ATF Demonstrates Machining An AR-15 Lower And Gets Trolled Gently

How to:

LOL the comments.  I find it hard to believe that the ATF itself is that worked up about this.  Politicians who don’t care to know any better, sure I can see that… but the ATF?  Surely there are bigger issues facing the F part of their job than people making AR-15 lowers off the books?  If not, I’d really like to see the stats on how many thousand murders happen every year with home machined AR-15 lowers.  The 2010 FBI crime statistic data for murders with weapons shows that rifles really aren’t used all that much in murders.  I look the liberty of totaling the columns from the FBI’s neatly provided Excel file and here’s what we have for the 2010 year:

  • Total Murders With Handguns – 6,009
  • Total Murders With Rifles – 358
  • Total Murders With Shotguns – 373
  • Total Murders With Firearms (type unknown) – 2,035

Total Murders With Firearms – 8,775

  • Total Murders With Knives or Cutting Instruments – 1,704
  • Total Murders With Other weapons – 1,772
  • Total Murders With Hands, Fists, Feet, Etc.. – 745

Total Murders With Weapons other than firearms – 4,221

Grand Total of Murders With Weapons – 12,996

Since we’re talking about rifles here, note that the FBI murder count for the year of 2010 is 358 people.  I’m not really sure why there are 2035 murders where the firearm is “unknown” (poor bookkeeping? poor state agency reporting?) but even if for kicks we say half them are rifles, that still makes rifles statistically less dangerous than knives.  Who knows though, since those stats are from 2010, maybe rifles have become the choice of murderers everywhere?  I doubt it, but maybe the ATF knows something we don’t.

I think it would be really interesting if we could get the numbers on how many of these murders were justifiable homicide.  This is EXTREMELY important.  Additionally, I’d like to know if suicide is included… because if it is I don’t think those numbers should count for obvious reasons.  Lastly, I’d like to know what percentage of the guns were owned legally, and how many were owned and used by already known criminals.

Whenever I see stats like this I can’t help but think to myself “…and people think firearms are the problem?”.  Look at the CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) Leading Causes Of Death data and tell me there aren’t bigger issues plaguing the country which should be focused on.

  1. Pretty sure they’re differentiating murder from justifiable homicide. And it doesn’t include suicides. Found numbers for 2011 (from CDC) and there were 19,990 by firearm (out of 39,518). Include that with the murders and you get “30,000 a year die by guns. Blah, blah, blah. So let’s ban the guns that only kill around 400 because they’re scary looking.”

Word on the street is the bois at ATF are running a 100% soy diet these days.

      commies 4 helicopter rides!

  2. So much hate in the comments! I’m loving this! XD

  3. I think 2012 figures are available. But they are roughly the same… The proportion of people killed by rifles is minimal…
Moreover, I think I read that in a previous post which was about gun-related incidents (and the fact that 1 kid by hour was sent to the hospital because of firearm), an impressive proportion of these homicides was actually gang-related. So, not really the general public…

  4. Guess they don’t know how to chuck up a 3/8″ drill either. Notice that it stalls while drilling.

    Some of my favorite comments:

“Are y’all going to send this one to Mexico?”

“Thanks for the demo. I’ll let you know how my build goes.”

“Cool, not like those “traceable” firearms you lost to the Mexican cartel.”

“Nice. Can you guys re-edit the video with all the steps? I assume you are planning some build parties with that sweet milling machine?”

“I’m sure if you want to make a full video Dimitrios would send you some AresArmor TShirts to wear :)

  6. Oh man, the comments over there are a gas. I hope this goes viral in the 2A community. I wonder if they are allowed to censor the comments seeing as how they are a public entity. Hope not. :-P

Lawyer here. They could turn off the comments, but they can’t selectively delete posts they do not agree with. 1st Amendment in the public sphere and all that. Methinks comments will not be available in the future.

  7. Looks like Obama ordered the ATF to get in on the Ghost Gun craze.

Just imagine BATFEIEIO trying to machine one of those scary shoulder things that go up. Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!

“Total Murders With Rifles – 358”

    But wait, there’s more!

This is counting ALL rifles, so, it is logical to conclude that since not all rifles are “military-style/assault weapon-y”, the actual number of homcides committed with “military-style/assault weapon-y” firearms is even less than the 358 given. Somewhere between 1% to 2-3% at the highest. So do what you want with those estimates as you will. Even IF all 358 were committed with such aforementioned weapons, that constitutes a very tiny statistical percentage of homicides with firearms, making their cause of death very far down the list of other more dangerous things.

So obviously this is the ATF intentionally supporting well-known anti-gun narrative (that is well refuted with even the most elementary of statistical analysis), trying to generate moral panic. Idiots.

Maybe instead of worrying about this and 7N6 5.45mm ammunition, they can just go away and dissolve for everybody’s sake. Maybe the unemployed BATFE agents can deservedly go work for the TSA or as security guards in one of the many malls of America.

Believe me, I have addressed this argument countless times on anti-gun echo chambers and it never gets old.

I believe it’s only a matter of time before the ATF changes 80% to a much, much lower percentage. It’ll probably get to where you can only buy solid forgings (with no holes at all) without an FFL. I don’t see how it could go any further than that, though, and someone WILL come up with a jig for those because necessity is the mother of invention and people appear to love the idea of making their own lower receiver judging by the flood of 80%ers on the market. If they tried to go after solid forgings they’d have issues because the companies producing the forgings would have to go through all the BS involved with being a firearms manufacturer instead of just a producer of aluminum forgings, not that the federal government has ever given a shit about hurting companies.

  14. Reminds me of that CNC 3 axis mill they had recently, which the builders explicitly made for the purpose of making “Ghost guns”. I considered buying one – Not to make guns, I have a lathe and a mill, I can do that already, but because a 3 Axis CNC mill for a grand two is a goddamned steal.
