They tried to repro this on Mythbusters, and you know how terrible they are with guns…
Basically they couldn’t get it to work.

That is being kind. I stopped watching Mythbusers because any time guns or explosives are involved, the show turns into a sort of State/LEO worship infomercial. Those two guys are pretty smart but when they’re on camera licking the boots of that bureaucrat they bring on to ignite anything bigger than a Black Cat, I throw up in my mouth.
I would say its plausible assuming the projectile had already penetrated several barriers (windshield, head rests etc.) first.
