What Is An Assault Weapon?

Some lady asks people on the street:

I was pleasantly surprised most of them didn’t say some type of rifle with fully automatic extended clips, shoulder things that go up, and heat seeking bullets that could shoot down police helicopters.

Assault-Rifle-Because-I-Am-BlackThis winner though –> 1:42 – “Uhhhh that would be something like an M16 or AR-15 made by Bushmaster or one of those gun manufacturers” he says with his stupid looking hat, sunglasses, and smugness.

Thoughts?

IDK, it sounds like she conducted 90% of those interviews outside a gun range or something. Except for the douche with the hat, they didnt sound like the general public I know.

This was originally posted over at The Truth About Guns (no, that’s not a slam against Mike at all), and I made the exact same observation (I think I used NRA convention). According to her, she did not edit out the “bad answers” and those were just random people outside a public transit station in Salt Lake City. I have no reason not to take her at her word.

There was at least 2 people that had heavy accents not from within the states, and most of them knew what the word “semi-auto” meant. hm

If Im not mistaken a assault weapon has multiple selections on the selector.. ie: Safe, Semi, Auto. It makes no difference in the make, model or manufacturer of the firearm. A firearm with just two (Safe, Semi) selections on the selector is not considered an assault weapon.

Lots or misinformed people out there thinking anything that can assault someone is an assault weapon. Including many in the political arena…

that’s just a select fire rifle, there are plenty of people that own machine guns and do not assault people with them.

You’re thinking of an assault RIFLE which is technical term. The gun community generally doesn’t consider “assault weapon” to be a technical term and don’t think it should be put into common usage since it has no meaning outside of being a legal term in those states that have bans on cosmetic features.

THIS. An assault rifle is definable, I think, while an assault weapon is a vague catch-all phrase convenient for use in popular media with anti-gun overtones.

I am guessing that an assault rifle is a long gun that is select fire and designated by a military entity as a main battle rifle. STG44 is probably the first true assault rifle.

Aha, just saw the wiki. Looks like an assault rifle is a intermediate cartridge (5.56, 7.62×39, etc.), magazine fed, select fire rifle. A battle rifle is the same but for higher powered cartridges.

AN assault weapon is a weapon to assault with, could be anything.
