I’m not into normally into “regulation”, but will they seriously let anyone start a firearm tactics “training” school?
I browsed around Asymmetric Solutions‘ website (Asymmetric DERP) for a bit, and of course came across the normal “we are advanced tier -9 operators who have operated in operations even in deep space in galaxies you’ve never even heard of” type stuff. The usual LOL-worthy jargon everywhere too.
At first glance it looks like the walls are just plywood…which they are, but according to Asymmeteric DERP’s comment on the video, the fill is what counts:
Even our small quick hit shoot houses are ballistic such as the one shown in the video. The plywood is a surface facia that prevents splatter. There is ballistic sheeting and 20 inches thick of compressed tire shred before the other side of the wall’s ballistic sheeting and plywood. 5.56 will not penetrate the first sheet and spalls into the plywood. 30 rounds of AP 7.62 NATO in the same impact point will not reach the other side of the wall. It is tested up to .338 Lap Mag.
The one thing I find interesting is sure the walls there are safe (apparently) for the guys on the other side… but why train like this with your entire team running all over the place like a bunch of retards when in a real life situation walls are not going to stop bullets? The reality is if you try and Mozambique a thug going for his piece in some shitty apartment in the hood and miss, you’re sending shots through walls and potentially into innocent people.
Who underwrites insurance for places like these?

The individuals running around like idiots are a full-time professional unit that trains at the facility regularly. I’m not sure what the original author’s CQB training consists of; however, these are fully acceptable methods of breaching and a push instead of hold dynamic clearing technique. Again, a quick view of the website shows other overhead camera angles of the same entry.

Which would result in a lawsuit with no shortage of real trainers lined up to be plaintiffs expert witnesses to parse out the piss poor training practices and how unsafe they are. Which will result in a judgement and closure of their immense training facility…

I feel like this training facility is probably legit, but the photos and verbiage on their website just make them look like chodes, which is my complaint with all of these supposed super badass operator training facilities. You get the standard mix of tacti-cool dudes running around with $2500 pimp my AR-15s, which is exactly what all of these websites look like, but then all of the sudden in the middle of the set, there is an image of some derpy looking dude standing next to George HW Bush and Barbara with black boxes over his eyes. Nothing is more badass tier -12 operator than standing next to elderly presidents, because ‘merica. The only thing better would be a bald eagle flying in front of an american flag with a k-bar in his mouth and the constitution in his talons.

It is evident that the person who wrote his cute little piece has not even the first clue about the reality of room and house clearing. It’s the most dangerous thing any operator ever does precisely because you get no “do overs” and yes, bad guys may spray lead through walls.

I agree with you, there is no clean and neat way to train this type of scenario, that’s why it’s so sensational and everyone knows about it. It’s very dangerous. There is a certain level of risk people have to endure during training to be safe and proficient on the battlefield. It’s not pretty. People get muzzle swept (flagged) ALL THE TIME in real battle as well as during training. It’s just something that happens. That’s why they’re training. That’s WHY they’re doing it, to get better. No one is perfect.

