GunBox Review

GunBox was kind enough to send me one of these for my handgun:

If this is your first time hearing about the GunBox, it’s a stylish / functional way to store your handgun away from the hands those who you don’t grant access. Those who have access are able to get at the gun quickly.

You’ll see the pictures on their website and almost definitely think “wow that looks cool”. I’ve read other reviews on the GunBox and people always mentioned how well built it is. That’s the type of thing that’s impossible to tell from the pictures, but I definitely echo those claims. This thing feels like it was made by Apple, as in it just feels like quality when you first pull it out of the box. It’s exterior is aircraft grade aluminum, has great contours, and the lid nestles into the bottom half so nicely.

Excited, I hooked up the included wall charger to the GunBox, plugged it in and with my girlfriend looking over my shoulder swiped the RF wrist band over the top of the center where the logo is. Next, we heard the unlocking of the interior latch and the pssssssssst of the hydraulics releasing the lid and 2-3 seconds later we’re looking at the inside of it. We both were like “whoa” because it was cool. I continued to shut the lid then open it over and over with the wrist band for the next 5 minutes or so. The novelty never did wear off, but my girlfriend’s patience definitely did.

At this point I figured it was time to try the biometric abilities, so following the instructions included I pressed the unlabeled button on the inside of the lid, putting the GunBox into “learn mode”, shut the lid and programmed in my index finger. This was simple, and you can actually program in 100 different fingerprints. Excessive maybe since were talking about access to a gun haha but the capability is there. You can either just use the RF wristband (small RF sticker also included… RF ring available on the website) to open the box, or you can require RF plus a fingerprint for added security.

Head over to the GunBox website if you’re looking to purchase one, or want more information. I highly recommend picking one up if you’re in the market for an easy-but-restricted-access type lockbox for a handgun.

If anyone has any questions for me about the GunBox, let me know in the comments.

Oh and lucky you guys GunBox was nice enough to agree to give an RF + Biometric model ($300 value) to a lucky ENDO winner!!!

  1. “with my girlfriend looking over my shoulder”

Now I question the truth to this review….

    1. No doubt. I’m starting to worry about ENDO Mike. His girlfriend fantasies are getting out of control.

        haha you guys

      2. Mmm I agree. Lol I won’t be the one to demand pictures, that’ll have to be someone else.

  2. Saw the GunBox when they came out, most certainly the most stylish way to store you gun. Pretty tough as well, two thumbs up from me (since I know all ya’ll care). I hope they gain popularity so they could be a bit more affordable. (for married guys on a budget)

  3. Looks like an answering machine

    1. ENDO-Mike Avatar

That’s a good thing! Crooks won’t steal answering machines. Maybe I’ll put play / stop / record buttons on mine and a little LCD :P

    2. An answering machine? What is this? 1999?! :P

  4. You think mike has one of those rapper answering machine messages? “Yoyoyo you reached the machine of the endo. Endo be shakin with his boo. Leave the message and he shake it wit you too.”

    1. ENDO-Mike Avatar

haha I should. On my voicemail recorded message now I just make an annoying BEEEEEEEEEEP sound and that’s it.

  5. How robust is this unit? Is it just something that can keep your gun away from the kids or will it resist a determined attack, i.e. if a thief has time to work at it. Which is in the realm of possibility in some suburban areas, i.e. the thief poses as a contractor and just parks his van in front of your house, goes in with some tools to “work”, sees your GunBox and has an hour or so of time to work at it…

    1. ENDO-Mike Avatar

It’s not a safe, nor is it very large so if a thief didn’t want to pry it open he could just throw it in his thief bag and open it at home. Definitely more for keeping the gun away from kids and other nosy people.

      1. Thanks for the clarification. So, this would be appropriate for a place to stow your EDC at night, if you have children or other curious people around, but it wouldn’t necessarily be a theft deterrent or safe storage place for long-term non-EDC gun storage. This could work in concert with a true gun safe. EDC in this, guns not in daily use in the safe.

Yea exactly! That’s how I use it.

Having the 100 different fingerprints doesn’t seem all that ridiculous to me. I’d be programming my thumb, index, middle and ring fingers for both of my hands probably 3 times over to help ensure that my print would open it every time. Then I would do the same for my wife’s prints.

