Homemade Garbage Cannons

A foreign pastime apparently:

Apparently people either use lighter fluid or calcium carbide.  Pressure builds up inside when you put the flame near a small hole drilled in the back and KABOOM!

Doesn’t look like the safest thing on earth but hey life isn’t safe.

Garbage-CannonIn video one and two I think it’s pretty safe to say alcohol was involved.  LOL at the guy’s laugh in video one hahahah.

Thoughts?

Nice that ENDO picks up on this, it is called ‘carbidschieten’ and is a popular pastime for the Dutch and Belgians mostly living away from the cities. It is one of those things that have been done for a very long time and the authorities turn a blind eye to it. Probably because it rarely results in injuries (fireworks are a bigger problem).

They repurpose old milk jugs and place a bit of carbid inside, adding a little bit of water aswell. A small hole or sparkplug is used to ignite the can. The skill lies in using the appropriate amounts of carbid/water and using the right moment to ignite so that there is sufficient flammable gas.

Was about to mention that, water is necessary for it to work. Calcium carbide reacts with water to produce acetylene (welding gas).

Same thing is done in southern Europe (Balkans).

We used to fill paper sacks with acetylene from cutting rigs, twist the top, lite on fire and then put it under a trash can or cardboard box behind someone. The trash can generally went a few feet in the air and the boxes were left in pieces. Scared the crap out of people.

They used to sell Carbid Cannons out of the back of comic books. The carbid came in a tube like tooth paste