If you are refering to me (guessing you are, or at my fistbumping internet ninjas), yes, despite my massive vinkingbeard, I am no operator. However I am competitive handgun shooter (ISPC, I know, IDPA would be more “reals”, but living in a weedy communist-hippie country, IPSC is what we are stuck with) and I try to get to the range atleast 10 days each month for practice.
True, CQB is something I have never done, nor really care to do. I rather leave CQB to the professionals, like one of my very best friend. Ex-military no turned police – working in a Regional taskforce just below the National Task Force, dealing with organized crime, hostage situations, armed kidnapping, bank robbery etc. I have the deepest respect for him and the profession he has, keeping the scum of the earth away from us normal citizens. However if someone wanted me ill, and came krashing down my door, he would be in for a bad time.
However.. I have been priviliged due to my friendship with him being alowed to tag along when they train and/or visiting their “real life dynamic range” and see what they do when they go at it at full speed, and I can tell you this, they do not enter plywood shacks with old tyres in the wall with obvious gaps in them. Just becuse you need to train high risk scenarios there is no sense training with added danger to yourself or those around you. Taking a CQB/Room clearing course is obviously diffrent then training with your normal unit, since at a course you can be stuck with quite alot of people that you do not rely on regulary and/or are totally unsure of their modus operandi.
Also due to being active in the sporting community I have met many a professional in and around the firearms training industry, having one in my club building actuall trainging facilities aswell as various target for the military and police. None of either the privatly owned nor the military/law enforment ranges here, for these types of training scenarios are lacking in saftey. The the walls have semless sheets of balisticgrade steel/metal for well over .308 and rubber layers to soak up any ricochet, and then a layer of wood ontop of that.
I am less upset that they muzzlesweep eachother for days since that is naturally a part of how things will play out in a real combat scenario, yes, there are risks invovled in training. There are even risks IPSC since it is alot of transistions and firing during movement – but then again the security reglement is huge and the list how to get DQ from a match (more or less you did something really stupid).
I am however, quite upset that they claim the enviroment around them is totally safe (ie cannot shoot into another room, totally bulletproof) when it is obviously not.
Everything Beardly has said here is absolutely correct until the last line. Our houses are not plywood with tires inside of them. The house has 18 inch thick walls. It is a plywood facia to prevent spall followed by a layer of ballistic sheeting and shredded tire rubber packed into the resulting gap. Tires would, as Beardly said, leave dangerous gaps that would potentially allow an AP round or round that hit the seam of the sheeting in the perfect way to pass. The tightly packed tire shred covers this contingency.
If you look at the video or pictures of the house on the website you will see a large black pile of material on the right side of the house. That is the shredded rubber used to backfill the gap in the walls.
Oh, by the way, the Avatar image for the DERP in chief who wrote this piece tells me everything I need to know about him. Fingering rounds off with his AK 47 pointed aimlessly who-knows-where while doing something with a handgun.

If you would like to take part in the less mobility intensive parts of a course we have several Side by Side ATV’s on site and could dedicate one to you to assist with any impediments as needed. If not you are welcome to film or document as much of the course as you would like. Following day courses our instructors will often grill at the FOB and if interested you could join them. If your brother is a shooter or has interest we would welcome him along as well.
Our civilian course calendar is available online and you are welcome to observe any of the courses listed. During the week our facility is usually occupied with our professional clients and with their approval you may observe their operations as well.

Instructors claiming all flavors of SOF service, who are no longer on Active Duty, and not using their full names is a HUGE red flag. If they are actually who/what they claim, they would have no problem posting their full names, units, dates of service, dates of deployments, training recieved, etc.
Compare and contrast the instructors at Alias Training with these guys…massive Red Flag.

Iif you can’t see the difference between posting a comment on a blog and selling training by claiming to be a SOF veteran, then you may actually be as dumb as you come across in this comments section.
Again, compare the “instructors” at AS with the guys at Alias, Invictus, GGT, the current crew at MP Dynamics, etc.
If they actually had the qualifications they were claiming, the instructors page on AS’s website would include actual names, info, and dates.
Many of our instructors prefer to maintain some level on anonymity, especially those who recently left local LE SWAT units. It doesn’t take much more than a quick google search on many of them to determine who they are and that their backgrounds are fully vetted and entirely legitimate. Again- one was recently the subject of a nationally broadcast network television program.
Anonymity is often a facade unqualified posers use to hide behind. Not saying your instructors aren’t legit, but if they are who they say they are, your website would include this actual info. Making potential customers resort to google vetting your instructors actual backgrounds isn’t very smart. And, a bunch of former white SOF SEALs and SF dudes in Missouri have zero need for anonymity unless they have something in their backgrounds or qualifications that they are trying to hide.
Maybe some of the LEOs, and that’s a huge maybe, however, associating their name and background with a training facility isn’t exactly a huge PERSEC issue.

