Police Officers Getting Owned By Knife Attacks In Training Video

Ban assault knives!  Ban assault Asian dudes!  Ban bandana and track pant wearing assault thugs!

So what’s the lesson here?  Police either should draw their guns during routine interaction with a person, or else maintain a huge distance between them and the person to avoid getting potentially stabbed?  Better issue every police officer bull horns so they can yell at people from a distance with their gun ready. Maybe even just to be safe the police officer could get a remote controlled robot to deliver a cellphone to the person they want to talk to, while they sit 200+ yards away with the guy lined up in the crosshairs of a precision rifle.

I was just going to say – I believe the lesson is not to be one dimensional in your self defense training (“I’ll just shoot’em!”), particularly when it comes to hand-to-hand fighting.

Slightly off topic, this video makes me think of the Metal Gear Solid CQC techniques, which supposedly are used in real life (http://www.konami.jp/gs/game/mgs3/english/system_cqc.html) by some special forces groups. But even if that is true, CQC seems much too difficult to use by normal civilians or police. I’d probably just stab myself on accident reaching for a new mag, ha ha.

I remember seeing this. I dig these retro training videos.

Look like variations on the Tueller Drill. Basically, within 20 or so feet, gun draw is likely to be too slow to stop a suddenly rushing assailant. Within that bubble, you need empty hand techniques to buy yourself time and space to draw. Or get slashed by the high capacity assault knife.

If I had to summarize this video, id say if you are a fat desk jock way past your prime, you shouldn’t be on patrol. leave that to people who weigh less than 300. I see way too many cops that honestly are there too look like they are enforcing the peace. but if they ever had even a bit of resistance, things will go downhill. as seen in so many of these filmed police incidents, they rely on their uniform, not people or physical skills.

The guy at the beginning, Dan Inosanto, was a hoss (may still be). He was Bruce Lee’s best friend and trained with him, became one of his instructors, etc. here in the states before Lee went back to Hong Kong to make movies. I was lucky enough to take a few seminars under Inosanto in the 90s. He was in his 50s at the time, but he could still kick anybody’s ass. I don’t think he’s a good representative of the guys cops go up against. :)

Maybe next we could do a video showing how much cops suck at empty hand skills in a set-up scenario with Georges St.-Pierre as the bad guy…

Don’t even make fun of it, in my country there was a major discussion about banning “assault knives” and balaclavas (I’m serious) a few years back. Didn’t get through, but still. And no, we don’t have guns.

I’ve done training like this with a knife “master” I don’t remember what style he was but it was fierce.

which one of those old cop training videos has the jerk with the hat full of razorblades and they act like that’s a serious threat that happens everyday?

“So what’s the lesson here?”

Umm… Did you actually bother to watch the video you are making fun of? Because it seemed pretty clear to me.
