Obama Sanctions And Russian AK-47s

MAC speaks on it:

AK47-Marijuana-PipeBasically, people are freaking out over something that isn’t the end of the world according to MAC.  Obviously annoying, but there are still other countries to get this type of stuff from.  I absolutely love the idea of US manufacturing, and fully hope an all US AK-47 happens.  It will likely be a bit more expensive due to the cost of labor here, but hopefully nothing crazy because of the grand scale of this all.

Thoughts?

Century International Arms already makes a 100% American-made AK-47 called the Centurian-39. All milled and comes in a few different variants (laminate, polymer, and a tactical version). Hickok reviewed it favorable, Yeager did a favorable review after a 1000 round quick dump, and most reviews seem to like it. It’s apparently been a few years but it’s not super well known because some people just don’t like Century, despite its $600ish price tag. I just got mine a few weeks ago and love it.

I always make it a point to do the opposite of what Yeager says. From my research into AK’s, it’s hard to classify Century AK’s as they seem to be from any number of parts sources. Best case scenario, they’re a gamble and I’ve seen more than a few that were losers.

The best thing anyone can do when it comes to AK’s is research…ALOT.

      1. Strictly doing the opposite of what a professional in your field of interest suggests is probably not the best policy.

I don’t regard Yeager as a “professional”. Deriving income from an activity doesn’t mean you know anything.

Before we argue semantics, let me ask you this:

If some skank takes an iPhone vid of herself blowing a hobo, posts it on the net and makes money off of the hits…

Is she now a professional porn star? If she is classifiable as such, does it in any way validate that she has the resources or talent of a true professional in her field?

      Wow.

One simple comment with the word “Yeager” in it and so many people get all butt hurt.

pointblank4445 – so if the parts aren’t all made in the same mill/room/building/factory then they won’t work together? Seriously? Using that logic, any gun with an upgraded anything from any other brand should never work, but yet I have a lot of modified guns that all go BANG when I pull that trigger to argue otherwise.

Also, while I have no love or hate for James Yeager he (and his team) did in fact put a 1000 rounds through the rifle model in question and had video of the whole ordeal from start to finish. 1 FtF during that exercise (which was blamed on the magazine). The rifle held up well minus the plastic handguard that was melting off. Pretty good by any measure regardless of the why on the FtF.

But since James Yeager was involved it completely invalidates the whole experiment? Dozens of other respected reviews from various sources are all now invalidated because James Yeager happens to agree? How petty an attitude that is.

If you’ve got some personal experiences with the subject in question, or maybe some credible reviews, or some pictures/video of C39 failures I’d love to see them. I’m amazed at how many (of the FEW) negative reviews of the C39 are from people with the same attitude, who have never owned nor used the rifle, but still get incredible diaper rash from the idea that someone doesn’t agree with their weak armchair assessment. More people that claim to own it, like it than dislike it. I own one and I love it. I can walk you through several specific reasons why it’s great, a few specific reasons why it’s good, and one or two specific area’s it could use improvement.

There is no irony, you are so biased against one person that it invalidates all research done by others. You claim to be logical and scientific yet do the opposite.

If you honestly think a sarcastic crack about doing the opposite of what Yeager says is actually how I roll. It would be hard to do since I don’t actively seek out his work; his gems get forwarded to me. Those jokes are obviously are lost on you.

Second, my experiences with Centuries are chock full of failure and frustration. Mostly with the C93’s, a Golani, and one Tantal clone. Some were brought into working order, some weren’t. That’s why everyone has to do their own work/research. Your results may vary, I’m out on anything Century when it’s my dime. I’m sorry if I can’t validate your spending decision.

Thank you so much for your amusing and entertaining exchange. Your new handle tells me that my work here is done

  2. As a Ruger fan… I’d love to see Ruger develop and SR-7.62×39… laugh if you will…. but Ruger is the leader in lean manufacturing and cost-efficient manufacturing of firearms… a Ruger AK with a precision investment-cast receiver, composite stocks, and rails on the fore-stock right from the factory – all American-made – for a reasonable street price… I’d buy one… and THAT would sure be news in the gun world…

  3. My local gunshop manager tells me that Russia has cut off exports of ammo to the US – Wolf, Tula etc.

Can anybody confirm this? That’s a lot more bothersome to me than just not having Russian AK weapons.

I almost shut the video off because of his initial comments. The fact is, this is not an Obama back door gun grab. The government is imposing sanctions that would reduce the amount of money that particular country is receiving from a certain product i.e. Siagas, Veprs, and AK style rifles. People have a tendency to get pissed off when you mess with their money.

People can still make, sell, and buy AK and all other variants of the rifle. The term “gun grab” doesn’t even make sense, in the aspect that a grab is an action that is taking in a quick and informal way. Obama is restricting these firearms, he’s not taking them. If he was taking them i.e. grabbing, he would make an executive order to cease all sales and transactions of all AK type rifles and shotguns and then he would confiscate them. None of these have happened.

