Jurassic World – What Caliber For Dinosaurs?

A trailer for the new movie set to be released June 12 2015:

The original Jurassic Park (1993), which is now 21 years old (RIP to young Mike apparently) was one of my favorite movies of all time.  I didn’t really want to think about how old I am this late on a Tuesday, but that aside this movie looks promising.  It doesn’t look like there will be anything ground breaking in the story line judging by the trailer… but I’m sure there will be some suspenseful parts and amazing CGI.   Holy at when that Meglodon (is that the name of that thing?) eats the great white.

Shout out to hot mom Judy Greer who is at the start of the trailer.  This summer I ate dinner no more than 10 ft away from her in Whistler (British Columbia).  *subtle lifestyle flex*   So yea you could say things are getting pretty serious with us.  I even low key tweeted at her the day after.  Sure I didn’t get a reply, but I figured she didn’t want to make a spectacle.

Jurassic-WorldMy dad collects pinball machines, and is a genius at fixing them.  He picked up the original Jurassic Park one a while back which is awesome. I played that so much, a couple summers ago when I went home for a bit.  Probably one of the best pinball machines out there in my opinion.

Thoughts?

Meh, i’ll pass. The story looks predictably ruhtarded: Hey lets open up Jurrasic Park (again), this time with moar DNA mixing because the govt wants dino-warriors for the GWOT! Oh the noes, something went wong!!

I would say it depends on what you’re shooting at. Anything Velociraptor size, probably a .308 or .30-06. Anything Tyrannosaurus/Allosaurus size .50 BMG min. For anything Apatosaurus size I’d say a Carl Gustav 84 mm Recoilless Rifle with a HESH warhead would be about right.

Lose the .30 cals and rebarrel a Noreen Bad News for .510 Whisper.

I don’t know bout that for velociraptor. According to the Wikipedia page on Jurassic Park, the Velociraptors stand about 2 meters (6.5 feet) tall and weight 200-300 lbs. That puts them in the range of a large African Leopard to a medium size African Lion, and definitely in the category of Dangerous Game.

As such, rule of thumb is nothing smaller than a .375 H&H and then maybe going up to a .458 Lott, loaded with soft points for good measure.

If I was going to step down to a lower caliber, I’d go with a Benelli R1 or Browning BAR Mk II Safari in .338 Win Mag (although the hinged floor plate on the Browning slows down reloads).

After that, maybe an AR10 in .325 WSM (Accuracy Systems makes ’em), or 300 SAUM (again Accuracy Systems or a used DPMS).

Whatever caliber I chose, red dot with iron sight backup.

The only thing that would put me in a .308 win for Dangerous Game was if it was select fire.

Nice analysis for sure, but I wouldn’t forget to bring a back up gun. I recommend the Deagle brand or maybe snub nose .500 S&W. Also I would strap on a Mad Max double barrel in 10 gauge just for good measure. And don’t forget to bring friends.

Andy Dwyer from parks and recs has really had his career take off. Probably all that MouseRat money. Seems like a cool dude, but in my brain he’s a goofy guy named Andy… I get confused whe. He plays all serious and stuff.

Anyone recognize that rifle at 2:01? I am curious what they will hunt dinosaurs with… other than the trained velociraptors. The only gun I remember from the first one were SPAZ-12.

I wish I could get one of those trained raptors, it would certainly be entertaining to go to the dog park.

Looks like a lever gun to me, probably in 45-70.

I guess if it works on Bison…

It looks like a Marlin XLR series – the magazine tube is full length so I’d have thought the 1895SBL but the batter looks too long and the lever looks standard, not big-loop.

On second look I think it’s a 30/30 XLR from Marlin with a little work done to it to make it ‘movie ready’ .. -Pk

So what do you do for a living? “I ride motorcycles while hunting with my trained raptors to hunt super-smart genetically modified killer dino’s.”

Oh.

Yo my guess is that the Great White eating machine is a Mosasaur. Or it’s CGI made up bullshit. Anyway, it looks cool.

I would recommend a…… Just saw the megalodon/mega shark thing….. Now I don’t think my suggestion of a Vector in .500 S&W would work on that.

So…… did anyone else see that first crowd scene and think, “Look! Dino lunch!”
And when the little round balls showed up…though…..”Hamster ball!”
Imagine the apatosaurus whacking one with their tail…… “Weeeeeeee!”

Or the fun a raptor could have bouncing one around like a cat chasing an occupied hamster ball…….

GMO Dino: for those days when being a velociraptor just isn’t scary enough.

Technically all things genetic are modified objects though. Right? I mean, it didn’t remain the same all these beelyons of years so it’s modified. Whether it did so itself or whatever is irrelevant. LOL