    1. And program it for your noseprint as well, in case both your hands are disabled and you need to fend off an attacker with your mouth-gun.

  7. Can this work without the bracelet? Not looking to wear a bracelet… I leave that shit unlocked and loaded around the house anyways LOL

    1. ENDO-Mike Avatar

Yea there is a small RF sticker you can put on the back of your cellphone, TV remote etc.. then just wave it over the GunBox when you want it to open. Your other option is to use just your fingerprint to open it.

  8. RF AND GUNS DO NOT MIX.
Guys, I’m sorry but this has been exposed and hashed out several times now – RF technology is NOT in any way shape or form acceptable for use in or around firearms.

This product is another venture into the field of so-called “smartgun” technology – a true gun control wet dream.
Want to shut down all firearms in a 2 mile radius? Now there’s an App for that. I’m not speculating or being an tin-foil hatted alarmist here – I’ve watched a 16 year old solder together a simple device to jam RFID tags in a few hours. Please DO NOT be fooled into creating demand for this product.

Gunbox and Hornady are too busy drooling over the short term profits and paying no heed to the long term implications of this technology. Once the gun community accepts it in their accessories, it will be pitched as a “Proven technology”, and mandated in all new firearms. Think I’m being paranoid? California and New York have both fielded bills that do exactly this.

    Is it trendy? Yes.
    Is it cool looking? Yes.
Is it the future of firearms? Only if that future is George Orwell’s 1984.

You have valid points Ethan. I don’t doubt that RF can be defeated / disabled, however this thing is a “portable lock box” and should be used in that way. What you’re saying about it being pitched as proven technology and then moved into firearms is something I never thought of, but doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility (I agree that wouldn’t be good). If GunBox didn’t do it, a handful of other companies would have because the market obviously wants something like this. It’s up to us to make sure this technology doesn’t go past unlocking my GunBox, and into unlocking my gun before I want to use it.

      1. GunBox should also make a “biometric-only” version as well. Ethan’s RF comment has a lot of merit. I’d hate to be jammed by an an invader, or the government.

        1. The GunBox can be set to open using your fingerprint OR RFID or fingerprint + RFID. You don’t have to use RFID to open the unit. If an intruder comes equipped to your house with the technology to disable your GunBox, I think you have bigger issues. Lastly the government cannot disable the RFID on your GunBox unless they brought the appropriate tools to your house.

          1. “The GunBox can be set to open using your fingerprint OR RFID or fingerprint + RFID”
Irrelevant. Whether or not some people choose to use this technology has no bearing on if its responsible to create it in the first place.

“If an intruder comes equipped to your house with the technology to disable your GunBox, I think you have bigger issues.”
If i’m reading this right your logic is “Worse things could happen, therefore this must be a good idea.”

“Lastly the government cannot disable the RFID on your GunBox unless they brought the appropriate tools to your house.”
Now you’re catching on… how long did it take the NSA to highjack cell phone technology? 5 years max. Now your personal cell phone is one of their greatest intelligence gathering tools. Are you really so naive as to think people like Bloomberg and Feinstein won’t heavily push technology that achieves exactly that end?

Besides all that, you are limiting this discussion to just the GunBox – I’m talking about the gamut of future RFID technology in firearms and what that will inevitably lead to.

I’m not flaming here, but people have got to look at the big picture – look at what’s down the road, not just what’s right in front of you. This is a bad idea.

Ill stick with my sentry box from wally word fro 16 bucks works fine for edc in the car is steel is $16 and can be modified to accept the gun locks we all have as a tie down to secure to your vehicle. Why hav a gun locked up anyways. Teach the curious people or children its NOT a toy… Only reason to have a gun locked up is because your leaving it alone for a prolonged period of time (in which case it should be in a weighted safe or mounted safe.) Or because you legally can’t have it outside of a lock box as is the case in CA while driving without a ccw). Furthermore why not just buy a proven tough stack on they offer any option you could want https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-verizon&sa=X&sboxchip=Shopping&biw=360&bih=615&tbm=shop&q=stack+on+biometric+safe&ei=nTo0VIm9PMPkoASJ34CIAw&ved=0CIsEENsLMBY not one over 200 so why would i want to spend an extra hundo for looks i can spend less on some camo vinyl and pimp out my stack on and still have money to fill it with backup ammo
