s a good thing that you get a scrawny looking “nerd” doing this, so that people don’t view the entire gun community as a bunch of angry rednecks (which we sometimes are). Even going further, he’s actually picking up trash rather than simply playing neighborhood vigilante so that the neighbors around him will notice that he’s not a selfish nutjob but rather a well intentioned individual. The only reason what he’s doing could be arguably not okay is because of people like the lady who was interviewed whom unreasonably feels uncomfortable that he has a rifle. She even goes on to say, “what do you need a rifle to pick up trash for?” Do you really want to need a reason to carry a gun with you? Telling the kid to go home is exactly what the anti-gunners want. He didn’t have to carry a gun to pick up trash, he did it so that the people around him would see the gun and associate it with good, not evil like the media has painted in the last year.

    1. An awesome post.

  33. So are we supporters of the second amendment or not? I find it a little funny when we have someone that is excersizing their 2A rights we start by belittling and criticizing the guy. Is it necessarily what you or I would do? Perhaps not, but if it is lawful in the area; why not support, encourage and if need be, educate so that we have more people that will be willing to excersize their rights? This is one of the things I hate about certain segments of the community. I have seen people that will look down at people that are new to firearms or do things differently than we would and would rather talk crap than help others out to make the shooting community stronger.

Take this for what you will. /end rant

  34. More armed citizens equal less crime, the combination of open carry and concealed carry creates the ideal crime/terror/murder deterring environment. If more people would start open carrying their long arms, what criminal would dare attack? Most criminals are pussies who expect to have a monopoly of force, this man and other open carriers like him present a clear message to criminals and the deranged that they DO NOT have monopoly of force. Once upon a time in America, people conducted their daily business while armed and without any hysterical concern. We are supposed to be the land of the free and home of the brave, NOT the land of the controlled and home of the passive.

I live less than a mile from this guy, I’m seriously considering heading over there and asking him some of these questions, like “why the Ar mags” and if I can see his rifle’s markings.

also, will probably mention ENDO to him

Seriously…tell him to get on here and give us more details. There are a bunch of guys here that may be dicks about it (as already shown) but I’m genuinely interested.

hahah that would be epic. Definitely tell him about the post too! He can clear up some of the questions we have.
