History Of The Minigun

Ahoy with the history and dat accent:

You know I love that guy’s vids.  Great vector graphics as usual.

haha 3:40 he mentions Predator and T2.

Anyone who uses Wolfenstein and Doom to support their thesis is good with me. *daps*

Minigun-Wheelchair-26:45 – “The soft whirr of the electric motor; the prelude to a cacophony of carnage.” <— Well put.

Remember minigun wheelchair (pictured)? haha

Question for you guys.. with the high rate of fire on these things does the brass get deformed at all when it’s ejected so aggressively?

I don’t think miniguns eject brass any more aggressively than normal automatic weapons. In modern miniguns each barrel has its own bolt and ejector, so multiple instances of loading and ejecting can happen at once. For example, if a 6-barreled M134 is firing at 6,000 RPM, then each barrel is barrel is ejecting rounds at a rate of only 1,000 RPM.

You can see how the firing sequence works in this animation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXvZaEqi80o

In fact it is rather gentle on the brass. It all works on cams, so the ejection is very controlled, unlike a typical semi auto rifle that attempts to rip the case rim from the rest of the cartridge.

Whoa nice.. yea that does look gentle on it! Good call on the 1000RPM per barrel, I feel like an idiot for not realizing that.

Surely someone, somewhere, has attempted to shoot one from the hip. Though I can’t imagine it being at all safe.

The wheelchair mounted minigun should be pointed to the rear and used as a propulsion device.

FPS Russia shot one from the hip.

The rate is insane… I mean, 100 rounds shot per SECOND!!! I get half a boner just thinking about it…

There is a man portable version of the mini gun. Its the M214 chambered in 5.56. The system was called the GE6pack. This is what is featured in predator and T2.