Lots of people who are protective of their image have Google Alerts set up on their own name. It’s very common.
Yeah it may be the bottom of first page google results now. It wasn’t when they got involved. I am fairly certain of this.
They likely see a jump in their video views and comments and then look at the youtube stats. There is also google alerts which we use at my workplace (web development company) but I don’t think they are smart enough to figure that out after reading the comments. People also might email them the link? I don’t think there is any conspiracy here.

That is exactly why we made a bankable invitation to have him come out and still hope that he takes us up on the offer. Our IT folks told us this has been great for web traffic and it is otherwise how we discovered the posting. Other than that it has made for some very funny reading and none of us are above this type of team house ribbing. I think we have adequately explained our position and intelligent people can figure it out on their own. I’ve been saying that since day one, directly in posts and in the comments section. Plenty of boring blogs out there for people to read if they want to. My readership has been steadily increasing since day one, I’m not interested in pretending to be something I’m not. It’s working very well. You mentioned the “negate my opinion” thing again. I truly do not care if anyone agrees or disagrees with my opinion and I’ll continue to write whatever I feel like on here. Funnier yet is if someone is looking to “agree” or “disagree” but would base whatever side they fall on only after looking at my “credentials” and “experience”.
Well you’re positing that this shoothouse and the events that took place within is unsafe or somehow extraordinary.
In order for that statement to be objective you have to have witnessed people of the same level of training that these guys were at (very very advanced according to AS) and witnessed them participating in a similar exercise. You repeat this to increase your credibility.
I think you’d lose all faith in most of our military’s very elite if you saw how their training went. Or maybe it’d open your eyes and you’d realize that there is a great bit of disparity between the what you expect things to be like vs what things really are like.

Considering the Swedish IPSC chapter changed their license model for IPSC rifle 3 days after I ordered my AR lower and other bits for a competition rifle for the 2013 season – in fear and/or wristslap a few clubs – Before a major lagislation might come in effect… late 2014.. more or less banning any semiautomatic rifle that can hold external Magazines of 6 rounds or more. Thankfully I was quick enough to cancel my orders on optics and handguard, but now I have a complete lower (these being totally legal and licensefree in Sweden) collecting dust for another 15 months… Now anyone that wants a rifle licence for IPSC needs to wait 24 months from their first competition license has been paid, even for a .22lr upper for IPSC mini rifle mind you.
It could be worse, but it is pretty bad. They cannot stop illegal weapons at our border (thanks for that EU) so the squeze the normal, lawful guy that think competitions and practices with friends is fun and a great hobby..

Absolutely not. I’ve taken classes from various different trainers and I have yet to meet one with all the answers. In fact, a couple of “big name trainers” have shown me TTPs that I absolutely disagree with. However, in the context of “shoothouses”, Pat is the only one I’m aware of who has produced video showing at least one way.
Part of my issues with fools who constantly muzzle other students, is what other safety violations are they committing? It’s sort of like reading an article in a newspaper that you know is FUBAR. Ever going to trust that reporter (or paper) again?

The AS guys may or may not be cool and legit (early offer was super cool – hopefully VS could do that) but they certainly need to control Smashed Balls on Fire or whatever he calls himself…he’s making them look really bad.

For one example: I have traveled lots farther than that to spend a grand on a class. And I go to several classes a year. So I’m a potential customer, except that now — based on my belief that Tiny Balls of Fear is really just an AS alter-ego — I am not. (At a time when their web page makes it clear they ar seeking to expand their civilian, non-LEO customer base.)
No great loss to them, maybe. I’m just one potential client from South Florida. Except that MANY more people read pages like this than will ever comment on them. And while not EVERYONE who reads the page will scratch AS from the list of facilities they’d pay good money to attend, plenty will — and I cannot imagine anyone reading this and thinking, “Yeah. Never heard of these guys. But this is a GREAT first impression so I’m in!” in other words, it’s a net loss.
Now, maybe the AS guys are in the business purely for shits and giggles. Maybe they are not capitalists. Maybe they live in a barter-based economy that doesn’t require currency. But assuming somebody there has some interest in making some money out of the enterprise . . . well, you get it.

