In coordinated attacks, gunmen in armored cars and equipped with grenade launchers fought army troops this week and attempted to trap some of them in two military bases by cutting off access and blocking highways, a new tactic by Mexico’s organized criminals.
At least 18 alleged attackers were killed and one soldier wounded in the fighting that erupted Tuesday in half a dozen towns and cities in the states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon, the army said, topping off one of the deadliest months yet in a drug war that has raged for nearly 3 1/2 years.

18 Mexican gang members killed – one soldier wounded? Works for me… that means that either the Mexican soldiers are really good, or the gang members are comparable to the Afghan Army. Regardless of the outcome, it’s frightening that the gangs have the audacity to attack their own country’s Army.

It’s more likely it was a show of power by the druggies. Keep in mind the druggies outnumber the army by a fair percentage…
Yes, I’m sure the druggies didn’t mean to lose eighteen guys, but it’s entirely possible- if not probable- the druggies gathered up a handful of low-level flunkies and “mules”, gave ’em guns and armor, filled ’em full of “oh yeah, they’re easy pickin’s, none of ’em know how to shoot, think of the street cred!” and sent ’em on their way.
Don’t for a minute think that any of the attackers were anything more than glorified bagmen.
And now the next time a drug lord says to a judge, or police chief, or a mayor, or a politician, something like “you see? Even the army cannot protect you if we decide to kill you” they’re much more likely to quietly take the big wad of bribe cash and shut the hell up.
Sure, it could have been a better showing by the druggies, but all the boss has to say is “yes, but that time we only sent twenty men. When we decide to kill you, we’ll send one hundred.”
There’s *way* more going on down there than just the public gunbattles.
