Value of human life is not that high outside US, Canada, Japan, Western Europe. The funny thing is, those of us in those areas see/read/hear about high loss of life tragedies outside those areas and shrug, as if to acknowledge the local mores. If 129 hostages died in the US, it would be craziness for weeks. In Russia, you don’t take hostages…hostages take YOU!
That’s a good point Jeremiah. I suppose there is so much of a disconnect between our cultures (outside of the areas you mentioned), that it is hard to even comprehend when lots of people die.
Japan? Not exactly a high regard for life kinda place – remember the Kamikazes? The battles of Midway, Iwo Jima? etc? And lest we forget how little the cared about their civilians after the first A-bomb got dropped. Took two for them to surrender.

As I recall, the Russian philosophy is to consider hostages as already dead. If they get any back alive, hey bonus. There was a movie theater in Moscow, I believe, where some jihadi hirabis had taken hostages. They used nerve gas. Those hostages they got the antidote to in time survived.
If that is indeed their philosophy, that is pretty harsh to say the least.
Not nerve gas, a powerful opiate designed to sedate everyone, the few hostages that dies, did so because they were either already weak from being starved and/or had existing health issues.
well if any of russian hostage rescues over the last couple of years taught us anything is that they tend to favor kill bad guys first, worry about hostages later rather then save life first, kill second.