Don’t misconstrue things because of a lack of understanding. I bet you 200 Mosin-Nagants I can march down to a gun store, pawn shop, or gun show and find an AK, Siaga, and if I’m lucky, a Vepr for sale.

      This.

I’m no fan of this administration and am one of the first to stand up when the 2nd Amendment is being threatened, but I cannot argue with the sanctions imposed on Russia. The rooskies are becoming frighteningly aggressive in Eastern Europe and hopefully economic pressure can persuade them to back the f*** off before NATO or UN peacekeepers have to be deployed. It sucks that some AKs are effected by this, but its myopic and stupid to think that this is some sort of backdoor swipe at our rights. I love MAC but he needs to pull his head out and look at the bigger picture.

Bro, I don’t have $200.00 to lose that bet.

    3. Exactly. Thank you.

  5. One reason these Russian and Bulgarian guns are “better” and sought after is because they use foreign barrels still (steyr forging process > US barrels). Romy kits have not shipped with Romy barrels so they have declined in quality. There are some however that are shipping complete rifles from Romania if I’m not mistaken and even some Radom ones from Poland so yes, there’s still good stuff out there. But folks who know their AKs know to avoid crappy, soft US barrels. Why have a 5-8k round count US barrel when you can have 12k euro/combloc barrel?

    1. Russian and Bulgarian guns use “foreign” barrels? Alien barrels maybe? Condemning American barrels as soft and crappy and not knowing many American companies use the hammer forging barrel making method is almost as stupid.

  6. NO Wolf hasn’t been cut off. Nor has “red army”, PPU, Wolf gold or most of the other 7.62×39 as it IS NOT MADE IN RUSSIA. I think your “G&A store” is trying to kick start a panic buy and make a few bucks. And for all you “we gonna kick Russia’s A**” guys. The US Military is now the same size it was in the 1930’s when it was # 64 in the world– behind Brazil. Our military has been “downsized” to the point where it(ALL OF IT) is now the same size as ONE Russian army group; and they have 24 Army groups. We (the US ) have NO tanks in Europe . NATO has less than 800. The Russians have 15 THOUSAND, more than half of them first line T-90s or newer. Their Air Force is almost all brand new Gen. 4 and Gen 5. aircraft and outnumbers the 1970s vintage F-15 and 1980s vintage “Eurofighter” and F-16s in all the NATO Airforce’s COMBINED by more than 9 to 1 . We have 12 attack subs; The Russians have AT LEAST 25. We can’t put more than half of the ships in our Navy to sea. We don’t have the sailors to man them. The truth is that after 20+ years of “downsizing” the US AND NATO would only last about three to five DAYs Verses the Russian military. It is to small, its equipment old and worn out after almost 30 years of endless combat in the Mideast and Balkins. We have NO usable reserves. The MBTs Bradly’s, Gavins and HUM-Vs(and damn near everything else) are almost all in depot storage, or have been sold off thru the DRMO system. 80% of the aircraft that were in the USAF in the 1990s are now in the “boneyard” in “mothballs” . Our Air force and Naval aviation are the same size they were in 1940. We have “Demilled” something like 90% of the “Nukes” AND the launchers. So while y’all are screaming “We Gonna kick them Ruski’s butts” I’ll just ask; “what with; your government threw away the military”

I was (am) curious about some of these numbers. USA has 70 subs, Russia 45. If anyone can point to better numbers, I’m game. Not sure what you classify as “attack” class, but just about any functioning submarine is going to be capable (or readily made capable) of providing some sort of effort in war-time. I’m interested to do more research on the other numbers. I’m not arguing your core point that the United States can be or is currently outclassed. That wouldn’t surprise me one bit. One of the very few expressly mandated duties of our federal government and it’s not happening(cough border security cough sovereignty cough). I still think my own government poses a more real and present danger to my life and liberty than Russia. Call me crazy.

The “Red Army Standard”(ridicilous name for several reasons) is good IMO. I am especially a fan of the “Elite” which is brass cased, boxer primed, non corrosive and uses the M67 bullet. Only Lapua is IMO better.

I’d say it’s pretty much the end of the world for any hope of getting the 107’s and Saiga 9mm. And anyone who says this isn’t a backdoor assault on gun rights is lying to themselves. If we dealt exclusively with friendly nations that abided by so called basic human rights and non-aggression standards then what are we doing with China Venezuela Saudi Arabia etc? The economical dent of this ban will be less than marginal to the Russian economy. I’m just glad I got my Veprs at sane prices. But now their lifespans are greatly diminished. But feel free to enjoy the excuses and boot licking.

Without cheap ak ammo I don’t think I would want a 7.62 or 5.45 once we make sure that is still coming in I will keep looking for an ak.
