Chicago Trys To End Gun Violence By Turning To Twitter

400 murders so far in 2012, and naturally they want Twitter users advice:

The City of Chicago is asking residents with ideas on how to get illegal guns off the streets to share their thoughts — in 140 characters or fewer on Twitter.

The best submitted ideas will be debated at an Oct. 11 panel discussion during Chicago Ideas Week.

Participants may submit their ideas by using the hashtag #WhatIfChicago.

With a quick twitter search for the hashtag I was glad to see a lot of people not trying to blame the guns.  The twitter account @WhatIfChicago has been engaging some of the tweeters lately too.

This is obviously a social media marketing campaign for the upcoming Chicago Ideas Week (Starting Monday October 8th).  I hope the “best” ideas they pick to debate are not ones that will end up screwing over non-criminal gun owners in Chicago over.

I underestimated the power of facebook and got a really late start. The number of followers I currently have there is not at all representative of the actual traffic this blog gets.  I hope you guys can bring that a bit closer to equilibrium for me.

Seattle Police Use Twitter To Help Locate Stolen Vehicles

When a car is reported stolen, an officer will confirm the report and get the owner’s signature on a form, Lt. Mike Edwards of the department’s investigations procedures unit said. Once that form is signed, the officer will call into the dispatch center and the information — a vehicle’s color, year, make, model, body type and license-plate number — will be tweeted to Twitter followers.

“It’s a force multiplier,” with citizens helping police see stolen vehicles and, hopefully, get them back to their owners more quickly, Edwards said.

Interesting idea if it works for them.  I could see it also working in the favor of criminals because they could just ditch a car once it has been tweeted.
