I’d love to make one of those street legal… sadly I don’t think too many states (if any) would allow that. I could have sworn I saw quads such as Yamaha Raptors on the side streets in California, so I don’t know.. maybe you can switch the “use” from off-road to on road there? Anyone know? The thing I find interesting is that you can buy a motorcycle and ride it on any road and no one even bats an eyelash… these things though have 4 wheels, seatbelts, and roll cages and they are considered off road only as far as I know.

FYI, there are ton of off-road only motorcycles. They’re lacking turn indicators, brake lights, and license plate mounts. The VINs designate them as off-road only (unless you’re Husqvarna and screw it up sometimes).
Wasn’t there a company producing conversion kits (turn signals, headlights, et cetera) to streetlegalize off-road bikes? I could swear there was a few years ago…

Bwaaaha… I’ve shot more than a few music videos and promos in that “Middle-Eastern” town. Not that I expect them to go to a legit sandbox to film their commercial, I’m just amused at how quickly the illusion is destroyed when tacticool operators roll into the same town as everybody else who has to invade Iraq/Afghanistan on a budget. This set is about 40 minutes North of L.A. and you might recognize it from some Freddie W. videos.

Mike, in regards to your question about street legal capabilities: When I worked in Montana over the Summer (and soon to be back to the Livingston area for another season) people drove their RZRs, 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, etc. all over the place on the street. They use them like pick up trucks there. It wasn’t odd to see a few parked outside the local grocery store. They even issue license plates for them. I could have sworn I even saw a plated lawn mower. Thus, if you want to shred up the streets with one of these, go to Montana. It really is a cool place.

To have any effect whatsoever you’d be talking a thousand pounds of uparmoring. Hell the door on an uparmored HMMWV weigs hundreds of pounds and can break you leg if it shuts on you too fast (true story).
These are about mobility and speed. Armor enough to matter is armor enough to drastically reduce operational range too.

You must be joking, or never wore armor. My 10×12 SAPI plates weight 7.5lbs each, 100 lbs would equal aprox 33×48 inches.
And those plates require a kevlar vest behind them, standalone plates weigh even more.
That also doesnt take in to account that you’d need a real engine, rather than that 800 someodd cc motorcycle engine it comes with, a strong frame and suspension, a structure to support the doors and roof, larger gas tank, run flat tires, etc. All of that stuff weighs alot, not to mention cost. At that point, you would end up with a very cramped and slightly smaller HMMWV. There is a reason this thing doesnt come with doors, dead weight.
maybe I’m retarded, but if each plate is 7.5 pounds then by my math it would take over 13 plates to equal 100 pounds of armor. If each plate is 10 X 12 thats roughly 133 X 160 which is almost 150 square feet. That sounds like more than enough to cover the front and sides of that little buggy. 100 pounds is almost half the weight of one average soldier so I doubt it will significantly affect range or performance.
Upon further research, extra large SAPI plates weigh 5.3 lbs and are 11 x 14.
That means it would take almost 19 plates to hit the 100 lb limit, which would give us a whopping 380 square feet of coverage, meaning you would only need about 50 lbs to plate a buggy.
There are many different kinds of SAPI plates, mine is from 3rd gen Ranger Body Armor.

That isnt the correct plate, the AMI is a steel plate. I dunno who made mine and i’m too lazy to pull them out. All I know is that my vest with the plates weighs 25 lbs.
And I’m guessing there is a reason why HMMWVs use much heavier steel armor rather than ceramic. I’m assuming ceramic plates would be prone to shattering under off hard use road conditions.