Just browsing here during a break at work and smh at the commentary, but if you’re looking to travel a little ways and get some really great training, I would recommend the drive up to Perry.
Me and some guys from Miami have spend a few days there and will continue to make the trip. The facilities and instruction are top-notch. My opinion, anyway.
Now I’ve watched it…I don’t claim to operate in operations, but there was no reason whatsoever for all of those muzzle sweeps – one accident and that photographer dies. The walls being ballistic or whatever, fine. I’ll go with that – but there is no tire shred between the barrel and video man’s face.
I do understand that some high stress/cqb training scenarios require some of the basic rules to be disregarded, but from the camera pov this one isn’t one of them.

I’m a veteran (not anything “high speed”) and a firearms instructor. I’ve worked with SWAT and Military (both as an instructor and as a student) I also train regularly with a group of highly skilled people that I absolutely trust with my life. Muzzle sweeping is not something I take lightly. It has never been taken lightly by anyone I’ve ever trained with. Sometimes it happens but that does NOT make it okay.
Watching a video that is supposed to be promoting a trainer (or training company) that clearly shows someone muzzle sweeping multiple people does NOT instill confidence in those running that training. It certainly does NOT make me want to spend my hard earned money training with those people.
Some people will claim it’s “big boy rules”. Well “Big Boy Rules” doesn’t mean you do unsafe shit and don’t care, it means when you fuck up you OWN it. You don’t make excuses, and you don’t get pissy with someone who calls you on it.
Firearms training is inherently dangerous for everyone involved. There is no such thing as a “safe range” but you have to conduct training as safely as possible.

I took my first class last Friday 10/4/13 at ASolutions and I couldn’t be more impressed. Gun safety was paramount – the training excellent. The video is from a different class than I took, but all the skills taught and honed were skills that may be used in real life scenarios.

I am not sure who has actually taken any classes here. I took basics of tactical shooting back in April of this year. I was extremely pleased and satisfied.
It was very safe , organized , & full of information that could be used evey day. It seems like a lot of the haters are just yacking to get attention. I wonder who has actually held and fired a weapon?

After 27 years in law enforcement and retiring as a prison warden I thought I’d seen and heard it all. The ignorance displayed on this site is applalling. I am an AS customer and can attest first hand to their professionalism. You people who have no experience with AS should be ashamed of yourselves. To critique a clip ( I haven’t seen it) is one thing, to base an entire opinion on a short clip is ridiculous! These instructors are the real deal, these are not the first classes I’ve taken, but are definitely the best, safest, most professional. You guys are really a sad group- for what purpose- to raise yourself up by putting others down? Take a class and I’d be happy to listen to your opinion , but until you do or are better informed- shut the fuck up!
I have also trained at AS, both group class and private instruction. I couldn’t have asked for more relevant, combat oriented training than I received at AS. They are serious about safety and serious about training for the real world. They have created a learning environment that will test you if you take the right attitude. They are also not just civilian trainers. They have a professional training division as well.
Of course, visiting a blog and banging out sarcastic posts is a lot easier than getting off your ass and going to train with these guys. Those of us who’ve been there know what the rest of you are missing…
By the way, those of you who wanna snort and scoff at Stars Earn Stripes seem not to realize what’s important about that show. It demonstrates that Grady Powell is a skilled trainer even of celebrities with no experience, so the good news is…there may even be hope for you pinheads.

Wow……WOW!!!! Ive done some work w the AS guys, they are a top notch crew and I have the utmost respect for them. Ive never met a group of legit real workd bad asses, that are at the same time the most respectful and humble group of fellas I could ever have had the honor to know. I just stumbled across this thread while looking for some info, and to kill some time. Hoping to resume some training with them over the winter and help out the AS team in any way I can.
This is one strange Blog. I’ve trained at most of the top firearms schools in the country; former Marine; former cop and law enforcement firearms instructor; firearms instructor at the Police academy so a bit of a CV. However, I would never criticize a place until I trained there. Have a couple of friends that trained at Asymmetric Solutions (one a cop and the other a firearms instructor not law enforcement) and both spoke highly of their training and of the facility.
