Automatic V.S. Semi-Automatic Weapon Semantics

Automatic weapons are SOOOOOooo easy to buy says Don Lemon:

Assault-Rifle-Because-I-Am-BlackPffft it’s all semantics bro, he says.  I really don’t think that guy realized he was wrong, and the guy on the right had that grin and was nodding “yes” when Don Lemon was trying to school the middle guy.

This is bordering on “Shoulder Thing That Goes Up” epicness, but not quite as epic since it’s not like Don is a senator or anyone important.  This was the first time in my life I’ve ever seen that guy, so I googled him and turns out he’s a “journalist” (haha yea that makes perfect sense) and a CNN anchor (even more sense).

Thoughts?

  1. He had the opportunity to focus on the conversation on how someone with a criminal record, or a prohibited person, cannot purchase a firearm at a gun store. Instead all of them went DERP.

  2. It sounds like the conversation got totally off topic by the way the beginning started.

  3. The guy on the right is Van Jones. Obama’s former green job czar who had to resign after his communist ties were revealed. He stayed quiet because he knows Lemon was wrong but it helps his point of view.

On the other hand, Don had a hard time with Talib Kweli as well. So that was fun.

So the difference between an automatic transmission and a standard transmission must be semantics too.

  6. They must have consulted with that infamous Rolling Stones article.

  7. Ignorance is bliss…

  8. Someone send Don one of the new Operator t-shirts. Let’s crowd source it!

This is the same Don Lemon who was pilloried by the left last year after he admitted that “military-style assault weapons” weren’t a serious problem in the US. And that being disarmed is setting yourself up to be a victim.

  10. So silly. Arguments about illegality and what is semi auto or auto will never do anything for gun rights arguments. Anti-gun people don’t care about the difference. When will gun guys finally get this?

I disagree. Calling something an “Assault Rifle” and saying that that it’s “automatic” work to increase how scary it is to the general public. People use that to disassociate semi-automatic rifles from regular hunting rifles. Works like a charm apparently.

Don Lemon is no journalist. He openly and gingerly admits to personal bias in both interviews. He strays from the front line if he can help it. He doesn’t check his facts, his sources, his “semantics”. He consistently bleeds unprofessionalism.

Mike, not all journalists are dimwits. It is a complicated job, my BS in communications is actually in journalism. I would get in massive trouble for finding the facts, gettin politically incorrect and telling the truth at the local and university papers. Usually your higher-ups report to someone. News has to be how “they feel” it should be portrayed.

I hear you, I know not all journalists are idiots. It does seem though that a lot of the ones at these high-profile new stations are though so it gives all of you a bad rap. Pretty sad what you mentioned about how news is delivered as a result of a persons boss’ “feelings” but I guess that’s not surprising. :/
