Press Checks Are For Amateurs

haha right out of the gate “Press checks. I don’t teach them I think they’re retarded.”:

James-Yeager-Angel-ApprovedI was feeling nostalgic so I used the “Buck Yeager” pic on the left.  James grew the beard out now so his resemblance to Buck is no long that strong.  That said, I didn’t start googling Buck pictures to see if maybe he picked up a beard now too. *shrug* I’m not even sure what side of the gender spectrum Buck falls on right now, and I definitely don’t have enough journalistic (blogalistic?) drive nor the stomach to hit up google images and find that out too.

I wish James did more of these types of videos where he gets up in people’s faces with a strong opinion.  It’s what makes people the most mad, and got him a lot of his subscribers.

I don’t press check.  I sniff check, I’m THAT operator.  Thoughts?

Once Buck told you long ago
To the range with you he’d go
Now you’ve changed your mind, it seems
Someone else will have Buck dreams

      Haha nailed it as usual!

  2. Classic Buck! He still hasn’t replied to this guy’s video yet. I wonder if Yeager will step up to the plate?! – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJdP8d-RPaA

haha not surprising. That duel idea of his was the greatest publicity stunt ever though!

DUUUUDE! If you haven’t watched the Buck Angel documentary on Netflix yet you need to. Mind blown.

      Haha Yea?

  4. I RO some local matches every month. Several times that i can remember having heard a shooter try to chamber a round and could hear that the mag didnt seat and didnt chamber when they dropped the slide/bolt. crazy what you can pick up on if you listen

      You have good hearing!

  5. Well, his outfit in Iraq didn’t check enemy activity reports, didn’t check if anyone had a medium machine gun, didn’t check for alternate routes, didn’t check with coalition units in advance for possible support, so I’m not surprised he doesn’t check to see if his gun is loaded. It probably is. What’s the worst that could happen from not checking?

Oooooo I just called the Camden burn unit and they are on their way to tend to Yeager.

    3. -didn’t check his people to ensure medics dont end up with the SAW (WTF over!?)
-didn’t check all of the aforementioned important things you covered that should have been covered in the oporder (or whatever PMCs call it).
-didn’t check his hand break to ‘get off the x’ because that is kind of important when you are receiving small arms fire in soft skinned vehicles
-didn’t check who was at fault, because his story differs from everybody elses
-most importantly, he doesn’t check his mouth and his ego.

“What’s the worst that could happen from not checking?”

Good question. checking your gun before you go outside the wire costs nothing, except in his own convoluted mind.

Thank you for reminding me why yeager pisses me off and if I ever met him in person, he would get called out on his BS.

He can hear if the gun isn’t loaded. Bullshit!!!!

there is something of a grain of truth to it.

M1A pattern rifles feel/sound distinctly different when they chamber a round vs. not.

      I still press check though.

Know how I know that wasn’t James Yeager?

    1) He didn’t drop any F bombs.
    2) That’s not a Glock 19.

I only press check if I get handed a gun that I’m honestly not sure is loaded or not (slide closed, mag in, no manual safety, etc). Loaded chamber indicators exist for this, but not everyone has them, and a lot of people see anything that doesn’t come on the most basic stock Glock or 20th Century Smith & Wesson as a nuisance because “I dun need no dern loier safety!”

  9. Hunter57dor is on point. Yeager does have some merit here. Admittedly I was butthurt, because I do press checks (primarily when loading up to carry, followed by a rear slide bump and thumb over hammer when holstering *Sig bitches*!) But I agree with James that there is a distinct difference in feel and sound when a round gets chambered versus empty chamber. Hell, if you’re in Zen mode while shooting you can feel the slide reciprocating too.

Once condition is verified I don’t think anyone in their right mind would press check during presentation. He blew a stupid example of guys not wanting to pony up for whiskey way out of proportion.

  10. Sometimes Yeager makes sense. Here he doesn’t. Until somebody gets to the stage where they automatically know if a round went into the chamber, there’s no harm in performing a press check before putting the gun in the holster or readying a long gun for service. It’s just making sure, and we tell people to double check crap all the time. In the FA we had dual independent checks all the time. Go to a Pat Rodgers course and he teaches a check to ensure your M4 is chamber loaded. Yeager’s SEAL example is extreme and sure, that’s a terrible training scar. Nobody (nobody credible) is suggesting anybody should do a press check as part of an emergency reload for example.

    1. I thought I was OAF-enough to not press-check on the first stage at my last 3-gun match. I’ve loaded an M16A2, M4A1, and my personal ARs more times than I can count, and I can hear and feel when a round chambers and when it doesn’t. Or so I thought. My dirty nasty 20″ AR15 that I don’t clean on purpose made the sound and feel of a round chambering (probably a sticky cam pin because of the fouling). When the buzzer went off I got a *click* instead of a *pew*. You’re never too cool to press-check at the proper times.

      1. but but, thats the “mindset of an amateur”. :D

How are you going to hear a round seating with hearing protection on?

Are you willing to trust that you can tell that sound in the dark, with a noisy background?

What if your gun made that cool-guy chambering sound, but was slightly out of battery?

The press-check is situational, and optional. However, listening for the sound of a chambered round is fraught with hazard and derp.

  12. What a load of tripe. I’ve actually agreed with yeager on some things, but this isn’t it, among many other things.

I like how he applies the “reductio ad absurdum” logic by implying that everybody that press checks does so before they draw their gun to shoot a bad guy. Ridiculous. No idiot would do that (and his example is a poor one).

What is even more ridiculous is that he assumes you can discern the differences basically anywhere else besides a completely quiet room, nevermind an assembly point before going outside the wire, or with your group of certifiably badass warfighters.

Yes, it is “free” james. It costs you nothing to check to see if you have a round chambered. it costs everything if you “loaded” your gun and for whatever reason, it isn’t loaded.

  13. you know I was looking to go to a school and his was never on the list. I’ll be damned if I pay someone to call me a pussy
and holler at me when his SOP is to stall the truck and piss his girl panties in a ditch and support a fraud like corey.
