John Oliver On USA Torturing Prisoners

This is hilarious:

0:58 – “We tortured some folks” -Obama    LOL uh ya no kidding that’s a weird way to phrase it.

mr-chow-hangover-did-you-die4:58 – Subjected prisoners to Russian roulette… threatened with a power drill, rectal rehydration.

Is John Oliver fairly new?  I only heard about him recently after he interviewed Edward Snowden (haven’t watched it yet, but it looks funny).

  1. John Oliver has been around for awhile. Most people know him from guest hosting for the Daily Show a bit ago while Jon Sterwart was on vaca filming a movie. Also known for being the crazy British perv/professor on Community. So yeah, you been sleeping on him for awhile LOL

He has been around for years. I’ve always liked his “coverage” of the Mumbai attacks:

  5. The Snowden interview was a HUGE waste.
Whenever it looked like Snowden was about to open up with something interesting or different from previous interviews; Oliver would run his mouth or make a stupid joke. You can tell Snowden realized he wasn’t being taken seriously and just went along with it vowing never to speak to this dumbass again.

I’m not a Snowden fan but I’m willingto listen because what he uncovered is the smoking gun of the 2010s.

Aw damn. Normally I like what Snowden has to say. From seeing the preview though I did get the impression that it was all going to be a big joke. Now you confirmed it.

  6. Oliver has been a bit player on the Daily Show for a long time, until he got the promotion to the big chair.

Wow yea I’m so out of touch with TV. I’ll have to check out some more of his stuff, thanks!

      1. You have to check him out on community too!

  7. There is a certain “giggle factor” listening to this guy. Conversely, that Senate report, which cost $40 million dollars to research and assemble missed the most important portion, not a single CIA employee or contractor was interviewed, especially those involved with Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (EIT). The referenced report was an assembly of very poorly interpreted documents.

EIT is not torture, all of our Tier One BAMF’s as well as a number of cilivians undergo it during SERE training. We don’t torture our own people.

Waterboarding was used on 3 bad guys – that’s it. KSM and two of OBL’s couriers, one of which gave the name of the dude which led us to Abbottabad, then to Bin Laden’s place. The rest is history.

Can you give a source for your last paragraph? (waterboarding was used on 3 bad guys). Not doubting it, just would love to be able to use it for my own discussions if it ever pops up and be able to back it up.

    2. Thank you for mentioning this. I heard it all when this news was fresh, but this guy is recycling such old information that I needed a refresher on how flawed that report truly was.

  9. The president is known to selectively make his speech more or less colloquial. Oh well, I mean, why not. In this case though, calling the torture victims “folks” is off key. And referring to the number of the as “some”.

  10. The Snowden interview was fuckin gold.

  11. Just a test.

  12. test again!

Oliver is another red propagandist disguised as a satirist (like Jon Stewart, Michael Moore, etc…) his humor is there to make him likable, in spite of his obvious far left leanings.

    1. Unfortunately, like those other left-leaning comedy journos, the left-wing stuff is mixed in with some really excellent investigative reporting. John Oliver’s reports on infrastructure, FIFA criminality, and cigarette companies’ hijinks, for instance, were actually very good.

  14. I like John Oliver and Last Week Tonight. Pretty consistently funny stuff. I’m always entertained.

I’m not one of those agro-idiots whose political learnings dictate every other aspect of my life though. So YMMV.

  15. He missed the whole point of why we tortured people in the Middle East.

We are fighting savages. Simple as a that. They do not respect basic human decency, let alone the rules of war. Every time we have a restrictive rule of engagement, they interpret it as our weakness. We had to prove that we were tough enough to take them on. That we were willing to hurt them. What we proved was that we were more scared of us treating them badly than we were of them.

If we want to do away with torture, I’m fine with that. We just need to replace it with an enemy body count in the tens of millions.

  16. 7:05-13, Diane “Ban guns, they’re bad,” Feinstein says the torture was legit.

They must pump a big tank of Crazy into her water supply every morning.
